Absolutely love these boots, comfortable straight out of the box with zero break-in.
I got the price wrong, this version is $170 USD. The crazy horse version is $180, which is just a more premium hide. Similar to Red Wing's copper rough and tough hide if you're familiar, it's a nubuck with a really waxy hand feel.
Keep your eyes peeled, I've got some more vids incoming in the next few days: Clinch, Mister Freedom, Benzein, Red Wing, and some other makers.
Pictures here: imgur.com/a/Gr...
Some tidbits:
-Fits true to size: last is very roomy however so if you prefer a snugger fit you might be able to go down a half size, so long as you're D/E width. I'd recommend asking the fine folks at Jim Green if you have any sizing questions/concerns.
-Toe and heel are reinforced, boot is otherwise unlined so it's relatively lightweight.

Caught a mistake: this makeup is actually $170. Got some new content coming soon, so keep your eyes peeled. I'll be reviewing two very exciting engineer boots, among other things.

Thanks for the kind words Harker, much appreciated. Our African Ranger is a great boot, worst part of my day is taking my pair off.

Will you be making a Ranger that is less wide? I returned a pair because my toes looked like they were flattened by a steamroller.

@@alainorozco8032 Thanks for the feedback, there currently no plans for this. The toe box is wide to assist for those longer days on the feet. When one looks down on the boots they do look very wide but when wearing and from a side angle it is hard to pick up, especially once broken in and many miles done in them. Drop us a DM or email if you would like further pictures or have more questions.

I'm from South Africa and I'm very happy to see Jim Green on a more global market. They are well-known in South Africa and have a good reputation. I've had a few pairs of Jim Green boots and they are very tough! Got me a pair of these African Rangers recently and they are very nice. Easier break in than what my Jim Green Razorbacks were.

Thanks for posting this video! I got mine a few weeks ago and I think I'd have to agree with you on all fronts. There's a lot of cool features that show how much actual thought went into designing this shoe. I really appreciate how the heel stiffener is on the outside of the leather upper and covered with another piece of leather. That kind of eliminates the need for a heel counter, simplifies production, and really keeps the inside pretty sleek. At first I felt that from my eye view down they looked clowny but I think it's a mix of the cap toe coupled with the stictchdown construction. It adds this halo outline that really only the wearer can see. There isn't much buzz about this excellent boot. I've been checking RU-vid every so often to see if anyone has reviewed em and it's been crickets. Hope these gain traction. I have the same color too!

The insoles in mine popped right out. They ARE structured but not very much padding for the ball of feet. VERY comfortable all-arounders. Sizing spot on (unless you've been buying chinese). Probably the most comfortable boot I've owned (I have wide ball/toe,normal to thin heel). Good job Jim Green Boots!

I just got a pair of these yesterday. I do a lot of backpacking and have transitioned to anatomically shaped trail shoes over the years, so the funny width/shape doesn't bother me. Though the boot width plus the perceived additional width because of the welt do make it look very wide when looking down. Pretty comfy so far. Sizing was spot on for me. I did replace the insole with a more cusioned and supportive one. I got the fudge crazy horse color, kind of wishing I had the brown, but I think the crazy horse will be more durable in the long run and will darken with age. I will probably take a look at the vellies next. I remember visiting Kenya for school 25 years ago and all of our guides had these tan chuckas made by BATA. They referred to them as "Safari boots". The vellies remind me of those, so I'm going to grab a pair. We will see how these hold up.
@RoyalFizzbin

Jim Green themselves posted a video of a cleaning procedure for the crazy horse that involves beeswax. The beeswax ends up darkening the boot a bit, leaving a really nice looking finish.

One week expirience with AR and I can say these are the most versetile shoes I've ever had.Comfortable from day one,the wide toe box is a heaven for my feet.Well taught,away from stylish but good looking,well pairing with jeans,chinos and shorts.Here in EU could find only the brown leather version fitting my size,they cost me 200 euro(20euro shipping incl.) from a german site based in Dusseldorf.Got some complains tho-this brown leather seems great but away from the announced 2,2mm thickness.It atually varies from 1,6 to 2,0mm.The tongue is 1mm(its ok,folds great) .Here and there stitches are uneven,not straight and not parallel where there is double stitching.Yet I don't find anithing that will compromise the performance.Considering purchase a pair of the crasy horse AR when its available to rotate between.

I wear nothing but quality leather boots, and for the price I was quite surprised how nice these African Rangers are. Great quality for the price. It took at least two weeks of daily wear to break mine in. When these wear out I’ll probably just buy a new pair instead of resole because they are so affordable

that's exactly why i bought them. people are beginning to value quality again because we're all sick of mass produced unethical chinese fast fashion garbage that gets trashed after a few months. As a result i think the timelessness of resolable, good year welted, heritage boots are returning to the popularity they deserve... For $170 for a pair of sturdy high quality leather heritage boots with a really classy casual look? Yeah that's a STEAL for me. Especially cause they look more way more comfortable than the stiff $300 red wings

I've had these for a few months and would have to disagree that they have arch support. The support is minimal at best. Also, the leather insert and attached foam is less than 1/8 of an inch thick. I really wish they would have spent more time perfecting the insole to offset the rock hard fiberboard midsole. However, they did a very nice job of constructing the leather uppers.

I got a pre-order pair of the Rangers and also a pair of the Outbacks. I really like these boots for what they are... a value-oriented midrange boot. I guess it's just a symptom of growing popularity but the recent ~25% price hike without any accompanying quality improvement (leather midsole please?) makes them less appealing for a re-buy. Plenty of companies make a better $225 boot.
@harkerleatherworks
@harkerleatherworks 2 года назад
They’re actually using higher grade leather these days, the hide on this is way nicer than my old Razorbacks. Apparently the price hike is due to a couple things. Wage increases, higher shipping costs, and more expensive raw materials. Word is that those initial low prices were more of an early bird special. A leather midsole would be awesome. I know with American brands you don’t start seeing leather midsoles until the mid-high $300 range.

Interesting to hear how comfortable they are. My Jim Green Stockman boots are absolutely the most UNcomfortable things I have ever put on my feet. Over a year old and they are still painfull. The soles have zero flex so it is like wearing the shoebox instead of the boots. I'm ready to cut bait and throw them out. I'm very disappointed.

Ditch the insoles that came with them and put in a set of the Timberland Pro Anti-Fatigue. The improvement is day and night, for me they were unwearable without them. But I was used to sneakers.

Are they good as a boot for light construction work? Trim carpentry and such? Is the tow stiff enough for that purpose? Can you elaborate on that point? Thank you
@JimGreenFootwearOfficial
@JimGreenFootwearOfficial 2 года назад
They would be if you after a light and nimble boot compared to our Razorback. The toe is a genuine toe cap (2 layers of 2.2mm full grain leather) and it also has a thermoplastic toe puff so plenty material around the toe area. The softer wedge sole then offers comfort for those longer days on flat areas.

not my experience at all. mine required break-in that is not terrible but they do take some break-in! the boots are very hard underfoot despite using gel insoles. i feel the ripples like they are rocks. my ARs are currently being resoled with vibram comfort soles because after wearing them a month it was either a resole or selling the boots on ebay, and i do like them except for the soles

Depends on your preferences, if you want to preserve the color then I’d recommend Bick 4. If you don’t mind darkening then something like Blackrock Leather n Rich or Obenauf’s heavy duty LP. Those heavier treatments will also give the leather a degree of water resistance as well. Personally I used Obenauf’s, it’s got a nice scent and gives the leather a nice glow when you buff it.

I have high arches and suffer from plantar fasciitis. I needed just a bit more support.The stock insole is high quality and probably fine for most (looks like the leather they line other boots with and a backing with a plastic orthotic). I have wide feet and these boots fit nicely but did not want insoles that took up too much room. The stock insole is approx. 2.3 mm in the forefoot. Superfeet Blue had s a medium arch and for forefoot is only 3mm. The plastic orthotic is similar to the one on the Jim Green insole. Not sure if this helps anyone, but it gave me the additional support I needed for my arch and did not change the fit. It would be really cool if they had the Jim Green insole available in different arch heights for an additional cost. I liked the material leather for the top cover which would probably last long.

@harkerleatherworks
@harkerleatherworks 2 года назад
These will have a degree of water resistance, but not much since these are unlined. I wouldn't recommend wearing these in any wet conditions though, wedge soles can be prone to slipping. Because of how stitchdown and welted construction boots are made, they are almost never going to be waterproof. Jim Green does offer some cemented sole boots that *are* waterproofed, I believe it's their monster line. Those boots have a waterproof lining inside the upper as well.
