Niccolo Machiavelli MJ made iso ball a major thing and that has continued through to today, other players did it previously but he was the guy that cemented it into basketball culture The “who’s team is this” rhetoric that exists pretty much comes from MJ being so dominant Teams where much more unselfish with structured play and defined positions before MJ, MJ was the main ball handler and scorer to such a degree that it changed basketball and the way a lot of players since have played... The league changed because of Magic’s Showtime as a 6’9” *Point Guard* , it changed because of Jordan’s meshing of Skill and Pure Athleticism, and Steph Curry’s reliance on the 3( He takes more 3’s a game, than any WHOLE TEAM Larry Bird was on) That’s what makes a transformative player, which is a different metric than just great. Magic Johnson even said during his HOF speech that Larry Bird brought out the best in him. He went on to say that Larry was the best player he EVER played against. The NBA was losing money before Magic and Bird came into the league. Those two players literally saved the NBA and made it possible for the huge network deals that followed that helped to pay Jim Jackson's salary. If that's not trans-formative, I don't know what is.

Soji SideQuest go learn the meaning of “transformational or transformative and apply it in the context Jim Jackson said it and you’ll end up agreeing with him. Magic, 6’9 point guard transformed the game with showtime basketball. MJ transformed the game with a combination of the most elite skills plus the most elite athleticism in one human body. Steph Curry transformed the game with 3 point shooting range, spreading the court and increasing the value of the threat of 3pt shot. Larry Bird, one of the greatest of all times and one of the best shooters ever was great, don’t get it wrong, but the game didn’t transform or change because he did anything new nor did players/team start trying to play his style or like him. Same thing with Kobe, Shaq, Duncan, D Wade etc, all dominant players and some of the greatest players but they didn’t transform the game. Now to personality, MJ has a transformational personality. Jim Jackson is right when he says there’s a different energy when MJ would walk into a room because we’ve heard other players, even great players, all stars, say the same thing. Some described it as an aura of reverence and sudden silence when they saw MJ walk in. Magic was different, he transformed a room with his laughter and infectious smile, brought everyone along and made it a happy place. Larry did his thing too but not transformational in that sense.
@bbaker2474
@bbaker2474 5 лет назад
Magic and Larry transformed the NBA together... If any of you understood what was going on with the NBA prior to their arrival you wouldn't be having this conversation. In fact other than Wilt literally transforming the NBA in terms of rule changes, a person with common sense would argue no other person(s) made more of a changed to a sport than both Larry and Magic. Playoff games were taped and replayed, teams were losing lots of money, players only cared about money. There was huge disconnect between the fans and the players. Both Larry and Magic only cared about winning. That's how they changed the game. Magic isn't Magic unless there is a Larry there to push him...just ask Magic!
@joeterzio7175
@joeterzio7175 5 лет назад
@@bbaker2474 You're so right. I was a Sixers fan during the era and believe me when I say that I hated the Celtics and Larry Bird in particular. But as you mentioned, the NBA was a dying league in 1979. Magic AND Larry changed that. One couldn't have done it without the other. And both players had transformational skills, too. You had a 6'9" PG who could pass, rebound and score while Larry was a prototype for the modern stretch-4... a forward who could rebound, shoot from outside, and he could pass almost as well as Magic could. Both players also had the same killer instinct that Michael had and that every legend has to have.

And don’t forget that the western conference was not that good in the 80’s bro so that was more easy for him to go in the finals and win because he have not to play all time team like the 76 sixers of dr.j and Moses, The bad boys pistons, bulls team on the rise with MJ, Cleveland with price and daughtery or the hawks of Dominique so that was more easy to win in the finals because they didn’t have to play against this kind of team before. Bird led the Celtics to the biggest turn around in nba history his rookie year. If that isnt transformational im not sure what is. Jim Jackson keeps saying his definition of transformational might be different to others but id say that stat alone makes what he is saying objectively wrong. It's crazy how older players get more and more slept on...

I think his definition of the word is skewed. It sounds more like hes talking about the sheer star power that comes with the Lebron or Jordan branding alone. Larry was a legend and is way up there with anyone whos played the game but you can go to small town in India for example and they know who Mike and Lebron are and maybe Kobe.

Larry Bird was a transformational player because he showed that you do not need a lot of athleticism to still dominate the game and have other professional players fear and respect you. Bird, by his own admission and the opinion of other players and analysts, was slow, not that strong and could barely jump. Instead, he developed a very precise shot from the perimeter, always looked for the open teammate, was creative near the basket, and had unbreakable confidence. He also played mind games when he would literally tell people guarding him what he was going to do and then he'd do it successfully anyway. Keep in mind that the League was harder to play in back then because they allowed more contact and most players never developed an outside shot, like all teams train and encourage them to do now. The only way Jim Jackson might be "right" is if he misused the word tranformational, and really meant something else like charismatic instead.
