What if there was one thing you could practice that would improve all of your playing? Scales? Rhythm? Harmony? What would it be? Here is a different take on using the mental model of meditation to get better at music.
Drummer Jim Johnston debuts his new Podcast series "Gym/Jim For The Mind" with JazzYYC. An avid proponent of meditation and finding concepts to clear your mind during the creative process, Jim discusses some of the everyday challenges and pitfalls to finding ways to focus through the mental model of meditation. A humourous and uplifting look at this ancient practice with a meditation practice utilizing counting for musicians included.
Jim Johnston is one of Alberta’s busiest musicians. His education from Humber College’s performance program, studying with some of the world’s premier jazz musicians at the Banff Center and privately with drummers of all genres across North America allows him the opportunity to relish in a diverse performance life. Jim can be spotted perming regularly with the likes of the Calgary Jazz Orchestra, Theater Calgary, The Calgary Stampede Grandstand Show, Tim Tamashiro, Revv52, and Joanna Borromeo in addition to keeping a busy teaching schedule as well as operating his own music school/cafe Cornerstone Music Cafe. This gives Jim the opportunity to wear many hats including mentor, teacher, entrepreneur, father, husband, and performer. All with the goal of nurturing a creative, prosperous cultural environment for both youth and professional musicians in Calgary.
