I once went to a college football game at Colorado State vs BYU in the early 80s. Jim McMahon was the starter, got injured and Steve Young was his backup. They destroyed CSU!

I looked at BYU list of QBs and was a little taken aback. Somehow I didn’t realize they’ve had so damn many good ones. I mean damn you could put that list up against Michigan , Alabama or Miami as far as the QB position.

He's behind a couple others... ----------------------------------------------- Jim Plunkett !!!! Won two Super Bowls as a starter (2-0) Wasn't really expected to even make the team when he joined the Raiders. He had spent many years in New England and then San Francisco (where he was labeled a NFL bust) The guy had an amazing leadership aura that spread to the entire team. Two Super Bowl wins... 27-10 over the red hot Eagles in 1980-81... Then a Super Blowout over the Washington Redskins who just won a SB the previous year. No respect at all. Underrated isn't strong enough of a word. ---------------------------------------- * Eli Manning* (the other guy there in the interview) Beat Tom Brady ... TWICE! (2-0 in Super Bowls) Brady was enjoying an undefeated season and was already 3-0 in Super Bowl appearances prior to that game. I still hear and see Giants fans taking a huge dump on Eli in spite of those two epic SB wins. So like Plunkett... he won the games but couldn't win over the masses. -------------------------------------------- * Earl Morrall* (QB'd for 12 seasons before...) ...eventually taking over for aging and hurting Johnny Unitas and winning a Super Bowl (16-13) over Dallas and the Doomsday Defense (when they were young). He had played three years with the Giants prior, 7 years with the lions, and 2 with the Steelers and one with the 49ers. One of those years was split with the Steelers and Lions which he played 9 games for the latter). You would think his career would be over after 12 years. McMahon by comparison, spent a seven (7) years with the Bears before becoming a traveling backup journeyman. Played 15 years total... Yet winning just that one Super Bowl in 1985 with the aid of a terrific defense and power running game. Game never really fell onto Jim's shoulders. Hell, Steve Fuller (who played five games that year and maybe a playoff game) could have easily done the same or better against the Pats. Getting back to Earl Morrall, after his 3rd year with the Colts (where he won the Super Bowl) he joined the Miami Dolphins where he'd spent the next 6 years. Won two Super Bowls rings and was a huge factor in getting Miami to the 1972 game unbeaten after Griese was injured for the entire season. While Bob came back for the final two playoff games, Earl had a phenomenal year. Career record: 63-36-3 (and 3 Super Bowl rings out of 4 appearances - lost to the Jets in SB III). He was 44-4-1 (after joining the Colts during what would be his 13th career season!). Played 21 years. --------------------------------------------- * Nick Foles* (ultimate journeyman) Played only 11 seasons and going 29-29 (not including postseason). Won a Super Bowl over heavily favored New England. Basically, beat the same team; New England Patriots just as the Bears had done... Although his Eagles, didn't have the same top tier level running game the Bears had... Nor, the amazing defense the '85 Bears had. Foles had games where he tossed 7 touchdowns... ( I know he had at least one... thought he had a second) So he was a decent QB (leader) and a decent (but inconsistent) passer. Never spent longer than 3 years with the same team. Eagles had him for 3, then he went around to a couple others before returning to the Eagles to win a SB and play one more year with them). Spent last 4 years with 3 different teams. Had some great games just about every year. Except for that 0-4 season he played with Jax. ------------------------------------------------- Those that are either equal to Jim or slightly better: Without getting into too much Detail, here are some more QB's that won a SB and in spite of some fame they were underrated afterwards. * Ben Rothlisberger* (Steelers) Apparently, two Super Bowl wins just wasn't enough in some people's eyes to give him merit. 2-1 career in SB's and damn near come from behind win in the last (had he won that and got MVP... who knows?). Wide receivers on his team raked in the MVP's (Ward and Holmes). While not hating on those choices (Ben did suck in the 21-10 win ---at least stat wise. From a QB perspective, he was able to motivate the team to do great things. Yet still snubbed even today. * Mark Rypien* (Redskins) Won the 1991 Super Bowl vs Buffalo, 37-24 In spite of getting the SB MVP... still today he's often forgotten and ignored much the same way Jim Plunkett is. Jim won two Super Bowls (I think he also won SB MVP over the Eagles... can't remember). But still Mark's single win and MVP wasn't enough to make "non-Redskin fans" put him on a list of great SB QB's. * Russell Wilson (Seattle) If it weren't for a goal line interception when the team should have RUN the ball.... A 2-0 (in the SB) record would given Russ some much needed respect. Instead, he's just "participant" in a great defensive SB (vs Denver) where it very much even resembled what the Bears did to New England in 1985. In fact, they even got a safety just like the Bears (albeit was the first score whereas the Bears got their last) Seattle was just a field goal less than what McMahon and Chicago did. * Drew Brees (Saints) With all the odd things that happened in his SB appearance, he was overshadowed credit-wise by them. The onside kick... the INT return... all contributed to Brees lack of respect from around the league. (always a good gauge to measure by when you see comments from "neutral fans") * Brad Johnson* (Tampa Bay's win over the Raiders) wasn't given as much credit because he lived in the shadow of his team's defense (similar to McMahon situation). * Trent Dilfer* (Ravens) Helped beat the Giants 34-7 and never got one ounce of respect due to the Raven's defense and strong running game. I put him even with Jim because Jim had the same exact thing going on in 1985 as Dilfer did in his SB win.

I will always treasure Peyton and Eli and the whole Manning Clan. Peyton and Eli have a unique perspective on football and football history. They are as much football historians as they are Hall of Famers, even if Eli is not eligible yet. They have ate, drank, and slept football their whole lives. I grew up watching their father play at Ole Miss. I have never seen anyone else play the game like Archie Manning did.

@@muffs55mercury61 today's NFL and NCAA offenses are geared for running quarterbacks that use continuation. They keep the play going running and then running or passing. Archie was the first and still in my opinion, the best dual threat quarterback and very high football IQ.
