Right?!? That's what I thought, too. I was so concerned, that we are slowly but surely turning into witless zombies in front of our screens - but maybe, he's right... At least 50 % of us will be spared turning into witless zombies in front of their screens (the rest is following Fox News and some obscure channels featuring wild conspiracy theories about blood drinking celebrities and lizard people and whatnot)...

My immediate thought when Jimmy described good comedians as those who can “change the thermostat of the mood” (8:48) was of Conan’s visit to Haiti where he did exactly that moments into a conversation w a group of people there still suffering after the latest destructive earthquake several years ago. I was already a fan of his comedy; it was then I became a lifelong admirer of his humanity as well. If you see this, Conan, thank you for that, and keep up the good work.

But I think he misses a point that we didn’t used to spend hours at a time watching short nonsense, but now there are young people doing that on TikTok, and they might not want to focus on longer stuff as they age.

So much love from Southern Finland! ❤ I'm bilingual and lived in the UK, but assimilated North American influences very early, so I've grown up on both Python/Fast Show/Blackadder/panel concepts etc. as well as late night and US stand up classics. 14:17 Another great observation by Jimmy Carr regarding great comedy (and I guess life in general too) here is when he talks about what the American painter and visual artist Chuck Close used to say: "Inspiration is for amateurs, the rest of us go to work." He follows this up with saying that inspiration is the reward you get for turning up for work(i.e. your passion or work or hobby) everyday. I think this is a great insight!

As would I. I’d love to see Conan talk to Greg about TM. Especially since I truly believe Conan would make an AMAZING Taskmaster if they ever decided to try a US version again. In fact I think they should just go all in and not only have Conan as Taskmaster but Andy Richter (or even better Jordan Schlansky) replace Alex. I think that and keeping the British format instead of the condensed one they used here last time would be more than enough juice to make it very successful here.

The reason comedy is so hard to pin down as a science is: the magic of comedy happens in a single instant and it's very unconscious. Whereas you can stare at a painting or replay a song and "get" why it's good, it's very hard to revisit the moment where you laughed at a punchline and re-experience it. So you are left analyzing structure, but, structure is not art, it is the form of art. Still, I agree that somebody who is actually funny and a great writer should make a book about it. Because the books I've seen haven't had great advice.

I really liked the conversation around the language of comedy. You could tell that Conan and Jimmy are in disagreement currently, but Conan rightfully changed the subject for time. They need to have this conversation again away from camera for a much longer time. I think it would be legendary. Add in feedback from other geniuses in the industry, and I think Jimmy would be proved correct. These two could be very powerful together. Two of the smartest people in the game and on their sides of the Atlantic. It would be a shame if they didn't make more comedy together.

*THIS* is what elevates Jimmy over so many other belligerent comics. Subjective enjoyment of his comedy aside, this is not an excuse for malice like so many others who just want to hurt people. In a way, he’s less a comedian & more a psychologist who figured out how to get paid more

Conan is much better in this setting, where proper conversations can be had, versus the contrived world of light entertainment with a studio audience.

You know, It's funny how most of the content that I watch nowdays is either 10 second long IG/TikTok reels or 2+ hour long video essays

I'm a kid of the '70s and '80s who grew up watching funny people in front of brick walls and I also never knew how to get into that business. I was a misfit who had to adapt to be the humorist like y'all said, but never pursued the idea that I could purposefully make others laugh, it was always a defense/adaptation mechanism.

I agree that the internet has improved everyone's english. It's always been the "universal language" but that's more true now than ever. Even regional accents are starting to blend together, especially with younger people.

In the forgotten TV SF made in the 1990s, B5, one of the characters calls English "The Earth Language of Commerce." It was already true then, ad LOT more now.

Eddie Izzard trying to take stand up comedy into France and Germany is a fascinating thing, and the French comedy scene in general is really interesting. There's even a British comic who live in France who does bilingual shows that are phenomenal. The art form really does have so much room to stretch.

Wow Conan once again, you impress me with your knowledge in this particular case, of the War/Post War influence of Canadian and US Military bringing Music in 45 format to their deployments in the UK and trading records that is proper history m8

What Jimmy said about late night shows being about NOT having a conversation and just keeping things going is exactly why I hate late night shows... I've always disliked them exactly for that reason and massively prefer this sort of format where an actual discussion can happen.

Conan definitely needs more friends from UK: Greg Davies, Noel Fielding, Bob Mortimer, Graham Norton, Stephen Fry, Hugh Laurie, David Mitchell...

I would love to see an escalating back-and-forth banter of being "more correct" than each other with him and David Mitchell, like Conan did with the occasional "I never make a mistake" viewer corrections back in the day.

Conan, the English panel shows are the best in the world... I hope you openly embrace them more often... 8 out of 10 cats, wilty, qi, big fat quiz of everything...all of it is superior to what America is offering.
