Jimmy Greaves, Greavsie [Best Goals] 

I had the privilege to meet Jimmy a few years ago, I told him he was my all-time football idol. He replied, well I certainly was idle. It speaks volumes about his humour and humility.

Jimmy Greaves would be in my all time British X1, he was a goal machine of the highest caliber. The fact that he did not make the 1966 World Cup winning X1 was criminal but it was his goals in the matches up to the 66 final that got England there. ALL those players in that 1966 squad should have received a knighthood, not just Geoff Hurst and Bobby Charlton

For me its striking how modern a player he still looks. He still could easily catch up in todays football..

When you see the state of the pitches it makes you realise how incredible Jimmy was. Up there with Best & Messi.

I used to be an Albion fan in the days when I lived in England. I saw Jimmy Greaves play in a game at the Hawthorns which West Brom won 4-3. Jimmy Greaves scored the most intelligent penalty I've ever seen in a game of football. He just gave the ball a nudge and it slowly rolled across the line - with goalkeeper John Osborne hurtling in the wrong direction. I wonder if anyone who ever saw Jimmy play ever saw him take similar, spectacular penalties. I personally think Jimmy was better than George Best. One of the all-time greats of English football - deceptively fast, he could turn on a sixpence. I wish him well if he's still going and say thanks for the memories of his pure, exciting talent.

I wished he wore the red of lfc what a player he was my idol the best I ever saw they rave about messi jimmy would leaving him standing, and the muddy pitches he played on imagine him playing on the lawns they have today, he would be worth a billion, happy birthday mr greaves, you are catching me up inwa.

Silky skills and deft touches along with good finishing.. Great player his quote which stuck in my head as a boy was "you don't have to hit the ball hard to score a goal"

I had the pleasure and privilege of seeing him regularly in the mid to late 60s and he was deadly in front of goal. I met him in 2013 and he told me "I missed more chances than I scored" Such was the humility of the great man.

As someone who only knew him as a big fat pundit, by god he was the best footballer we ever produced! He’s like a modern player, so composed and clinical

I supported Spurs because of Jimmy. I saw his last match at WHL as a Spurs player and his next match at WHL as a West Ham player. Of course he scored and everyone in the crowd cheered. It was a classic Greaves goal where he simply 'directed' the ball into the net.

Like watching Steve Davis squeeze the black into the top left pocket when it's near the top cushion and the cue ball's down in balk .... perfect placement and control.

Just came here on hearing that he was ill and not knowing much about him. He can score/shoot off either foot; volley, half-volley or shoot off ground; header; dribble; free kick etc etc - looks like he can do everything and knows where the goal and defenders are with uncanny awareness. Glad that I came here and best of luck to Greavsie with his illness. Best wishes.

Rangers fan here. I was too young to appreciate Jimmy as a striker, and what a special player he was, but more importantly, he seemed a genuinely humble and self-effacing character. RIP, Jimmy.

I'm a 65 year old leeds fan my dad used to take me to games and I had to choose which to go to because he couldn't always afford it I said tottenham first so I could see jimmy Greaves never bettered and never will

Best pure “ finisher” that I have ever seen.

On. 29th September 1962 I went to White Hart Lane as a 14 year old and saw Jimmy score 4 goals against Notts Forest in a 9-2 drubbing .He was my hero thereafter and ever since both as a great, great player and also a wonderful , if flawed a little bit , human being. Xx

Greavsie was a true genius and a top bloke. The appalling conditions he often played in only serve to illustrate his tremendous ability. I have a brown leather football signed by Jimmy which I'll always treasure.

I believe that Gary Lineker did some verbal jousting with Greaves who replied "Well Gary none of MY many England goals came against San Marino, Cameroon etc" ...Lineker then wisely kept quiet. Greaves is the best post war England striker.

The way Greaves stutter steps before shooting reminds me of how Sonny does that alot. Also his way of placing the ball as a finish seems Son's style more than Kane these days.

Arsenal fan here, I loved Jimmy Greaves, had to make the list of all time greatest English players, but not considered good enough by Ramsey back in 1966.

I am an Arsenal fan but just love and respect Jimmy Greaves. Funny how many one-on-one he had with the goalies and he never once went down to claim a false penalty....unlike today’s cheating, cowardly forwards.
