Life long fan of the Zep. When a band puts out a album maybe you get 3 or 4 good songs and the rest of the album is a number of fair songs. In my opinion the one thing that really impressed me about Led Zepplin was that every song on every album rocked, rare indeed.

Saw the P & P show in 1998 at Great Woods (MA), one of the best concerts I've ever seen, and the only time I've seen them in person (Zep only played CT in 1969 & 1970, when I was only 14, 15 years old). Jimmy was absolutely on fire that night (everybody knew it) and Robert hitting the high notes. Loudest ovations I've ever heard for that size venue in 50+ years of concert-going. 🎸🎤

Charles, i think i was referring more to the sound quality of the video not the actual performance itself. I had some breaks on the feed. I think perfect was the wrong word for my original post. I think Rick Beato says that "perfection is the greatest enemy of goodness" and i tend to agree. I love the authentic live performances.

@@charlesbowers1749 Lead singer Chris Robinson doesn't quite reach the highest notes on the outro, but as you say, perfection isn't attainable - or perhaps not even desirable - in a live setting, and since LZ never played In the light live this is pretty much as good as it gets. For personal reasons this happens to be the LZ song closest to my heart, and to actually hear it done live is truly heart warming. Didn't even know this existed until today.

I've always been of the opinion (perhaps a minority one but an opinion none the less) that many of Zep's tunes, like this one, required more musicians than they brought to the stage when they were active - and because of that, many of their tunes took on a completely different live personality, and (IMHO) not often a good one. Therefore it's refreshing to hear a Zep tune with keyboards played live that actually has a discernable bass line as well (not to mention the multiple guitar parts).
@michaeliredale7652

I agree. JP Jones is a great multi-instrumentalist, but he couldn't do it all at the same time.
@kevinkeyes6625

I love housefull all those layered guitar sound. I'm sort of a guitarist myself and I think in the live recordings I hear page compromising and playing parts of different guitar parts on a single thread. It's like he was trying to capture the best of all the parts.
@howabouthetruth2157
@howabouthetruth2157 5 лет назад
Kevin Keyes..........You are correct. I saw the original Led Zeppelin 3 times throughout the 70's and then Page & Plant during their "Unledded" tour in the early mid 90's in Orlando Florida. Page always did infuse "parts of the various guitar parts" during their live performances, that were done as overdubs in the studio. At times, he really pulled it off, and other times, it sounded a little thin. Either way, it's a damned hard thing to do live, as Zep tunes are not that easy to perform AND make it sound right anyway. I know, because I'm a "retired" highly seasoned guitarist/blues harp/singer/performer/perfectionist, and covered most of the Zep catalog over a period of decades. Try SINGING it and playing those guitar parts at the same time on stage. I sure as hell did it.......and I did it a lot. I don't think I ever witnessed ANY other person pull off Plant's voice and Page's guitar playing at the same time, on stage, like I did. They were the masters for sure. I truly feel sorry for the younger generations being raised on rap & hip hop. They are totally CLUELESS......when it comes to REAL MUSIC.

I agree 1000% ! Sounds so good to hear all the guitars parts live , and just sounds massive in comparison to Zep playing live with 3 pieces.

@collinschwartzesq I don't see it anywhere and find it tough to believe because melodically, it does not seem different. He did not go for a lower note alternative. Plant versus Robinson is tough to choose. Plant has a more melodic expressive smooth voice whereas Robinson has a more gritty ballsy sound. I will short circuit if I keep thinking of it. So apple and orange is my final answer also depends what songs they are doing.

Live performances[edit] "In the Light" was never played live at Led Zeppelin concerts.[1] According to Jones, Robert Plant was emphatic about wanting to play the song onstage, but because Jones could not reproduce the synthesizer sound properly outside of the studio, he vetoed the idea.[citation needed] Legacy[edit] In an interview he gave to rock journalist Cameron Crowe, Plant stated that this song was one of Led Zeppelin's "finest moments".[2] Similarly, Page has stated that this is his personal favourite track on Physical Graffiti.[1] He performed this song on his tour with The Black Crowes in 1999. Although not included on their original album Live at the Greek, a version of "In the Light" can be found as a bonus track on the Japanese version of this album, released in 2000.
