Don't forget to leave a like or dislike on the video! It really does help :) I'm specifically referring to the anime's interpretation of Jiren in this video. And if you enjoyed him, I'm happy :) Im not saying one can't enjoy his character.
Mark thanks because of you and your videos on dragon ball you’ve convinced my Fiance to watch the series and as a result I get to get married with a Dragon Ball themed wedding cake
I get the joke but ocd is making me do this anyway, it was jiren’s current full power. Goku’s personality awakened a new power in jiren equal to mui. The only reason it wasn’t close in the end is cause jiren made goku mad
It's like that for every villain in Dragon ball z super. They always say "This isn't my final form" when their close to defeat just for goku to power up even more. At least in the past he had to earn it or goku either died or was too injured for 20 episodes so someone else had to step in which was gohan or vegeta.
I think goku should have lost and not gained full mui this fight, Jiren should have definitely won. Then at the end he would reconsider: Revive my master? Or accept the fact that he died, knowing that his master would have been proud of him, thus making the decision of reviving all of the universes. Would have made his character soooooo much more likable. Still my favorite character besides broly because of how badass he is tho lol
@@uhhhidk2238 hell no jiren is just strong for no reason just so goku has a obstacle he was a non needed character I would rather have frieza turn on everyone at the end
GodOfCreation 21 but that would have given Jiren character. They definitely tried by giving build up and giving him a backstory, and then having him respect goku at the end. If you’re just gonna spit nonsense then don’t reply
@Moisés Silva so if you had to beat someone or everyone you ever loved would die would you see your enemy as a good person? And if yes when you learn he does not care if the other universes die is he still a good person?
@Johnny Serrano Barraza He works under Frieza, he's by no means desperate for food or shelter and definitely not in "harsh conditions" as many people for some reason (?) seem to make it out to be. The dude's just an asshole, he thinks of the local animals (people?) as a pitstop.
Pound-For-Pound TOP’s issues were a result of Super’s main overarching issue in a nutshell. *Production* - One of the series directors leaving mid way through the arc to work on the movie - Toei not trying to help the quality of the series - Terrible scheduling and planning per episode It was just a mess I liked most of the TOP but man it could’ve been so much better than what it was.
@@MrTorsation476858 Like, I wouldn't even mind Jiren having a shitty backstory as much as I do if they had just revealed what it was from the get-go rather than hyping up the source of his big number and wrapping him in mystery the moment he's revealed. They could let Vegeta and Freeza learn about Jiren's past, and Vegeta could get enraged that his planet got blown up and he isn't a Super Saiyan God of Destruction, or maybe Freeza tries getting a rise out of him by promising to wipe out more villages or pretending to be the one who orphaned Jiren.
@@MrTorsation476858 It's not even that, Jiren was beaten in an un-even fight once and that's it...Even carbon copy shonens do that better, how is that at all entertaining or believable? One loss which resulted in no death causes Jiren to be a sociopath? Why? Did he care about power at that point? He never seems to care about anything though so that's kind of out the window... There are other characters like Jiren but every single one of them is better.
TNM says it best. Jiren has a character arc, but it only lasts two episodes. So he has a character to enjoy, and I do...but that's two episodes. Besides that, he had a plain backstory, desire to get stronger, and we know what wish he wants before the finale. Literally the bare minimum before his real character broke out for the climax.
"What people tell about the character," can go a long way. People should remember the first 1/3 of John Wick was literally just everyone shitting their pants over hearing his name, telling stories about him & bringing up past stories of his legend without him doing much of anything. And it worked wonderfully, as it showed you this guy was going to eventually make everyone's life a living hell.
I was looking for this, cause it definitely worked. I think it's because we aren't given too much info about him at first, but we see his routine after he experiences the death of a loved one. We instantly understand and see that his world has changed and he's grieving. Then as we hear different people panic and talk about him, we see that he's uncovering something in the basement. There's more to this seemingly quiet and reserved guy than we were shown, and we're drawn in and ready to see how he reacts to the people who hurt him. It's not easy an easy introduction to pull off, but it shouldn't be ruled out so quickly.
The big difference is that there is still a ton of show don't tell in John Wick. Simple things like his car, his home, appearance and lifestyle shows you some hints into his character and how strong he is. We know he's an assassin, and considering how expensive his belongings look, he had to have been a pretty good one. Jiren had nothing besides his incredibly bland design. And when people like mafia leaders gush about how dangerous John Wick is, we're given far better dialogue and suspense than someone just saying "Jiren is soooooooooooooo strong".
That’s something I don’t understand about this video. His introduction was fine and just because it wasn’t conventional or by the books doesn’t mean it’s bad. He wasn’t a conventional villain, his premise was a Hero who was participating out of obligation, he doesn’t need to be evil like a conventional villain. I still do admit that they wasted this perfect groundwork for his character.
@@nattylight512 Agreed. The didn't nail the payoffs, but the introduction and setup were perfectly fine. The legend and hype surrounding him doesnt have to come from him or what he's doing whatsoever. I still think the villain was setup to be Goku, but in the end they got cold feet and didn't follow through. They opted to change course, and it threw off the story
@@nattylight512 He doesn't need to be evil, but we know NOTHING about him. Why isn't he interested? Is it because he doesn't care about the fate of his own Universe? Is it because he is overconfident that he will win? And even then, how does he feel about fighting knowing that other universes are going to get erased? If he is supposed to be a hero, he should act like one. He should have been given a bit of Toppo's personality, hating on Goku and even on the gods. Saying something like he hates them. He shouldn't be meditating calmly. He should have been furious. The exposition was weak. We should have seen him do something even before the tournament. Just 1 thing. Like save a cat, eat ramen, take a shower, let a kid get run over by a bus and do nothing to save them, getting lectured by Toppo, cosplay, look at a picture of his dead master and ripping it apart, fail at his duty as a Pride Trooper because "now that the multiverse is in peril, the Gods have shown is that the pursuit of Justice is overrated, only strength matters, I quit the Pride Troopers, see you losers at the tournament. And Toppo, even as a subsitute God of Destruction, you are WEAK!", kill a villain because he doesn't believe in justice, seeing a guy that the other Troopers had trouble catching shit his pants when hearing "Jiren is coming"... Anything would have been better really.
TOEI, Toriyama, or whoever might be the responsible for DBS missed a great opportunity in the tournament of power arc. And the saddest thing about that was that, at the begining of the arc, they stablished a very interest concept: Goku as the antagonist of the arc, or in other words, the villain of the saga. Goku was the responsible for getting every one in danger of being erased of the existance with his proposal of the tournament. Everyone was enjoying their life at their best in home with their families and friends, than suddenly, a crazy man comes up with a competition that is going to kill all of the losers, just because that crazy one likes to fight too much. That was interest and was sad that TOEI just didn't care to explore how this change of dynamic would work with Goku facing the fact that 70 fighters of 7 universes, and their gods, see him as a VILLAIN. They just didn't have the guts to do it, right after stablishing this concept, they changed their minds and set up that the idea of erasing all the universes was already made by Zeno or the father of the angels (forgot his name) and at the end of the arc, told us about the selfish nature of Jiren, to come up with a dislikeble antagonist at the very final moments. That's lazy, sad and coward. Tournament of Power could have been memorable and was just... ok... what was at least much more than the whole previous portion of the show.
Well yes and no, in the manga is stablished that Zeno Sama was planning to destroy most of the 12 Universes because he consider them weak, the Tournament of Power give them a chance to survive. In fact... all of them survived. But again, yes. DBS is just fanservices and powerups mashed togheter, and sadly at least to me, nostalgia is the main reason this series continues.
@@KonEl-BlackZero so in the anime they say Zeno was already planning tô Destroy the weak universes and bla bla bla. Bullshit, as I sair, they Just didnd have the guts to do a not so infatile story.

I once heard this interesting headcanon that, Jiren was actually the one who unknowingly killed his family and master, thanks to his own immense uncontrollable power. That *would* explain why everyone just left him and even MORE explain why in the flashback, he’s completely unharmed when his master was killed and even MORE MORE explain why the monster didn’t just kill Jiren when Jiren walked in on him in his house with his dead family lying on the floor What do you all think about it? 🤔
Does his immense power also make him schitzophrenic? With his (former) friends as well who also fought this “immense power”? I guess it works if you ignore the backstory
Jiren would give a way better moral dilemma to goku if they had a very similar character arc throughout their lives. It would make goku contemplate if he was really the good guy in the situation
Stick Nicks well if anything it would be better if jiren was just goku but with a better sense of good. And goku is kinda a selfish hero he does good things only if they would benefit himself and protect his friends
@@cherrycoyote55 He's not a bad person, its been stated that he's pure hearted, he's just a bit selfish for his goal, just like every successful human being.

@@theopulentone1650 My favourite Toriyama character design trope is the giant gem on the forehead, only Frieza, Cell and a handful of villains have it, but i always liked it.
How to fix Jiren: - Give him a hero treatment - Make the audience wish Jiren to win the ToP - A redemption moment for Jiren - Give Jiren a more mature reason to not Trust in anyone

To me Jiren was a lot more interesting when he was silent. He was ominous, mysterious, and his lack of interest in what was going on around him as well as his emotionless face made him quite scary in a primal way. A monster of power you could say, but the moment he started speaking in earnest, he just devolved into buff power obsessed baddie number 1021 and thus ceased being interesting at all.
Even if it wasn't original that was slightly intimidating. But he should have been more ruthless, sacrificing his teammates so he can be in the spotlight. That kinda thing
@@spoonsrattling No, he should have been a foil to Goku. I still don't hate Jiren. And I see his heel turn at the end as him at his breaking point. For so long he must have thought that nothing could best him, that no one could threaten him. Then Goku comes along and shatters that. It breaks him and in that moment he is fueled by rage that his perception of himself is gone. So he attempts to kill Goku's friends to reaffirm his belief in himself. Everyone has a breaking point, everyone flies into a rage at some point in our lives. Even if that rage is far beyond our normal demeanor. And we do or say things we don't mean.

DBZMacky I think you’re taking terrible as in quality instead of morally. A character with a terrible personality can be interesting when they’re compelling. I mean Frieza himself has a terrible personality morally, but many people adore him. From what this video is saying, they’re saying his personality is terrible because of quality. It’s not done well and instead comes off cheap. I myself do like Jiren but he doesn’t feel like an antagonist to me.
The first time we’re introduced to Kahseral, he’s saying he can’t save the universe because he’s busy saving a cat. He should have had a bigger role. Not overwhelmingly strong, but the smartest and most crafty of the PTs. He should have been the 17 of their universe.

It was a shame to see how poorly they told Jiren's story, because they actually had some elements that would've made him a great character. It was never developed beyond one or two lines, but he was imagined as a mirror to Goku, Jiren IS the Goku of Universe 10 (was it 10?), he's the savior figure, the strongest fighter and the one the other characters look up to. The difference is that Jiren eventually lost everything and became convinced that when he cares for people, those people can be in danger, and that makes him weak, so in order to protect people, he has to become strong by himself. It draws a parallel with Goku, because we can ask ourselves "Would've Goku turned out the same if he didn't have the Dragon Balls to resurrect all the friends he lost along the way?" Krillin died to King Piccolo, Yamcha and Ten Shin Han to the Saiyans, Vegeta to Frieza, at the end of the day Goku would've been just as alone as Jiren if he didn't have Shenron.
I like to think of Jiren as Goku if Goku's never had the dragon balls. What would Goku's personality be like if the death of his friends were permanent?
I never watched it. But it seems that the issue with the arc itself is the need for an Antagonist. To be honest, Jiren having the SAME ideals as Goku would be the most compelling. A character who is fighting tooth and nail for his own Universe, his own family, perhaps one of his underlings could be a son or brother. Dragonball would finally have an Arc that CANT be solved by achieving another power level and continuing the trope. It's what Goku needs: An antagonist that isn't evil. Both Jiren and Goku, with all their might and strength, would have to come to the conclusion that to save some, others must die for them to win, that to be the hero they would also have to be the villain; and that would test their morality. It could even be part of a huge action sequence. Jiren, and Goku, showing off all of their tricks, one upping eachother, until as the battle reaches it's most desperate, with them tearing and depleting each other, they realize they are both fighting for the same thing, and they realize that the true antagonist is a pair of cruel gods who have manipulated them into threatening to destroy another indivdual's universe, simply for enjoyment. They could either have a gotcha and have the gods say that was the whole point and that it was to teach Goku and Jiren that not all battles can be one by reaching a new level of power, or they could just have Jiren and Goku both achieve their pinnacle, and turrn it on the gods in an act 4 where both universes team up against them. But Jiren hating life and being a generic villain with no motivation is, like you indicated, pretty weak. Jiren NEEDED to be a family man. Honestly, he needed to be a character the audience rooted for. A likable character who was funny and charismatic. The best villains usually end up as one of Goku's friends. Goku takes the adage of "keep your friends close, and your enemies closer" and misunderstands it as "forcibly make friends with your enemies".
Wow, now I really wish this is how Jiren was written. You've made an excellent concept in this comment, I hope a future antagonist is like this someday
Jiren would've been 100 times better if he had won the tournament of power but Goku changed Jiren's mind and Goku's influence on Jiren made him use the wish to bring all of the universes back
"Did you enjoy Jiren's character?" Lol what character? Jiren is a failed attempt to have a character with a Hiei-like backstory. Except Yu Yu Hakusho was created by an actually good writer.
But he's literally just Goku from a different universe. Why did goku get strong? "He just is". Same with Jiren except we haven't had 2 TV shows with him
Like someone says he's a walking power level. This man didnt do shit the whole TOP. He shoulda walk over Goku with the amount of stamina he saves (I said save but he spent 0%). U6 was also the most developed Universe along and was behind U7 in terms of elimination
I actually think they set up Goku being the antagonist quite well. Goku and the squad were made out to be the bad guys, and in the end Goku did cause Jiren to change. It was honestly just another one of those "Friendship conquers all, even justice this time."
@@TheKs1387 They do, but it was consecutive shots. The first being during the DBcember countdown, and the second just a few days later in the cell saga epilogue. I also think they mentioned something about straight just not liking Jiren as well.
I can only describe Jiren as "Pro Wrestling Booking - The Character". He's the end game, the main event. But this is only established because other characters we are familiar with are given huge power creep (the rub) only to be immediately jobbed to Jiren.
I still can't believe Toriyama axed the idea of Jiren being the Goku of another universe. It would have been incredibly interesting and fun to see Goku bounce off a character who wants to improve and win as much as he does, and would've injected life into Jiren's otherwise dull character, giving him playful banter with other characters, while still possible to have him learn the "teamwork" lesson by the end by having him be so confident in his strength that he doesn't think anything of his team. He could be cocky and tell them they need not even participate, due to the fact that he's Jiren, he's stronger than a god, what else would his teammates have to do other than sit back and watch the fireworks? A HUGE missed opportunity.
At least the Manga had SOMETHING for Jirens “Character” to be a bit more “engaging” than how the Devs at Toei did for him, yet they’ve screwed it up at the very last second of the “Arc”.
A good way to better jiren would have been he target Goku because Goku caused the tournament of power. He could hold goku responsible for the destruction of multiple universes.
Thank you. That always bugged me. Goku convinced Zen-Oh to have the tournament. Jiren is a fighter for justice. Bam the story wrote itself but they missed it by a mile! Heck, when i saw how jacked Jiren was, i thought he was going to go into a heroic speech about the Strength of Justice!
He's not an antagonist he fails at every requirement even though he's supposed to be as he's the thing that could stop our heroes from winning however, I like the way he breaks down when he gets beaten as he goes from calm and collected to irritated and hysterical
Very interesting. Oddly enough when you explained the flaws in the plot, I enjoy the idea of writing that’s different for the sake of it. They’ve clearly written plot lines that were inspired by the story writing themes you pointed out, so I think this awkward story line was intentional, which to me, is exciting.
Of all places i did not expect to see John Hill in the comment section of a dragon ball video... .....and just when I thought he couldnt get any cooler.
Old video, but I think the premise is a bit off. Jiren, as a character, exists for the singular purpose of creating a scale to judge the characters against. He's not an antagonist. The antagonist of the TOP arc is the tournament itself, arguably the Zenos. Jiren exists to display that the overwhelming and ever increasing power levels of the two main characters of the series aren't this immediate «I Win» scenario. That somewhere else, somehow, there are still people who are simply stronger, without any asterisks, no catch, no disclaimer -- Jiren is, simply, stronger than Goku and Vegeta, and always will be. His very existence is what adds tension to the tournament, because from the onset the viewer already knows the show is obviously not going to just kill off the entire universe the story is based on. The question then shifts from: "Which form is Goku/Gohan/Vegeta gonna power up to in order to beat Jiren?" -- which is the resolution that every other antagonist features. It morphs into the tacit acknowledgement that the series is obviously NOT going to end in the TOP, and that if Goku's universe winning is a foregone conclusion, then HOW is that even going to happen if no amount of powerups will suffice? This is something the Super arcs have been really trying to do by introducing the pantheon -- to fix scaling. In fairness, the latter stages of the Moro arc and arguably the entirety of the Heeters arc does away with this sadly but at the time of TOP, this was very much the theme. It finally becomes about the "how", rather then the "how much". Jiren is a plot device, rather than a character. Just like the Angels, just like the Gods of Destruction. Not that I personally feel that Jiren needs more characterization, because he doesn't. He is a force; an uncomplicated example that sometimes your adversary is just *better* than you in every single way, and that's not always because he's had a more tragic background than you, nothing in his genes, not related to his race, sometimes it's not just because he's very very evil, or has more interesting motivations than you. Sometimes, you are just not good enough, period. It is only natural that most of the other characters spend a lot of time talking about him, precisely because he is such a compelling enigma. This? This is something Dragon Ball DESPERATELY needed, because it relied on vertical progression for far too long, to the point where it was already making the core cast feel unbelievable in the worst way possible. It's not even remotely relatable for characters like Vegeta and Goku to even feel threatened by anything anymore considering what they've done and seen. It's not believable that Goku's personality is, let's face it, effectively indistinguishable from how he was back in the Cell arc after everything he's gone through and the unimaginable powerups he's received since -- literally manipulating GOD POWERS at this point. They needed a solid, unmovable, unbeatable brick wall. One they couldn't just zenkai boost through. Which gave rise to IMO one of the coolest moments in the series' entire history. The entire team acknowledging that there is no beating Jiren in a fair fight, and that they'd have to find some other alternative to overcome these odds, is so incredibly unique. Goku finally was forced to do something he never has nor ever would have done before: Goku technically "schemes" to beat an enemy in a way that he would not consider a "fair fight". We went from Goku literally giving antagonists senzu to fight fairly, to him cooperating with Freeza to beat Jiren on a technicality. This is something people sorely miss from the earlier chapters of Naruto: When characters actually had to formulate strategies, to think on their feet, to overcome threats with their wit and resourcefulness rather than who has the bigger dick. Jiren did that in Dragon Ball, and he did that so fucking flawlessly. I also think you severely misunderstood the character in terms of its place in the plot. To bring up the quote you added: "Create an opponent who is exceptionally good at attacking your hero's greatest weakness." Jiren did **exactly** this. He did something no other adversary has ever done and likely will ever do. Goku's greatest, and arguably only weakness, is that his **only** tool for overcoming conflict is an unending assembly line of hairdos and powerups. If you take that away from Goku, he. Has. Nothing. Left. His stoic, self-assured, calm nature only exhacerbates this feel of fascination regarding the Tournament of Power. There is absolutely no doubts, no insecurities. Jiren is fully aware that he will win, and in a metanarrative way, the viewer is plainly aware that this is entirely true. So what happens next? Jiren is a fucking phenomenal plot device for the entire show. Criminally underrated, and a shame that the show went right back to zenkai boost fest lightshows which alternate between "I'm such a tragic soul", and "I am just cartoonishly evil". What a downgrade.
First off your channel is phenomenal. I think something to consider is that this was kind of the point. It's one of my favorite arcs because it's just a sporting event. Didn't need articificle growth and fake scary tensions. Was just a chance for my favorite players to make cool plays. Jiren I think would of been less fun if he had a personality. He was supposed to be a neutral wall. I think he uniqueness would of been lost if he was evil and needed to be defeated or would of made less fum.seeing cool.shit if we liked him to much.

However, it turns out that Jiren as Shin stated was just strong, plain and simple with no gimmicks or tricks. That being said, I would liked to seen Jiren to some unique abilities. One of most popular theories at the time was that he psychic or he can see into the future.
See this is why there's a problem with the fanbase. They always need something super flashy or gimmicky to catch their attention or to think it's "good". It shines a light on how low the attention span and intellect of most of the fanbase is.
@@StephenStraughan which is why toei can use constant repeating animation and frames and people with except it and call it good choreograph fights, ive seen people say that, and to an anime that abuse the repeated frames and animation than most
@@StephenStraughan That's Dragon Ball villains though. We've always had super strong enemies with unique traits that set them apart from one another. Jiren just being a massive wall of force. He's not even a villain, he's just an obstacle. Zeno is the actual "villain"... but not really because everybody saw how that whole arc would end. The whole arc is just as badly written as the rest of dbz and super. (nowhere near the dropped ball that gt was at least) but we don't care about that and eat it all up until something like Jiren pops up.
They should have combined jiren and Toppo. A super strong but quiet warrior motivated by justice, until he realizes he might lose and abandons everything he valued to become the next God of Destruction.
Jiren really isn’t a character he’s basically a machine than can make noises and punches really good and has the *literal* most basic classic stereotypical anime backstories in history
Yeah, even though I’m not a fan of the cell arc, Cells snarky personality at least allowed me to make it through it. Jiren definitely need something. What I will give credit to the Manga version, it gave him somewhat of a personality, he’s a lot more heroic and has since of honor and justice in a very Superman way. He might act like a bit of a cliche hero yeah but it’s at least something compare to being just a static loner. It’s about the only thing good in TOP arc in the manga, the rest was rushed garbage.
mabrada He makes the general story points. Then the writing staff have to fill in the blanks. And from what else I've heard, the show's production was on a very tight schedule. So they were likely rushed to come up with something, and due to the short amount of time could only come up with something very bare bones.
@@popstarchamp "General story points" Holy shit is worse than i thought Imagine something like "-Big grey guy is strong -Goku tests him -He is stronger -Goku goes white hair -he is stronger but not that much now...." lol
mabrada Yeah. But some of the comments I've seen here prove that you could do SOMETHING. It's just that the writers either: A. Suck at writing B. Had so little time they couldn't build up something good. Or C. Both
Jiren didn't get enough time for his back story, which was a terrible idea. It would've been great to see his training Regiment, like maybe he locked himself in a hyperbolic time chamber for thousands of years until he felt like he was the embodiment of absolute power.. Or maybe he has an ability to grow in power which he abused massively.. This is the problem... We shouldn't have to guess and theorize what made him so great.
They spent way too much time on filler characters like that annoying ass popstar group. I know Goku and friends were holding back to save stamina, but with how Jiren was being built up, it didn't matter if they saved their strength. They should have spent maybe 5-6 episodes on everything leading up to Jiren's fight and then built up Jiren. The fights were amazing and probably among the top 10 in the series, but fuck if I didn't give a shit who or why Jiren was.
I think they realized near the end that they didn't develop Jiren as a character at all and it shows so they panicked and threw in that cookie cutter background story(seriously the shit was straight out of naruto). Its a shame really he could of been a cool villain if they just gave him some character development Intead of having him stand there "brooding" like batman.
Terrible or not you can’t deny the fact that he commands presence, something most antagonists fail to do. His fight’s and his scenes alone still bring hype on rewatching dbs or watching others react to the show. Something that the other arcs fail to do on second or third rewatching.
Even before the start of the ToP, you feel his presence when Goku first meets him. Right a way you think "How the fuck will Goku even beat him?" And you keep thinking that til their 3rd fight, but even then Goku alone still cant beat him.
Andres ACOSTA he commanded presence only briefly to me because he lacked any other qualities. I feel as though Madara from Naruto was him done better. Both were stupidly op in their series but Madara had personality, a goal, hype and a good backstory. Jiren only had hype
One Punch Fish zamasu did not command any presence, regular zamasu got tossed around like a rag doll only being saved by immortality and black wouldn’t have been a threat if goku and vegeta worked together. Like wise merged zamasu was injured by kaio ken goku and fodderized by vegito and trunks. Jiren on the other hand kept on impressing viewers with his strength and putting on a good show. His fight against goku brought down all streaming services that’s how hype he and his fights are
carlackersii tbh madara is ruined for me thanks to black zetsu bs bc ig made madara look like a huge moron being used so casually. It devalued his achievements bc it was all “planned” idk but ever since black zetsu revelation on rewatches I don’t get as hyped anymore bc i know that he is getting played just as badly as everyone else. Tho i will admit the two meteors scenes are still the exception as that shit will never get old lol
Jiren was mysterious. We didn't know much about him. We didn't know who he was and why he was so strong. The mystery behind him is what made a lot of people get intrigued. Also, Jiren is not a villain. He isn't supposed to be. I think that was made clear throughout the arc. He isn't evil like Frieza, Cell, Buu, Goku black etc. so he's not a villain.
Jiren is if Madara came out of nowhere. Just because someone is "strong" doesn't make them interesting. They need to have an ideology and a goal to work towards.
Terrible... No? Just handled poorly. Perhaps I should watch the video first. But there is something to like about him. Likely not as an antagonist though.
Terrible maybe an overstatement but the majority of us were disappointed by how he was squandered. The disappointment in Jiren personally lingers more for me than all his positive qualities - especially the potential he had. The terrible backstory and his new year nerf ruined jiren for me
@@j0hnc00 I completely agree. He's a very disappointing character, but for me personally, there was the glimmer of hope for his character a points. Like after besting Vegeta and his second fight with ultra instinct where he becomes unusually desperate to end his fight with Goku. That and he's actually quite terrifying at times during the last few minutes of the Tournament of Power. Hell. Frankly I hate Tien during that arc more because they didn't do anything with him! But that's a personal bias talking.
@@j0hnc00 the backstory wasn't awful to me. It solidified why he only trusts himself and doesn't really fool with others. The guy killing his family isn't what we were supposed to pay attention to in the backstory it was the fact that he trained for years with people who he called friends to fight the guy only to have every last one of them abandon him when it was time to fight. That was what the backstory was about.
I feel this way about Super in general. With Whis being a benevolent character and so powerful himself, it takes all the stakes out of the battles. If shit hits the fan, Whis can always interfere and help out. DBZ was much more suspenseful because the Z-fighters were the first and last line of defense against the various threats in the Universe. There was not backup option.
I feel like the whole tournament arc would have been so much more captivating if jiren's character actually reflected someone who is completely good and heroic like his job. instead of being this stoic, quiet, intense looking guy, he would be friendly, charismatic, and compassionate but convicted towards his cause. with Goku being seen as the villian by the other universes, us viewers would feel conflicted in whose side we should choose and whose actually in the right and we'd be able to relate more to jiren being a new introduced character. To top it off, maybe jiren could actually win the tounarment but through fighting with Goku he properly came to understand his heart and intentions and decided to revive all the universes like goku wanted
You make loads of good points. I like your critiques and agree with the shortcomings of the TOP. You're right about Jiren finally stepping up as a "true antagonist" towards the end. That's definitely when he's at his most engaging, but I still find him generally intriguing for a few reasons. Something I don't see others mention at all (dare I call it the "genius" of the TOP) is that in any other circumstance, nearly all of these characters would be allies for the Z Fighters. Jiren is literally a superhero. He's a good guy who is being used as an antagonist, that's why he doesn't really want to fight any of these people. I find that very fascinating. The manga makes his non-lethal values and apathy towards the TOP much more clear from the beginning, which I again admit is a shortcoming of the anime. But once you know his values, that informs his stoic, non-engaging behavior and makes him much more palatable, dare I say engaging. He's also like an anti-Goku. Goku fights for fun, personal growth, and friends, Jiren fights only out of necessity, for justice, and rarely allows himself to trust in allies. They're also both aliens lol. I think they demonstrate his overwhelming power pretty well. He's virtually untouchable for oh so long. I like that he's such a wall. The concept of a mortal who is stronger than all the Gods of Destruction is the perfect mix of ridiculous and awesome that I can't help but love. There's a reason people make Chuck Norris jokes about him lol. Plus, Jiren has no transformations. He goes shirtless 100% full power, but this is all in his base form, which I find very cool and refreshing. (Same goes for Hit!) It really helps sell the fact that he is the strongest mortal in the multiverse. I think you admit his "villain" turn towards the end and the climax in general is good, so nothing more to comment there. I'm a sucker for stoic characters and again kinda love the moral strains that the TOP puts on all the contestants. It makes Vegeta care about Cabba, it makes Frieza have to work with the Z Fighters to survive, it makes Toppo forsake justice and become a hakaishin in an attempt to save his universe, and it makes Jiren drop his pretenses and do some gross acts in an attempt to protect his perspective of the world. It's a rocky, prolonged road, but I find a lot of neat stuff within it. I'm VERY curious to see what Jiren being more open from the start would've looked like.
Jiren: Oh are those your friends? Goku: Yeah.....? Jiren: Imma Kill em! Goku: Don’t you do it! Jiren: Imma do it! Goku: Don’t you do it! Jiren (Fires an energy ball) Goku: Dang it!
@@mahfoudseraf5995 Yea okay lmfao, the central character of arguably the 2 most hyped episodes in shonen history, the character Ultra Instinct debuted against, the character who has the best animated fight in the entire franchise excluding movies, he's forgettable? 💀💀💀
@Tsunayoshi Sawada I'm not debating whether or not the fight is good, I'm saying that the animation quality of Goku vs Jiren during their final bout was absolutely stellar and is without question a top 5 animated fight in the series. Maybe that was being a little too generous with me saying that it's the best excluding movies (although in my opinion it is). But still, my initial point stands, in the DB fandom, Jiren is a character who is well known.
Just finished the Video. Amazing as always Mark! Hey, for the next one, could you do Buu. He’s always been my favorite and I’d love to see an analysis like this done for him.
A way to start improving Jiren's character is have Universe 7 come up against opponents that they struggle with, have then disengage through various means only to run into Jiren, actively looking for opponents to "get this over with quickly", who proceeds to no sell every technique that made Universe 7 struggle.
I wonder where Super Eyepatch wolf got it from that antagonist is "One who initiates change" since: Antagonist Definition. In literature, an antagonist is a character, or a group of characters, which stands in opposition to the protagonist, which is the main character. The term “antagonist” comes from the Greek word antagonistēs, which means “opponent,” “competitor,” or “rival.” antagonist /anˈtaɡ(ə)nɪst/ noun noun: antagonist; plural noun: antagonists 1. a person who actively opposes or is hostile to someone or something; an adversary. "he turned to confront his antagonist" synoniemen: adversary, opponent, enemy, foe, nemesis, rival, competitor, contender; Meer opposition, competition, the other side; rarecorrival antoniemen: ally, friend, supporter 2. Biochemistry a substance which interferes with or inhibits the physiological action of another. "LSD is a serotonin antagonist" This would mean a protagonist, would possibly be loosely translated to one who would stop change, but in that sense, rather than a protagonist having to rise to take action. Which... would mean not all protagonists would be considered heroes then. One could easily consider a protagonist to be a villain then. In this context, Jiren would be a protagonist to stop the change of his universe being deleted. I don't know, I feel the term "loosely" has been exaggerated quite a lot, which ends up changing the whole meaning who is the bad guy and who is the good guy. Still enjoyed the video. 👍
i personally found jiren extremely cool and although i do agree he shud have been involved in more , i think that it was fine to have him as a "passive antagonist".
This arc supposed to be Goku as antagonist and Jiren as protogonist. It is started like that. They gave us hints about a warrior so strong fighting for justice. And goku was shown as a villian at the exhabition matches. Even goku said "Come at me with everything you have, i will defeat you!" This is a line where a villian will say. After tournament started it all failed somehow... Jiren should have stepped up the challange. True redemption of goku should be winning the tournament and reviving everyone.
I think you don't know what protagonist and antagonist means Protagonist is only main character and antagonist is just character who is againts protagonist so good and evil doesn't mean protagonist and antagonist Example:light yagami is protagonist since story is about him but he is villain and L is antagonist since he is againts light but he is hero
I like Jiren. I REALLY like Jiren. But, his lack of build up before the ToP seriously hurt his character. Because of the way his early scenes were handled, it's very difficult to see the subtext of his character, actions & scenes. He started incredibly stoic, said almost nothing, and wouldn't so much as bat an eye at his surroundings. But through his fights with Goku, Vegeta, Frieza, and 17, he changed in very compelling ways. First, Vegeta's never give up attitude prompted Jiren to give him open praise. Something he never did to anyone else, until the finale. Then, Goku & Vegeta's teamwork cracked his stoicism. He began to verbally lash out at there efforts. Next, Goku's mastery of Ultra Instinct shattered his emotionless demeanor. He was put back into his old state of helplessness. A state he threw away everything & everyone to never be in again. After living his life in the pursuit of absolute strength for emotional self preservation, Jiren was suddenly matched & bested by a man driven by friendship. It was a proverbial slap in the face & dismissal of everything he ever suffered through. That's why he lashed out at the spectators. To prove his point that friendship is fleeting. And this was all capped off with Goku, Frieza & 17 last stand. Them breaking his energy barrier like glass symbolized him finally dropping his stoicism. He finally understood the value of comrades & others. Not to mention the friendship him & Goku struck up as a result. This is why I think Jiren is overall a good character. He had a Rocky start, but after a little digging, you'll find his gold.
@@Trexirl I agree. Although every major moment like this in DB has major subtext, most have enough hints so that it's easy to find it's deeper meaning. But, in this case, the hints are few & far between.
Alternate telling of TOP: Jiren is a superman esque good guy who begrudgingly takes part in the tournament to save his universe. He immediately dislikes Goku for initiating the tournament and sees him as an enemy. They establish that, just like universe 6 and 7, the pride trooper universe and it's sister universe (magical girl universe) are both aware of each other AND have a strong relationship. Jiren remains mostly calm until his sister universe is erased after the final warrior of the universe is defeated by Goku. Goku says something like, "they were strong" with a smile on his face (Goku plans to wish all universes back from the start). After seeing this Jiren snaps and the rest of the tournament is Goku and Jiren falling in and out of conflict as they both get stronger
Cool but unfortunately they would have to develop new characters from this "sister universe" and the writing staff clearly seemed pressed for time at the end. Would you really be satisfied if jiren snapped over aniraza being defeated? They chose the safe route and went with universe 6 for char development. Should have been Hit getting some shine instead of that abomination of a half broly/half lesbian who is some how a ssj2. Or better yet they could have just focused on Jiren's motivations a little more. Arc is no doubt still the best arc with perhaps the best DB fight of all time. I just it wish it was more consistent with less filler.
@@uncouthLIyouth he is talking about Universe 2. Twin universes: U6 and U7 (6+7=13) U2 and U11 (2+11=13) U3 and U10 (3+10=13) U4 and U9 (4+9=13) U5 and U8 (5+8=13) U1 and U12 (1+12=13)
@@exequielbreton4393 regardless of the actual cannon twin universe was my point was they would have to make you care about those characters in universe 2 then. I can't even think of a single character. Jiren is going to be devastated because Ribrienne was eliminated?
I completely agree with this video analysis. I found the story of the tournament of power arc very compelling. The actual situation that 10 teams get put into this situation which is controlled by a higher power is a good story because it is one that a person can identify with from his own life and it masterfully set up the question of who is villain and who is hero that everyone has to answer in his own life.
I actually like Jiren. He’s not the generic cliche bad antagonist that is evil and is pictured by killing like vegeta, frieza, cell, buu and black. He’s a hero and a better one than Goku that was shown to help his world with the pride troopers. The absolute mystery behind his abilities is what make the audience explode around the world (the good way). First time I saw so many people watching in huge screens the final battle and wanted Jiren to be defeated finally. It actually worked perfectly with Goku too, finding a wall in front of him. Not all antagonists have to be like the books that you always depict in your videos, as if if there is no other way to create an amazing story.
lol ¿a Hero and better than Goku? We all now Goku is not exactly a knight in shining armor but he's not a cold-blood killer, unlike Jiren which tried to kill Goku's friends in the ToP in order to provoke him. As for him being interesting for "being a wall for Goku" makes him even worse, because prior antagonist like Frieza and Cell were also walls that Goku and the gang had to break with the plus that they had their own distinctive personality unlike Jiren.
Xfusion yeah hero. Goku may think he’s not a hero but we all know he is, he saved the world numerous times. But, without the dragonballs he wouldn’t existed. Jiren saved constantly everyone without “dragonball handicap” plus he’s stronger than Goku. Frieza was interesting, Cell was less interesting and buu was mundane. Enough with this formula. Jiren imo was better BECAUSE he didn’t follow the same and same(bad guy kills to appear BAAAAD, woooo). He was an impossible wall for Goku and the others. That’s why ultra Instinct worked, that’s why universal survival arc was better than buu arc or even Cell.
@@Xfushion2 You have to remember that that's not how Jiren normally acts in his Universe. In that moment, his entire world view was being completely shattered. Goku was essentially telling him with his fists that his entire life was a lie. Picture The Truman Show. He was angry, and likely scared, and so he lashed out in a manner that he thought would preserve his one central belief in life.
I agree 100% like it doesn’t have to be by those stupid ass books to show how a character should be written lmao and who gives a shit about his back story. Like yeah it could’ve been better. but at the end of the day, Jiren brought in some of the best moments in dragon ball
Just to point some things out. Amongst the hate for Jiren, i wanted to say that fuck Jiren is very well written when it comes to making a character feel powerfull. The best moment being when he WELCOMES the Genkidama and let's it happen. This has never happened before, really never. No one said to Goku "Throw your Genkidama, i'll wait for it". This was a staple of the Genkidama, it always succeeded at leaving the guy destroyed (yes even Frieza) but this time, not a fucking mark. So the argument of not having a good "show" about his strength is kinda weird + I think you were a bit unfair on Jiren. The first apparition made everyone hype, i still remember it now. This onimous aura around him and just him meditating (which we have only really seen Piccolo do and it was a tastement of his wisdom ) just made him look very very very strong and wise about it. His second appearence as he said " Get out " to Goku, with a surprising speed made him feel even more powerfull and scary. If you take Jiren as the embodiment of strength, you can enjoy him so much. (also btw his story is kinda if goku never had the dragon ball to ressurect his friends) How he "shatters" everything emphazises his strength so much it's maddening. So in my opinion he works fully well as an intimidating opponent, he just needed a better motive and story.
I struggle to even call Jiren a "character"...he's a plot point that just kind of occurs during the story. He's "big numbers!" in humanoid form with 0 personality or anything else to make him interesting.
I love Jiren. He's not like the other Villains. He's the most human of all the villains. He's been betrayed by trust so therefore he puts up walls. He's not as straight forward as other villains bent on world or universal domination/destruction.
But thankfully, in the manga things happened faster... and other guys outside u7 take out opponents (including Jiren) Call it rushed, but the manga version of the t.o.p. is more realistic (even in db terms) than the anime one... because everyone outside Goku, Vegeta, Frieza, c17, c18, Piccolo, Gohan, Kale, Kalifa, Cabba, Hit, Jiren, Toppo and the beerus like guy, was a foddler, and as such it's only legit they were taken out without any fanfare.
Yeah, it would have made things a lot more interesting if the other Universes actually put up more of a fight and got more eliminations than Universe 7.
