Beerus' character is totally fine, the problem is they gave him WAY too much screen time. As one of the most powerful beings in the multiverse, his presence should carry a lot of weight and be used sparingly. They should have used his nonchalant and gluttonous attitude as a reason to keep him off screen, and allow Whis to interact with Goku and Vegeta by himself while Beerus is off doing things he finds more worthy of his time. There's no reason a god of destruction should have been turned into some guy that just casually hangs out with mortals all the time because he has nothing better to do. Narratively, nothing would change if you removed Beerus from 95% of the scenes involving Whis, Goku, and Vegeta, but his status as a character to be respected would have still been intact. As a destroyer god, Beerus shouldn't be sitting around watching any fight he claims to not have an interest in who the winner is, he should be treated as someone who's above the squabbles of mortals, only appearing when his interest in a fight is genuinely piqued, whether it be because of the entertainment value he'd find in the fight or because the stakes or so high he can't ignore it. This way Beerus' presence during a conflict would signify that an event carries serious weight, instead of his presence simply sucking all the tension out of the fight because big uncle Beerus could just step in and save his friends.

I think the ToP used Beerus well by literally restraining him, forcing him to learn to respect those who do not have a same power level, but similar determination. I think that lets the audience benefit from his personality and put him through a growth arc without many of the problems you discussed in this video.

The real problem of the character is that he's trash in Fighterz

I think Beerus himself is a good character. He's funny and entertaining and imposing all at the same time. But they just didn't really know how to use him effectively past the Battle of Gods arc in my opinion.

The fact that they used Whis for time travel, to me, feels like they NEEDED to do something with those characters, otherwise they would have been useless to the plot

I love Beerus to death. And the way I see it is like this: it’s the Turtle and the Hare. He is better, faster and stronger but Is lazy. Goku and Vegeta are slowly catching up, bc they choose to keep improving and moving forward, while Beerus lays and sleeps. Him being a constant threat n never involving helps

“I will not let you destroy my world.” Always shakes me to the core, it was like Goku and Frieza again. The stakes were there, and incredible adversity. With Beerus’ stance of neutral, it shows an interesting arc, because I think he honestly hates it after awhile. He has IMMENSE power but he’s not entirely allowed to do anything, and EVEN WITH this power he’s still outclassed by angels and Zeno. I think that’s the great thing with his and Gokus relationship, someone is always stronger. He wants to make Goku the next bad ass in the universe or at least that’s what I think.

Beerus is my favorite. Your suggestion that he's like a father watching kids fight is spot on. Very godlike. I love that perspective while the world is on the brink of destruction.

Lack of Ten Shin? Yeah, he is missing a lot of times

Personally, i like beerus's character. It is intresting along with his place in the db universe.....BUT HIS VOICE (so soothing)

"Imagine how suspenseful Freeza's defeat of Goku would have been, had Vegeta been the only one left to settle things" Not very suspenseful at all. We know that Freeza's tired, injured, and burning through energy at an alarming rate. We know Vegeta's been training alongside Goku. Freeza had no chance, and we can see that when Vegeta casually beats him like a Freeza Soldier. Beerus wasn't the issue with that movie. The issue was Freeza's new form was a joke. We're told it's 'stronger than Blue', but it never really proves it, and in the end Freeza has to get in a cheap shot(in such a stupid way) to beat Goku. Freeza's power crapping out is what really killed the tension. If Goku had been backed into a corner, and required Vegeta's help to stand a chance against Freeza, forcing them to work together(ala Super Broly) this would have been WAY better. Removing Beerus doesn't remove how little tension Freeza delivers, when he's running out of gas, and has to get help from his henchmen to not get his ass handed to him any further.

I agree with him removing tension from most scenes, but I loved every scene he was in. He even elevated the tension in crucial scenes in the show. When he confronts zamasu, when he threatens to kill goku, and when he warns frieza after he trapped goku in the Hakai. I hope we see more of his serious side.

Beerus reminds me of a bitter middle-aged man with three ex-wives, his own successful burger joint, and a fondness for cheap booze He's a great character

I really like Beerus as a character. Somehow, "God is competent and can totally save you, but just doesn't care enough about you or your problems to get involved in your bullshit." seems like a new direction for Dragon Ball. I like it. I never felt like a cold and uncaring god watching over deflated the tension in Resurrection F.

You know, the things the series is named after? Someone dies? No problem. Just wish them back. Personally, I'd like it to be written in the show somehow that the regular dragon balls get destroyed/deactivated permanently or something, and the super dragon balls are the only remaining namesake artifacts of the show. I like the idea behind the super dragon balls. They're far more powerful than the regular dragon balls, yet they alleviate far less tension than the regular ones. The regular dragon balls, are the main casts play thing that they've grown to completely take for granted now, while the super dragon balls present themselves with a heavy restriction of usage in that you basically can't use them without the aid of the gods. The problem with Super is that they have both, Beerus (and Whis) as well as the regular dragon balls. I'd prefer Beerus to replace the regular dragon balls as the thing the main cast uses as a crutch. Because unlike the regular dragon balls, Beerus is sort of a wild card. He may not agree with you. He may not be your friend in a particular situation. He may choose to be lazy and not lift a damn finger. He may outright get angry at you and become your enemy. Where as, the dragon balls, you just gather them fuckers and wish for whatever the hell you damn want (okay, not whatever you want, but still...). The Dragon Ball franchise, as its name implies, needs to have dragon balls in them. In DB and Z, there were only the regular ones, so they couldn't be replaced. But now there's super dragon balls. If those were the only ones, the main cast couldn't use them as a crutch. There could easily be plotlines where the cast has to convince the deities to let them use them, which would obviously be met with great resistance.

Imo the single greatest moment of beerus is when he intervenes with zamasu and destroys him

Beerus has one massive positive. He’s essentially given a power ceiling and a goal for Goku and Vegeta to get to and his presence is a constant reminder of how much further Goku and Vegeta have got to go and it also gives a good estimation on how much Longer Super has. Like you said Beerus isn’t a villain but an antagonist. I also feel like he’s either the endgame for Super or Something even he struggles with is the end game. That’s what is so great about Beerus’ character.

Really never understood the hate for Beerus. He has an interesting and inspired character design, an interesting Lil character progression in which we see him slowly care more about the people of earth, and he served as a gateway to expanding the dragon ball mythos. Yeah he had a touch too much screen time but there’s certainly worse characters.

As the end of the Universal Survival Arc showed, Beerus doesn't need to suck the tension out of the story. It does that on its own at this point.

(Haven't watch the video yet). In a series that was about reaching new heights in power, Beerus is the ever-present, unmovable, skill-ceiling that Super keeps banging it's head against with each arc.

I think Beerus is a great character that simply gets misused sometimes. That's more a problem with the plotting than the character though.

Those are the arguments I’ve always made and I get bitched at.

I first started watching Dragon Ball when I was 11 (1996 Saturday mornings on upn I believe, in the usa) and have been watching it ever since. It's has been 24 years now and I'm not ashamed of it.

Making a point to go back and rewatch all your content (priority to Dragon Ball) again. Sucks to see what happened over the holidays and sucks to not see as many videos come from your channel. With that, I know I a lot of us are waiting to hear more of your thoughts on the upcoming movie this April. You’re one of the biggest voices to a lot of folks on DB character progression and story/narrative arcs. Too understandable that you’re probably still apprehensive over the whole ordeal I’m sure you’re still battling. Regardless, have to let you know, the viewers still love you Mark. You’re a talented dude and we haven’t forgotten… Haven’t forgotten your talent, the joy you bring folks through your content, the knowledge or the deeper inter workings of plot that you impart, and your genuinely positive and hopeful spirit. I'm a week late to this video, so I doubt anyone will see my comment. But with that said here is my opinion, I lost all sense of tension with the Dragon Ball series long before Beerus was introduced. Simply put the name is why, the dragon balls were for a majority of the time in the series what took away the tension, "Oh, half the universe is dead because of Freeza? Just wish them back to life with the dragon balls.". When the Universe Survival Arc began, I thought maybe their will be tension and stakes, but then it was revealed the super dragon balls were a prize. I knew immediately the wish was going to be bring back the erased universes, and for one last insult lets have the Zenos say this was the only wish we would allow. So ever since Beerus joined the show he has been my favorite character, and his style of comedy that sucks the tension dry actually makes me laugh because their wasn't any tension to begin with. The "problem" brought up in this episode was always in my eyes the writers having a laugh with the idea of their being tension in the show.

I think that Beerus presence makes the scenes better. Beerus is like that hater that is there when you do try to surpass your limits and doesnt even pay attention because youre so far beneath him. It motivates you to become a beast, so you can make that sucker acknowledge you.

Beerus is so appropriate for Dragon Ball that even with Mark's selection of DBZ soundtrack Beerus still fits.

Beerus would make an amazing spin off protagonist

Much like you the first time I saw Beerus and learned who and how he was, I was pretty much immediately won over. And though it soon became stale, I do still love that he and Whis are so enamored by the food of Earth because it's so endearing and relatable to real human experiences of growing up knowing only your own cultural cuisine and then finding out about another culture's cuisine and discovering and falling in love with incredible new flavors/textures. And it grounds these incomprehensibly powerful deities in a really natural and tangible way without coming across as feeling forced.

It just makes me sad that we’ll never really get that “wow this new guy or villain has to be the strongest in the universe” feeling like how did towards cell, buu and frieza, because there will always be a higher, stronger and better fight. The stakes just don’t feel as high any more. I do love beerus but at the same time I don’t. That feeling of watching goku fighting frieza was a legendary feeling, but looking back at it now, if you think real hard into it, it’s just the “second best fight”. I like but hate the aspects of “gods” in dbs. I’d like your opinion on it.

Beerus exists for comic relief and he does it amazingly.

I see Beerus as that overarching goal that’s ever present, but nothing that can be done right now. He needs to be ever present as that reminder. Does his presence mean agony will always overcome his next challenge? Maybe, but when has that ever not been the case except Cell?

Beerus isn't what's sucking away tension. Taking place before End of Z is.

I feel introducing Zenos took out more tension than Beerus did, especially after the Goku Black Arc. I think I would've preferred if Beerus was the only Deity introduced in DBS and only Universe 7 existed, then the strongest being would always be Beerus and that would be the level goku and vegeta will always try to reach

They should have played with the ambiguity of Beerus. Have him be the one to train Frieza, giving the impression he's out for revenge against Goku. If it appears he's backing Frieza the tension remains. After Vegeta wins you can reveal Beerus has just trained him to help the Saiyan pair in their training. If you think about it, Beerus' absence would have actually made Resurrection F more tense. When Beerus says he won't intervene, it just comes off as him being lazy; Whis, on the other hand, can be seen as similar to the Watcher from the Marvel universe.

I think you should upload Beerus breakdance spinning for 10 hours with whatever that track was. I have not been keeping track of DB for a long time, but couldn't they have kept his appearances sporadic? Unless some contract says the character needs to be in X many shots over X many episodes, having an antagonist watch from afar giving occasional exposition is good. This happens in Granblue Fantasy for a bit and the antagonist was infinitely more interesting there, only being in the spotlight every once in a while. As that has now changed I can understand the frustration of having some far stronger character just hanging over the main cast, just being there and playing nice. Your take on what could have been was great, every DragonBall fan would have loved to see that moment play out as you described it. It would have been better if the Weiss character (I have no idea who they are) gave a throwaway line about Beerus watching them and Frieza treating him as an apathetic observer.

I'd laugh with great respect, if Beerus story is never fleshed out and instead Toriyama's response will be: " Adored and respected, with great power over the masses, but he is still just a cat."

Yeah, I remember seeing the clip with Frieza and Beerus somewhere and thinking, "They're really doing this?" Kinda glad I didn't watch all of Super, and it's a shame things went down that route. That being said, watching your videos has given me an idea for a potential rewrite. Here's my idea: Beerus, the God of Destruction, is dying and foresaw powerful Saiyan could replace him. He could first think that Saiyan is Goku (and not hard to believe so) but he learns that isn't the case after their first sparring. He could go back to his home planet to slow down the process of dying all while sense for the powerful being he first foresaw. This keeps him way out of the rest of the story unless he is really needed, like with Zamasu, but he also can keep his eye on Earth. Of course, to tie it together, Beerus could realize the Saiyan with immense power he foresaw could actually be Broly, creating plenty of interesting story possibilities.

I think they should have written Beerus with a little bit more authority over Whis. For instance, in RoF, before Whis could reverse time, he could have asked for Beerus' approval before bringing the Earth back. Then he could show us more of a cold shoulder and would compliment well with how he acts in parts of the Future Trunks (2, Electric Boogaloo) arc when he just straight up deletes main timeline Zamasu. Beerus' greatest strength is unbias, so sidelineing him is definitely the best move, as he's essentially a glass ceiling for Goku to break.

Beerus is a tension killer in 2013 he was a great antagonist but he's literally a tension killer his last big moment was in 2016 and that was when he killed Zamasu

4:36 is my fav moment in ALL of Dragonball I didn’t like most of super because it never even got close to this feeling until his last fights with jiren and that took like 200 episodes to get to lol.

There's still one thing looming over Beerus's head that should come to light as a catalyst for a shift in the status quo.

*Now imagine if Beerus was the overall villain/antagonist in the series: Change some of the roles of the gods around and let's say that he is suppose to awaken and then destroy the 7th universe.* Of course it doesn't have to start from episode one, you can still do your fun mini arcs, you could do the entire RoF arc, but maybe instead of killing frieza, Goku opts to let him go... again... eh I'm sure writers could make something convincing. Now, when we do learn of Beerus and his plans from King Kai or the Supreme Kai, Goku Vegeta and friends think "Oh shit, we gotta train" (Probably even the exact same ToP gang, excluding frieza) Blah blah training arc and we get the first confrontation... On New Namek. We learn that Beerus (and maybe Whis), rather than mass-wiping planets, are actually looking for potential warriors to become new Gods of Destruction before eradicating each planet. Through the grapevine, our heroes find out that they are on Namek, and instant transmission to confront them. When they arrive, there can be a moment where they realize they don't sense any energy higher than a regular Namekian's, and after try to search, Beerus "appears" behind them and surprises them. After a little dialogue, Goku activates hero mode and says, "If you're looking for a fight, then fight me!" Beerus, as per his usually cockiness and being "THE God of Destruction," holds back his full power. Even still, Goku goes through his transformations 1/2/3 pretty quickly. Remember there is no no SSJ God/Blue in this version, so maybe a SSJ3+Kaioken combo, but he is still clearly beaten. Piccolo and Gohan try to join in, but are just as quickly beaten. Vegeta confronts him next (He has never heard of him in this version) and keeps up his usually cockiness. Maybe we can get a bit of fan-service and get SSJ3 Vegeta, or some sort of new technique but, even after a short struggle, he too is defeated. While Beerus is monologue-ing about how disappointed he is, Goku instant transmissions them all back to Earth. So at this point, maybe we can do a little Hyperbolic timechamber sequence, but even after their year in the Chamber, Goku and Vegeta come out visibly disappointed in their progress. Everyone is contemplating what to do at the lookout, when Beerus arrives. A hard fought battle ensues between the heroes and Beerus. Beerus hasn't seen some of these people, like #17, #18, Krillin Yamcha. So he still holds back to test through these people as potential GoD candidates. Of course, they're all fairly easily defeated after some time. Once again it's down to Goku and Vegeta. Maybe during the Time Chamber year, they learned some sort of pseudo-ulstra instinct. Some form that is basically non-mastered ultra instinct. Maybe some more fan service, but Vegeta could've also learned instant-transmission and both he and Goku use it in the ensuing fight. Also, I'd like this semi-ultra-instinct to be like kaioken in the sense that they can go SSJ1/2/3 while using it. So at this point, they are still getting decimated. However, Beerus takes an interest in their new technique, it seems like ultra instinct, after all. So he says something to the effect of, "I want to bring both of you back to [whatever god realm] and see if you have the potential to become Gods of Destruction." Goku: "If we accept, will you leave our universe alone?" Beerus: "Hahahaha, no.... Once I bring you two back, I'll finish clearing out this universe so the omni king can start a new one." Goku takes no time to grab Vegeta and instant-transmission them to the Supreme Kai. They both know the last chance they have: Potara Fusion. Blah blah blah, Beerus tracks them down and they get ready to fight for the last time on the Supreme Kai's World. BAM Vegito is born (again) The fight begins almost immediately, and Beerus is clearly using a significantly higher amount of power than he had been before. Not exactly out of necessity, but because he's starting to lose interest in 'recruiting' them. Vegito, as per the usual Saiyan way, starts going through the transformations. SSJ 1 puts him at an advantage, but only for 1 hit. Beerus gets just a little more serious and overpowers Vegito again. SSJ2, once again, gets Beerus off-guard, but only for a few more hits. Beerus throws them into the ground like a ball of trash. The next transformation is obvious, but as Vegito it is much MUCH more powerful than anything they've done before. SSJ3 is a struggle to obtain, just like when Goku was showing it to Buu in Z, Vegito takes his stance and begins the full 22 minute long power-up (Kidding lol) But it is very intense, and during this power-up, you can see one of the potara earrings get a crack in it, and finally BOOOM SSJ3 Vegito is born. An insane about of engergy and lighting flowing off of him, the ultimate fan-service moment. Mixed with the normal yellow ki flowing around, there are flickers of the imperfect ultra-instinct ki as well. Just little bits and pieces, though. Beerus says, "Then allow me, as well." Beerus takes a wide stance, and very quickly wraps a cloak of the God of Destruction Ki or whatever around himself. Vegito doesn't hesitate and immediately rushes him. The clash is blowing chunks out of the Planet, and very quickly Beerus realizes Vegito is a lot closer to him in terms of strength than he expected. "I'll offer one last time, Saiyan. Become a God of Destruction and I'll consider training you myself." "Not a chance!" The battle continues. Even though it seems like an equal struggle, Beerus is clearly landing more hits, striking Vegito 4 to 5 times before Vegito can counter with one of his own. This is how the fight continues for just a while longer, until Vegito eventually reverts back into SSJ2. He charges Beerus one more time, but this time is smacked down before he could strike. "...And it seems _that_ may be your limit. You were an admirable foe, Saiyan warrior, you should be proud to have put up such a fight against a Destroyer God." Just as Beerus is finishing his speech, he senses something from Vegito. Rising from the ground, his hair begin flickering from Golden to white. His Yellow ki is replaced with the cloak from ultra instinct. After a bad-ass transformation sequence, hes done it. Vegito is now in Mastered Ultra-Instinct mode. Beerus looks on. He doesn't speak, but he is slowly raising his power, that purple cloak returning around him. They continue their fight. It's insanely intense but Vegito starts to edge out Beerus, who is struggling to keep up now. As they clash, close up shots show the Potara earrings. They are not only just cracking, but pieces of them are breaking off. You can tell this form may come to an end. And it does. Beerus, entirely on the back foot, prepares for another one of Vegito's strikes. But just in that moment, they unfuse and both Goku and Vegeta are quick to react, turn SSJ1, and start flanking Beerus on both sides, coming in for a double-strike from the left and right. Beerus lets out a scream, raises his hands in the air and smashes both Goku and Vegeta down at the same time. They are both immediately knocked out of their Super Saiyan forms and lie crippled on the ground. Beerus approaches them, fully wrapped in his purple ki. Honestly, I'm not sure exactly how it should end. Either the Good ending of "To think a universe could produce such a powerful opponent. It would be a shame to end it here." or something like that. *OR* Maybe it's clear Beerus is still weak, so either Goku or Vegeta catches him off guard and instant-transmissions Beerus and themselves into a sun or some shit. I dunno. *BUT, you get the idea. Beerus would've made for a really fucking cool arc if he was much more actively set as the antagonist. You could also have Frieza come back, maybe even die to Beerus before that final fight.*

You got a lot right in this and my one disagreement I had with you is that Whis DID NOT need to be a part of the Broly movie. Correct me if I’m wrong but the only thing he did was distract Broly while they did the fusion dance and Frieza was able to do that himself. Not only that they could have just as easily wrote out the 2 messing up the fusion twice if they chose to do so.

I think what might have fixed it would have beerus for the most part fully disappearing until the tournament or for training occasionally kinda filling the hole that king kai left open

After coming back to this vid I started thinking... they could've had Beerus and Whis leave Earth with food only to come back for more food OR have them only appear when Freeza is destroying the planet. Either option keeps them both away from the battle, returning only to rewind time and get some grub... is that a good idea?

I think that might be why the trunks arc in super is arguably my favorite. Beerus is in the arc but isn't even in the timeline all the big fights happen. So the tension is still there

Beerus to Totally Not Mark: "Hakai."

His layed back atittude and cold but charming personality actually made him my favourite character. That's why i was sad that he wasn't really "used" as a character (after his arc) but rather as a plot device.

This is a great analysis. I feel like the ultimately needed to happen was for beerus to either go back to sleep or get surpassed by Goku.

I think a big part of the problem is that they never really explored the job of a destroyer. To this point, his involvement in conflicts seems random or better yet "when the plot needs it". Beerus has been a destroyer for a very long time, I feel like there has to be more to his job than just destroying at random especially now that we know he's not on top of the pyramid and has to answer to Zeno and the High Priest. I think if they better explain his job and we better understand the limitations to his involvement (when he can and can't interfere with mortal fights), that could really address the problems you've stated.

I feel like his role as "I'm too powerful to bother with what's happening in the plot" kinda defeats any purpose he has to even BEING there in the first place. Otherwise he himself is actually pretty enjoyable. Edit; huh, I posted this before really watching, but at the Resurrection/arc bit basically says what I was thinking exactly.

You pretty much nailed it. The main problem with Beerus (and Wris, to an extent) is that you have this really overpowered character that is an ally of the main heroes, but stays on the backseat watching shit ensues. Each saga of DBS always tries to come up with an excuse to keep Beerus and Wris absent from the main action just because he'd win any fight he is in, since he is more powerful than Goku and Vegeta. So they have to push him away to keep the stakes high. It is the exact same deal with Thor and Hulk being conveniently pushed away from the other Avengers prior the events of Captain America 3: Civil War, because whichever side had either Hulk or Thor would be at great advantage.

Freeza was the reason i stopped watching as a kid. From memory, i think their fight lasted 3-4 months and there was a cutaway after that said something like "6 months later" and that was too much

I think whats missing from this video is the impact the others characters have had on Beerus. He's changed since BOTGs. He's less murderous and more involved in their lives. I think he could potentially be a new rival for Goku in the future. We're getting to the point where only the Gods, Angels and certain individuals (like Goku/Vegeta) are able to be a challenge for Goku. I can see a race between the saiyans and Beerus for control over Ultra Instinct. This type of thing could challenge their relationship and potentially begin a regression, if not momentary, in Beerus. I've got no gripe with Beerus whatsoever. Great character and implementation. I do agree though that there is a problem. There is a upfront exposure to what is possible and Beerus can act at anytime as a kind of equalizer, outside of that which he cannot directly act (like a tournament).

Everything is a problem for this guy.

I feel like Whis is more of a problem character, seeing as he literally can rewind time and bring people back to life on top of already being stronger than Beerus or Goku.

I get your complaints about the Ressurection F parts, but Beerus doesnt suck the tension out of any other part of the series. The universe 6 tournament, Goku Black arc and Universe Survival Arc all have tension despite Beerus being there. And the Broly movie only has two scenes with Beerus in it (one at the beginning and one at the end) so I don't see how he damages the tension there either.

There are a lot of Dragon Ball, Z and Super characters, but there will NEVER be another Beerus. Yes his brother is similar, but Beerus is one of a kind. He is one of the most powerful beings in existence. He has been alive (not awake) for a long time. So one would think with such age one would be wise and disciplined? NOPE! He is a greedy, whiny, self centred and egotistical god. He loves food and a good battle. He's the worst aspects of Goku and Vegeta. Gluttony and pride. And yet, he is one of the funniest characters in Dragon Ball Super. Every time Beerus was onscreen, I knew something awesome, hilarious or terrifying was going to happen. For modern day anime, he will be remembered forever.

I think a Beerus and Frieza showdown would be a great plot. Didn't Frieza saying during TOP that he wanted to get the Superdragon balls to make himself a god and eventually kill Beerus. There is a lot of tension and history between Frieza and Beerus and Frieza is so arrogant he is capable of doing anything to claim power.
