Well I mean the reason SAS has such a harsh reaction is because it’s a stupid hill for Redick to die on. It’s a terrible take. Are today’s players better? Of course because there’s advancements in training, nutrition and medicine. But if you put the player’s of the 80s and 90s in the present they would be able to equally benefit from those advancements and if you put the players from now in the past they would suffer from the same deficiencies of the past. Just because things are more advanced today doesn’t mean everyone from the past was inferior. Redick doesn’t seem to be able to grasp that concept.
@LL-zm9go
@LL-zm9go 26 дней назад
How do you 90's fan not understand the concept of expansion?- Players were drafted off current teams. Creating vacancies on those very teams, in which players not already in the league were needed, to fill those spots. What does this mean? Rosters were weaker across the league, with players who were not NBA-caliber without the expansion. Lastly, if you think players have not evolved in the sport in terms of skill & versatility in 30 years- you are too lost to even understand logic.

@@eaglewinnings8003 You could say the same thing about the NBA in the 60s yet no one considers Wilt's or Bill Russell's achievements the same because of their era. NBA players back then were not as good as those in the 80s and 90s in the same way players from Jordan's era were not as good as current NBA players. Jordan was literally playing against plumbers and HVAC technicians. The standard for players in the NBA today is not even comparable to Jordan's era, thats Reddick's point.

Two years ago, Michael Jordan appeared in the Top 75/76 celebration in Cleveland. Kevin Garnett said many players who were selected for that top 75 were shocked when MJ showed up. KG said MJ sucked all the air in the room. He still had that presence reminding everyone he’s still the GOAT. Jordan had the loudest cheers when his name was announced. He’s in frickin’ Cleveland, LeBron territory, and a city that MJ tortured. Hit two buzzer beaters to eliminate the Cavs in 1989 and 1993. And now Cleveland is cheering for MJ? 😂 Remember, Jordan was in Daytona that same morning. I didn’t think he would show up in Cleveland knowing how elusive he’s been and assuming Pippen would be there but he wasn’t. Jordan is still the GOAT. All eyes on him that day while drawing the loudest cheers. Dudes like Harden looked starstruck when MJ entered the room. LeBron doesn’t have that same mystique and presence. LeBron might be a King but Jordan is GOD to people. A God trumps a King.

‘Load Managing’ when you are more than able to play, being a top superstar and getting ‘stats’ when there’s less of an emphasis on defense and more of an emphasis on everyone jacking up 3s (even someone near/above 7ft tall)…..that’s watered down. And don’t forget about ‘top superstars’ jumping on the same squad to have an easier time winning in the regular season.

Winning 4 rings with a stacked deck? WTH do you think Jordan did to win 6 championships?.... He stacked the deck. Don’t forget, Jordan never won a championship without Pippen, & for their 6 championship runs, with the exception of points, Pippen led Jordan in every other statistical category (Reb, AST, BLK, STL). You can’t say playing next to Pippen (who was a top 5 player at the time), didn’t make Jordan’s life a little easier. On top of that, Jordan also had the luxury of playing under the greatest HC of all time in Phil Jackson, & was surrounded with solid role players (like Rodman, Harper, Kukoč, Paxson, Kerr, Grant). Who did LeBron play with that was better than Pippen, & which HC did Lebron play under that was better than Phil Jackson?

To specifically target JJ's comment about the Mavericks being added in 1981... JJ omitted the fact that they became contenders pretty quickly lead by Rolando Blackman, Mark Aguirre, Derek Harper..Maybe he didn't know and just assumed they sucked in the beginning. When MJ came into the league in 84, Dallas was a solid team already, better than the Bulls for sure.
@MmaMadman85
@MmaMadman85 26 дней назад
That isn't his point, His point is that when the league adds new teams they always have to add new players AND do a protected draft for each team. So what JJ was saying is that the good teams were always going to be good because the great players got protected from being drafted to a new team, hence why he omitted the playoffs, but the regular season stats from players during this chaotic time should be irregular because teams were constantly going through expansion drafts.

The Win Average of the bottom 5 teams in the league during Jordan's Era was 22 wins... The Win Average of the bottom 5 teams in the league during Lebron's Era is 22 wins... Redick provided ZERO statistics or data to back up his ridiculous claim, no evidence, no insight whatsoever. It's interesting that he failed to bring up the Orlando Magic, given that he was talking to SHAQ! The Magic were one of those 6 'expansion' teams, added in 1989, and they became an incredibly strong and competitive team within only a few years of their addition to the league, drafting Shaq in 1992 and acquiring Penny Hardaway one year later! This 'expansion team' knocked the Bulls out of the Playoffs in 1995! The Miami Heat was another one of the 6 expansion teams, added in 1988. They drafted Glen Rice in 1989 and though they initially endured a few seasons of mediocrity, Pat Riley's arrival as the new head coach in 1995 ushered in the Tim Hardaway and Alonzo Mourning era. Riley drastically transformed the new-look Miami Heat into a defensive-minded juggernaut and they quickly became championship contenders. They progressed all the way to the Eastern Conference finals in 1996-97 where they were defeated by the Bulls. The Heat would go on to become the #2 seed in the East in the 1997-98 season but eventually lost to the Knicks in the Playoffs. The players that joined these 6 expansion teams weren't plucked off the streets, these were professional NBA players already drafted to other existing NBA teams. In an NBA expansion draft, the new NBA teams were allowed to acquire players from previously established teams in the league but not all players on a given team were available during an expansion draft, each existing team was allowed to protect a certain number of their players from being selected, thus giving them the power to retain their 'Star' players. In the 80's expansion for example, the existing teams were each permitted to protect eight players from their roster. Additionally, and this is a crucial point, the new 'expansion' teams had access to high draft picks during the next draft pick depending on their win %! These measures were all put in place to ensure the even spread of talent. Where is the evidence of the league being 'watered down'?! Since his latest attack on MJ and the 80's/90's era, a lot of people are posing this question to JJ, including Udonis Haslem live on ESPN... What about the G League and it's significant impact on the current NBA roster? Over 50% of current NBA players have G League experience and a significant number of current players are signed to two-way contracts. Does that mean that the current NBA is 'watered down'? I would be very interested to hear Redick's response to that question. Any objective and rational person can identify a pattern here... Lebron suffers defeat and like clockwork, along comes a Klutch Sports 'Plant' pushing the next ridiculous MJ narrative, void of any substance... "But...but...but...Jordan played in a watered down league." Klutch are running out of Jordan narratives, each one crumbling quicker than the last! They are becoming so desperate, they are having to recycle old narratives! Remember when JJ stated on live TV a few years back that MJ was being guarded by 'plumbers and firemen'? The only card they have left is to continue trying to diminish Jordan's competition. That's it! That's all they have, now that the Longevity card has failed. It's truly disturbing that Klutch Sports will stop at nothing in their absurd attempts to elevate James to Jordan's level, even if that means having to diminish an entire Era of basketball. Say what you want about MJ but he NEVER used Nike or the Air Jordan brand to tear down another player or to discredit another Era. He respected the legends that came before him and allowed his Resume and his game on the court to cement his legacy.

Both Redick and Perkins routiniely discredit MJ to promote LeBron James because they know LeBron game and career is just not on MJ's level. For example - MJ was the best FINISHER of all time and its not even close - and that is well known. You just have to watch NBA videos on RU-vid and its obvious MJ is the best finisher of all time. But Redick claimed during the Clippers-Mavs game that IT IS WELL KNOWN that Kyrie Irving is the best finisher ever. Perkins claims Kevin Durant is the best scorer of all time when it is obvious MJ is the best scorer of all time - just look at the numbers, take into account the eras they each played in, and watch how they each played the game.

The Win Average of the bottom 5 teams in the league during Jordan's Era was 22 wins... The Win Average of the bottom 5 teams in the league during Lebron's Era is 22 wins... Redick provided ZERO statistics or any evidence whatsoever to back up his ridiculous claim. 6 teams were added over a period of TWO DECADES (4 in the 80's and 2 in the 90's). It's interesting that he never brought up the Orlando Magic given that he was talking to SHAQ! The Orlando Magic were one of the 6 'expansion' teams, (added in 1989) and they became an incredible team within only a few years of their addition to the league, drafting Shaq in 1992 and one year later they acquired Penny Hardaway! This 'expansion team' knocked the Bulls out of the Playoffs in 1995! The Miami Heat was another one of these 6 expansion teams, added in 1988. Glen Rice was drafted to the Heat in 1989 and though they initially endured a few seasons of mediocrity, Pat Riley's arrival as the new head coach in 1995 ushered in the Tim Hardaway and Alonzo Mourning era. In an NBA expansion draft, the new NBA teams were allowed to acquire players from previously established teams in the league. Not all players on a given team were available during an expansion draft though, each existing team was allowed to protect a certain number of their players from being selected, thus giving them the power to retain their 'Star' players. In the 80's expansion for example, the existing teams were permitted to protect eight players from their roster. Additionally, and this is a crucial point, these new teams were given access to high draft picks during the next draft pick depending on their win %! These measures were put in place to ensure an even spread of talent. Where is the evidence of the league being 'watered down'?!

Who cares about 5 or so wins in the regular season? It still doesn't make it watered down it's just an inevitable temporary consequence of expanding. It's actually the opposite, adding those teams and adding those additional draft picks and that added competition for players only increases the depth of the league. It'd be like if I was JJ Reddick's shooting coach, and I told him he needs to start learning off ball shooting, and the first year he shoots worse than normal, am I watering down his shot? No, I'm expanding his shot selection, there's just growing pains.

JJ does realize that when expansion teams come in, or at least during Jordan's time. Expansion teams are only allowed to poach 8-12 rotation players from existing teams. I mean you can’t debate this Lebrons era has been more talented and athletic. That happens with every sport, as training, science, etc. evolves players naturally become better, likewise as the popularity of a sport grows, competition to play in that league increases significantly. MJ had the greatest impact on the growth of basketball, kids grew up watching MJ wanting to be like Mike. Way more kids played basketball and trained to become a pro because of Mike. So in large part the reason the league is so competitive, the reason the players are so good is because of MJ, he inspired the rising generation of his time to want to become NBA players. "That happens with every sport, as training, science, etc. evolves players naturally become better" Training is worse now, science has regressed, and the players are worse than ever. "likewise as the popularity of a sport grows, competition to play in that league increases significantly" The popularity and competition level have both gone down. "So yeah there’s no debate the Lebron played against tougher opponents" LeBron played against dynasties in the finals, as did MJ, but MJ's final's opponents mostly weren't dynasties. But there's also worse basketball played in today's era, so tougher opponents can absolutely be debated.

Lol that's because anytime anything can point to lebron being better jordans camp shuts it down. It pains them to admit it's way harder to win in the last 20 years vs previous eras. That's why there are no dynasties besides GS. In previous eras the same teams kept winning lol. Most teams who won won multiple titles. People are so glaze jordan happy they lose sense

@@johncarloflorentinoexpansion is a huge deal. Imagine every nba team losing a starter and their 6th man. It’d be so much easier for top heavy teams to win. Also, imagine no international players like Jokic, Luka and Giannis playing. It’d be easier to win against lesser competition. Doesn’t take away from MJ’s greatness. He could only beat who was in front of him post-expansion.

Don't worry, I'll do it for him with nothing but facts. An additional 90 players were added when rosters went from 12 to 15. THEN ANOTHER 90 added with 3 two-way contracts per team. That completely nullifies JJ's arguments. Not to mention the G-League having almost 30 teams with players that can be called up at any time. The expansion from 12 to 15 alone nullifies his arguments, the two-way contracts confirm that the league is even more watered down today.

How can 90 players start on 6 new teams? What yall wont talk about is the fact that the only new players added to those expansion teams were rookies the vast majority of the time. The every team protected 8 of their 12 players on the roster, everybody else was up for grabs in the expansion draft. Yall act like they found 90 new guys off the street and said "hey you're tall, wanna play in the NBA"? The unwarranted hate for the history of the game is bogus af. But yall going to learn. Wait until people are telling you Harden, Paul, and Westbrook were scrubs.

What makes jj statement. Flaw. Is the fact that when Jordan played, the east was the toughest conference. When LeBron played the east was the weakest conference. And he still stacked his teams. To try and win And now that he went to the west. He's been having problems. But when Jordan played the centers, and the power forwards were paid to keep everyone out of the paint and grab rebounds. Which made the game more physical. But in today's game. The big men, are more athletic, and are better shooters. Which spreads the floor and leaves the paint wide open. But in Jordans day when the big men, which most were 7footers. Still couldn't stop him from scoring. And then Jordan has never been accused of taking peds,taking games off. Quitting own his team, or flopping. That's why Jordan is the goat

You def not wrong about the jj hate lol. I just feel like the regular season being “watered down” is irrelevant considering his opponents in the postseason. JJ made a strong point when bringing up the new teams and players but MJ could have gone 300-0 to these teams and it would not have mattered if he couldn’t beat the teams contending for a chip. Which he did beat. Just because the blazers and the pistons were god awful this year doesn’t mean the league was watered down.

MJ is my goat but JJ is absolutely right. Jordan had to fight hard to win the first three peak but the league was much weaker after he came back from his "retirement".
