What JJ describes at the end is exactly what happened to me when I watched his Marcus Smart and PJ Tucker interviews. It wasn't as if I disliked these guys before, just had never seen them in a long-form interview. Came away really liking both.

Smart move. He’s the best out there and only getting better.

Owning your work is so important for any creator in an media facet because not only do you benefit from your products directly but you can also leverage your audience later on

Reading the comments: I don't get the Bill Simmons hate. He still speaks highly of JJ and says that its a really good Podcast. JJ will be successful, as will Bill. Eventually look for them to do a Home and Home like Simmons does with Zach Lowe.

The problem isn't JJ or Bill Simmons, the problem is it sets a precedent that all talent can own their socials and their names. If you give up the IP, you basically only exist to grow giant self-owned brands that can then go independent without you after they reach a certain point. The Ringer and Barstool have a lot of top podcasts in different fields, if they say they own the IP, we just split profits, you do everything you can to make these people as successful as possible. Free promotion on all your other shows, pay them a salary, give them a producer, the best equipment, and a talent booker, you're setting them up for success, you're planting the seeds. And as they grow and make their own voice and fan base off your foundation you built for them, it turns into this weird give and take of well what can you do for me now? Should media companies just be talent incubators where they invest all this money into you just so you can leave and become independent off the foundation they gave you? Or should they be able to profit off the platform and foundation they gave the talent. That's the weird world we're in now where talent can thrive on their own, be their own talent bookers, have their own ad sales teams, and do it all on their own. But most people (unlike JJ) can't start that way. They need the time to build their voice and do so in an environment that let's them build safely.

Everyone says they want to own their own IP, but unless THEY can generate the following themselves then the company they are associated with from a brand perspective usually drives the metrics. Not everyone is a call her daddy or a Bill Simmons podcast. It took Bill 15 yrs before he owned his podcast. It took, Cowherd over 20 yrs to own his.

JJ is the best in the bizz. I am really happy he started loading to youtube so I can catch his podcast.

It’s 2024 and compare these guys’ trajectories. JJ is going far as hell. Even if he gets fired from the lakers that podcast is just going to be even bigger.

Owning your IP is a long term play. When you've made $115Mill in your career (on court), you can afford to delay up front money and hold on to your IP for control/licensing rights etc. I always think players should do this--but I understand why a company like The Ringer wouldn't let you own your IP. What's in it for them? These companies should Identify talent and partner with them long term (i.e. First 2 years WE own the IP. Then we give up the IP but you cut us in on earnings for the next 2 years, then we renegotiate to where you own everything and we get a % of some aspect we add value in). Don't make the relationship adversarial--Find ways to be better partners if possible, and get money together. I read somewhere that Barstool interestingly enough allowed Call Her Daddy to walk to Spotify, and they still get a piece of some of the future earnings (Merch I believe). It's a way to create Win/Win scenarios for everyone.

JJ is making the right moves. The podcast business took a new turn after the Joe Rogan deal and I mean it is never good for the authentic content if some people come in and start affecting what is talked about. OK Joe got 100mill "fuck you money" and that is where you make the deal anyway but when You have options then do it like JJ and for us listeners it is the best.

Should have taken the Ringer job. Wouldn’t have needed to supplement your income by joining ESPN or having “hot take debates” with SAS and Perkins. Instead you could go on serious basketball shows, have serious debates, AND promote your podcast, none of which ESPN will allow. That ESPN job is going to steal your soul.
