Bruce Lee was a pioneer in the world of martial arts, and an inspiration to many. As you know, he created the hybrid fighting style of Jeet Kune Do, or JKD which includes techniques from Boxing, Wing Chun, Fencing, and Jujitsu. In this video, Ninja Nate breaks down the basics and 5 ways of attack using SAA (single angular attacks), so you can learn Jeet Kune Do step by step.

It's easy to intercept fists or kicks, when you know what your opponent will do. I've been following JKD lessons. It was learning JKD tecniques and sparring. A real street fight is something else. You'll use anything you got. Bruce was a real street fighter.

The most important part of Jeet Kune Do (which unfortunately wasn't mentioned by Nate) is to "Absorb what is useful, discard what is useless, and add what is specifically your own." It is something that Bruce Lee repeated in his books over and over again. He never meant for people to fight like he did. It would contradict the whole philosophy of finding yourself and your style. I've been studying JKD for a while now, but I would never in my life want my guard to be that low in a fight. This may have worked for Bruce Lee, but I'm way too slow for that, so I keep my hands at face-level to be able to protect myself more quickly. Also note that the straight lead is meant to be used to catch your opponent off guard, which is why it is important to throw it quickly and without telegraphing it, and is usually followed up by more attacks/a takedown. I get that he tried to show off a technique, but it is always important to mention what you can/should do next. You don't just stand there after a quick punch, and expect your opponent to be impressed as shit. You're meant to finish the fight.
@deadlychip973
@deadlychip973 5 лет назад
So what you're saying is that there fight finishers and should be use to end a fight or prevent more damage?
@sakibomb9393
@sakibomb9393 5 лет назад
So because bruce Lee infisied to finding yourself you decided to stick with being "way to slow" . bout time you work on your speed. Also, Some people build off of basics and master them, if his basics is exactly bruce Lee style, let the man shine. He can mimic the style and surprise you with his own in the mits of the exchange.
@psychodynamicnaturalhistor437

My understanding is that this video is about concepts of attacking. It's just to introduce some methods of closing the distance for that offensive defense concept. He chooses one technique to make the variations easier to understand. We are supposed to internalize the concept and use what works for us and discard what doesn't. In that regard I think Nate accomplished this goal in a very good way as a 10 minute introduction. We can get deeper through training and sparring and testing.

Maybe because is taught over and over again amongst those who have learned it. You typically won't see Jkd used in most street fighting videos mainly because a lot of the people who learned Jkd, like myself, Have also learned to avoid conflict until absolutely necessary. Also, most people can't get their phones out in time for the occasional well timed and precise Jkd knockout resulting from utilization of these same techniques exhibited here and more. Of course, doesn't always happen like that and even people well versed in Jkd may also just have a regular street stance and may get in situations where they cannot properly apply the Jkd form into their actual fight just then. def props to Shane for the outreach to give his viewers further insight into the world of fighting.

A real fight isn't going to be a back and forth exchange like it is in a sport like boxing. The strengths of JKD is the specific targeting of soft spot (ie groin, throat, whatever) and the set up for the take down. These are awesome entries into grappling range imho, where solid judo/BJJ will handle the rest. Super useful for getting in that crucial first strike with speed, efficiency and your own self defense in mind.
@mavericksdcuo2409

Mavericks® DCUO Which is why Judo is, imho, the best street defense. Nobody hits harder than the ground. Nobody. Slam the average joe blow hard onto concrete and the fight ends right there. And after some Judo it is shocking how easy it is to plant someone on the ground. Judo doesn't close distance well though, that is where I find stuff like this can be handy. Understanding the centerline and how to protect your balance. I used similar centerline deflection with Judo to sit people down at the drug store I used to work at. 99% of people have no clue how to defend a decisive ashi waza.
@mavericksdcuo2409
@mavericksdcuo2409 8 лет назад
+bobbypaycheque well listen judo is great and all but it became a sport more than it is a martial art. mma is modern type of MARTIAL ART and it takes most of the easiest and effectiveness techniques from every martial art such as judo. but it does it with no gi
@bobbypaycheque
@bobbypaycheque 8 лет назад
Mavericks® DCUO You call out Judo for being a sport but then cite MMA as a martial art? The only equipment we wear in Judo is... well... clothes. You know, clothes? The stuff 99.9% of people you meet in the street are wearing? Yeah, haven't seen a fight between two guys only wearing boxer briefs. In MMA not only are you wearing a cup and mouth guard (aside from having a LONG list of illegal moves), you have paddded gloves on your hands. Fact is those MMA guys can't throw heavy straights without tape supporting the small joints of the wrist and hand and ample padding. The other fact is that Judo has represented extremely well in MMA and Judo throws and trips, as well as the locks, work regardless of gi or no gi. Judo just doesn't see the point in getting serious injury at the competition level. Competition is for getting better at judo, not getting seriously injured while practicing. All encounters I've seen (a lot) and the few I've been in all go to grappling range fast. Judo was good enough for William Fairbairn (was accepted at Kodokan Judo University in Tokyo in 1918) when he created the first standardized modern military H2H combat system which was utilized heavily in British police units and WWII. MMA doesn't train you to fight without extensive protective equipment nor does it train you to stay off the ground. BJJ is not suitable for street defense (well written article by French BJJ black belt and champion Florent Luccioni explains in greater depth) and while the striking is good, the excellent head movement of strict boxing is often missing. MMA has less street application than Judo. Again, nobody hits harder than the ground. Accelerating at speed onto concrete never did anyone any good, nor did immediately thereafter getting an arm broken in three places. Judo gets it done without presenting the possibility of the practitioners own techniques hurting his best weapons, his hands, unlike boxing without gloves.

Except real fights are back and forth. The fact that you brought up boxing shows that something offended you. Just like JKD boxing focuses on the weak spots too. Except that with boxing you'll have superior footwork and punching power with greater precision. I rather have bjj/judo in my tool box if I were a pure boxer than a pure JKD guy. The punches that Nate were throwing were fast but they didn't seem strong enough for KO or knockdown.

MMA? LMAO do me a favour. Anyone who practices the real Bruce Lee pure Jeet Kune Do (notice your spelling mistake) would destroy you in seconds. The MMA stance (If you could call it a stance because in reality it isn't) is so wide open, it would be exploited in seconds. Jeet kune do is a philosophy and a way of life. One draw back of the art is, if you want to defend yourself in a street fight it takes a couple of years learning, unlike some other forms of martial arts which are more street fighting based.

People are critiquing it because they don't understand 2 key elements of JKF. A. Jeet kune do is more a mentality then a style. Use what's helpful from all martial arts, discard what's not. Simply and refine what works best for you. It's not as rigid as the guy in this video makes it out to be. 2. JKD is a self defense martial art, you don't see it in the octagon because throat punches are illegal. All the guys saying "you better knock him out with that little punch otherwise your running right in to a left hook". The aim of jkd is to maim, disable, and kill. Not ko. It's not tournament mma

These keyboard UFC fighters are cringey as hell. You know how people hate crossfitters, vegans, people who vape, etc. because people who do that stuff talk about it all the time and think they're better than you for doing it? I put MMA practitioners in that category.

Hundreds and thousands of guys seem to focus only on the skills of JKD when demonstrating those from Bruce Lee's three booklets on JKD, whereas his lightning-like speed & thunder-like power are often overlooked. Just compare the video clips of his demonstration decades ago with those of the others' on RU-vid! IMHO, JKD is tailored-made for Bruce Lee himself. The use of lead punch and lead kick ( 前鋒手、前鋒腳) can best explain the uniqueness of JKD, and exposes its inherent weakness with the absence of the triple combination of skill, speed and power. Ninja Nate surely can kick my ass. He could have displayed the very basics of JKD in a better manner if he got a better partner. But sparring with a quality fighter, without restraint of using JKD only, may be a different story for him !
@SonicPAJ
@SonicPAJ 7 лет назад
But isn't the point of JKD to find what works best for you anyways?
@nuclearwaste2062
@nuclearwaste2062 7 лет назад
exactly. everybody has their own interpretation of JKD.
@HDsharp
@HDsharp 6 лет назад
And almost everyone has got the JKD punching technique all wrong, people dont know not many people have figured out bruce lee's punching technique, despite ninja man here looking quick but compare to bruce he is a snail. Anyone who remotely can get bruce's technique right can surely to a degree be just as fast, but they're not barring a few.

@benjaminwoodman
@benjaminwoodman 4 года назад
most definitely! Just remember what JKD (martial arts in this video) method is all about: Extract the useful, discard the rest, and repeat on every fighting style you wish to learn and combine them all to make your JDK.

Some things from WC are actually pretty useful. I have come to find that paksao plus backfist is easy to pull off on people who turtle, caosao plus body punch or head control is effective vs body shots, lopsao and first chisao section entry are useful to get enemy's back. Also try chigerk when clinching/looking for a takedown and zoning from wooden dummy form plus good footwork can make you evade a good puncher 😉

I know I'm a year late, but I'll say this anyways: You can, but you have to modify it A LOT! My experience from sparring told me these two things about Wing Chun vs MMA: 1) Only use trapping for offense (entering/creating an opening), NEVER as a block! In Wing Chun you're taught you can block, then trap and attack, but if you do this against an MMA fighter, they'll close the distance and move into clinching range before you can trap. So only use trapping as an offensive tool! 2) Chain punches are not that powerful, but they're phenomenal at making your opponent flinch, similar to a jab, which can be used at a great advantage. The guy you're fighting WILL panic and move back if you start rapid fire punching, however don't chase him. Otherwise he will again just close the distance and move in for a clinch or a takedown.

Love what he said bout mind being like water at the beginning of the video. I think to much all the time which is probably why I have so much anxiety. It concerns my parents. I just recently got back into meditating and I hope it will help. I don't practice jeet kune do but I am a karate practitioner. Anxiety seems to hold me back from my training but considering my journey in karate is just starting I have faith I'll overcome it

Everyone always questions like u are a bunch of keyboard black belts. It's a demonstration and no matter what martial art u know u can kick someone's ass if u know what u are doing. Videos like this should inspire u to take from it not to critique it because if u wanna be a critic make a video get into an actual street fight and show everyone how it's done. No matter what u train mma, karate, kung fu, combative etc...you'll never be truly prepared for a fight in which a person really wants to hurt or even kill you and even if he or she has friends.
