Christina says in this interview that she wanted to view her mother's body because she loved her and wanted to say goodbye to her. In her interview with Larry King, she says she wanted to view her body to make sure she was dead.
When she answered the question in this interview, her answer didn't come across as genuine. Didn't she start with, ' oh, I don't know, something like.......' One would remember something like that word for word. And it wasn't even long ago!
The woman's honesty is questionable. I think it was a little of both. And perhaps she had to say she loved her in that particular venue to make herself look more "credible." her entire tone sounds like she is a little dishonest and she needs to crowd to see her a "a good person."
I was so impressed by Joan Crawford's performance in Mildred Pierce, I wanted to learn more about her.I learnt Joan did have problems but all of the claims in the book have been proven to be false.
Great footage. As always, something that is only shown on your channel! Keep up the great work. I love how this is almost seperate from almost all other interviews Christina has done. This was when the feelings were still very raw apparently, still young and hasn't mastered hiding her true feelings leaking out through body language etc., and also the prettiest i think Christina ever looked as an adult!
Fast forward and go check out the Larry king interview with Christina Crawford. She’s asked similar questions and answers a bit different - specially the question about Christina being allowed to see Joanne’s casket. In the Larry king interview she says that she never loved her mother and she wanted to make sure she was dead. In this interview she says she loved Joanne.
Christina is just a pathological liar. On King, she stated that Al Steele died after falling down the stairs. Nope. Heart attack. She's a cold, calculating liar.
I don't think Mike Douglas was hard on Christina Crawford at all. He was very professional and civil given his supposed distain of Christina Crawford's book.
This book turned Hollywood upside down especially the fans. What made it worse, is that Christina had a very cold and calculated disposition that turned a lot of people off. There are definitely stories that have been told about Crawford's issues but it's still debated today how much was true. Mike Douglas and the guests were very respectful and classy. Before my time but I love watching the interviews on youtube. They don't make shows like this anymore.
When Douglas asked her if she was going to share the money from book sales and from the movie with her brother Christopher, you can tell by her initial reaction to the question that the answer is a flat out NO.
@@JSolo-ko9eh That's the word! Rage, venom, envy, hatred = Cristina. Her brother had serious psychological problems, Joan (and her husband) got him professional help. They did so much for those kids...look up Cristina and what she did to the Thunderbird they got for her.
So interesting to both read Mike Douglas' comments and watch this interview. The guests Gavin & Patty MacLeod (sic) and Patrick McNee (sic) of "The Avengers" showed both concern and Ms. Crawford as an actress. 💔📺 I miss his show. RIP Mike Douglas, Patrick McNee and Joan Crawford.
The bad thing is people remember the movie and not the book. The movie was much more extreme than the book. Even Christina has said that. It's sad that this is what Crawford's legacy is after she worked hard her entire life pulling herself out of poverty.
im so thankful for this marvelous youtube channel. its thorough and marvelous. i know i speak for many in thanking you for preserving the REAL Joan Crawford.
I watched every single interview and read all the books she wrote. I watched the movie and NOW she loved Joan? She says she didn't all those other times.
I think Christina was trying to get revenge on her mother for not leaving her any money in her will. So she did the next best thing and ended up getting what she was after in the end.💰
In October 1965, she appeared in Neil Simon's Barefoot in the Park, with Myrna Loy, a friend of her mother, before being fired. She was considered a capable actress, but difficult to work with in the industry, described as 'stubborn' by Loy who stated in her autobiography Becoming and Unbecoming that "We didn't have any problems in Barefoot in the Park until she appeared. "The idea of Joan's daughter playing the role delighted me until I discovered how recalcitrant this child was...I've never known anyone like her, ever. Her stubbornness is really unbelievable. She would not do a single thing anyone told her to do."
I believe Loy, and I believe this story! To this day, people who encounter Christina talk about how entitled she is, demanding, acting like a Hollywood A-list Prima Dona, etc. Her arrogance and stubbornness probably was infuriating, especially to someone who DID the work and SUCCEEDED the hard way.
@Abby H Absolutely. She was given a privilaged life and from what others have said was a spoiled brat and vile tantrum chucker. I find it surprising that bits of the wallpaper just fell off. If she cut up the yellow dress to shreds and in pieces, how could it be put back together to wear???🤔🤯
Yes. And Myrna Loy was very good friends with Joan. She was one of the few who went publicly and defended Joan in the open. For someone like Myrna who was known for being kind and peaceful, you have to be really bad to piss her off. Which Christina was.
In another interview...I think it was with Oprah, she said she wanted to see Joan in the coffin to make sure she was dead...quite different from what she said in this interview. Interesting indeed...she got paid $500,000.00 for the rights by the producer of the movie. When asked if she did it for revenge, the look in her face is again “interesting “....I think that Joan probably wasn’t a perfect “mother” but I also think Christine was probably a handful as a child. The way she describes pulling wallpaper off of the wall...she gives me the creeps, honestly.
I've seen the movie countless times but have not read the book so I don't know how it compares, but the one thing I notice is that the Mommie Dearest Joan is an amalgam of several Joan Crawford roles, perhaps how Christina perceived her mother to be at home. I don't know the truth about what went in, but it's my opinion this was done purely out of revenge.
Yeah. You combine Harriet Craig, Queen Bee and add a bit of child abuse while reversing the mother-daughter dynamic in Mildred Pierce from abusive child and kind mom to kind child and abusive mom, you get Mommie Dearest.
I have read the book and seen the film THE only thing i will say is that no one has come forward ( yes staff were fired) to verify Christina and Christopher's account..perhaps a lot dead..but as Joan is dead why did no stars come forward to verify? surely some people must have witnessed abuse?...I am not saying I don't believe it at all..but seems odd that there are no witnesses...
Myrna Loy costarred with Christina in a revival of “Barefoot in the Park,” and said that she was one of the most unpleasant, recalcitrant, uncooperative actresses she’d ever worked with. Loy finally went to the producers of the play and got her fired from the production.
In the Larry King interview she acts as if Joan had nothing to leave to her loved ones, or very little making it look as if she couldn't possibly have written the book for revenge I mean why would she if Joan had nothing to leave? She says here that she visited the Funeral Home because she loved her mother but told Larry King she didn't love her mother. She's confused
And every several years after the release of Mommie Dearest, she did a whole "new" edition with even more "dirt" (or slag, sludge or whatever) to generate more sales. The fact that she waited until Joan was dead before publishing it even made Bette Davis seethe saying that "Miss Crawford did NOT deserve that!" .. before her own daughter doing a "Christina' on her as well.
The abused child in me wants to believe the abuse she endured as a child... I can’t shake the feeling that something is off here... somethings not said... as if there are half truths or embellishments. Idk.
Agreed. Half truths and embellishments. Their issues were well published when Joan Crawford was alive (in 1961 I think) and apparently continued. Joan Crawford said later that she felt, perhaps, she'd been a little too rigid with the first two kids, but certainly never the sadistic madness Christina came up with.
Faye Dunaway stated that she felt the book was overdone and exploitative. Simply made to make money off of such exploitation. Such books have been written by Bette Davis' daughter, and many other movie stars children who made a great deal of money off the books written.
Christina is a real scammer, it's really shameful what she has done to her mother. What she has done is disgusting, a great stain that she will carry on her conscience for life. You are saying that Faye Dunaway stated that she felt the book was “overdone and exploitative”, that it was simply made to make money off of such exploitation. Of course, this sounds very ironic, since she has earned a lot of money for having participated in the movie, which I consider so embarrassing and shameful of her. This goes out to all those who have participated in this shameful mess, shame on all of them.
This is sickening. She is so ingenious. Where is her proof of anything? What did come to light was maids and actors coming forward to say she was a horrid brat.
I finally read this book after watching the movie hundreds of times. I see a lot of rage from her from not getting the material things and money from her mother. She seems to blame her Mother for every problem in her own life even as an adult. I also endured a childhood with alcoholics and it is traumatic but at some point at around age 19 I knew I had to move on from this and put it behind me.
"Is the book a form of revenge?" ......"no" Of course the book was revenge. She has spent her entire adult life getting even with her mother. It's her entire purpose in life, even into old age.
She still hasn't left it. Recently she started a podcast. Being so far up your abuser's ass to talk nonstop about it for 4 and a half decades, woman is clearly a liar.
Christina Crawford later claimed she only contested Joan Crawford’s will for her brother’s financial benefit. However, here are some FACTS regarding Christina’s TRUE interest in her brother’s financial well-being: Of the $55,000 estate settlement, Christina claims to have given all of it to her brother. This is FALSE. More than HALF of the $55,000 was first paid to Christina’s attorney, who was representing her interest in the publication of her book “Mommie Dearest.” Therefore, LESS than half of the funds were actual given to Christopher. The LARGER bulk was paid to Christina’s attorney for HER benefit. Christina Crawford’s “Mommie Dearest” was a best-selling book. From the MILLIONS of dollars she made in proceeds from the book's sells, she gave her brother, Christopher, only $10,000 for his rights. Christina sold the film rights for $280,000 (according to Christina). Other sources cite the sell of the film rights for $500,000. From this sell, Christina gave her brother NOTHING. **Credit to ChristinaCrawfordLied facebook**
I just wish that someone at the time had been doing an investigative folloup to the book and call out Christina on certain things. For example how about having Joan's caregiver Darinka Papich carefully hidden in the audience of the Phil Donahue show circa 1978. This occasion when Phil reads aloud Christina's book passage about Joan's last words (the oh so dramatic and false Damn it. Don't you dare ask God to help me!) But then let's have Darinka Papich be chosen from the audience and share with everyone that what Christina wrote was false. Let us see how Christina would've wormed her way out of that.
Christina needs to be tried in court. In the sworn deposition, she clearly says things that contradict the book. So if Mommie Dearest is the truth, she lied under oath. If the deposition is the truth, then she lied to the whole world.
I agree but the majority couldn't be verified since she waited until Joan was dead. She is sneaky, dirty and underhanded. I do not respect that. How can the accused face her accuser if she isn't here
@@preetakumar6593 Bette Davis was there to defend herself. And boy she did... IIRC, although not a Crawford fan, she said she didn't believe most of the things in "Mommie Dearest".
Christina Crawford played Joan Borman Kane on the soap opera The Secret Storm in New York from 1968 until 1969. While Crawford was in the hospital recovering from an emergency surgery in October 1968, Joan asked to "fill in" for Christina. She did so without mentioning it to her daughter, "holding the role" for her for four episodes so that the part would not be recast during her absence. Viewership increased 40% during this replacement time, much to Christina's chagrin.[13] Eventually let go from the series, Crawford insisted it was due to her mother's appearance. The producers, however, said that Joan was gracious, professional and brought huge ratings, and that Christina's character and her storyline had simply run its course.
@@barbaradixon3113 Yes. Very sad when a jealous and rude daughter it seems (from those who have known and spoken about Christina) publishes a salacious, scathing book *after* her mother was dead for money and recognition. The lowest of the low. Not even her siblings back up her story. Why Faye Dunaway chose to ruin her own career by portraying a famous actress who had a reputation for professionalism and had a compassionate nature and dedication to her craft - chose a role which annihilated a woman's entire legacy based on her horrid adopted child's scathing book is beyond me.
The two oldest in my family decided to vilify my Mother, because of her imperfections, but they made 100% worse mistakes in their own lives and both became divorced. They don't see their own children very often, because their own children had difficult lives with them. What goes around comes around is an old saying.
Christina's story changed from interview to interview. She told Larry King why she was left nothing. I believe the 2 younger girls. Revenge is what this was about.
If I recall the story correctly, this took place in Elvis' Bel Air home. Christina was among other guests there and she kept pulling Elvis' cigarette from his mouth. He told her to quit it and to stop being so rude but she continued. Then he called her a bitch and she threw a drink in his face. Elvis then proceeded to throw her ass out of his house (and rightly so!).
@@nutrianirvana6823 Wow! No wonder Christina doesn't write about her "abuse" from Elvis - this time there were witnesses... unlike all the shit she spins that supposedly happened yet no person saw any of it. Not her brother, not a staff member, not even one of her friends.
Whatever cannot be said against a person while they are still alive to defend themselves, should not be said at all after their death. I truly believe in this. Any grievances should be reconciled long before.
In my humble opinion, and I raised three very challenging children and happily married for 32 years, was that this girl was extremely ungrateful, I am never condoning any kind of abuse, but you could have been adopted by much, much worse, don't you read the papers now-a-days. They find kids cemented in walls for 20 years and they still love and will not talk against the parents no matter. Joan is gone, she cannot defend herself. You are talking about a women (Joan) who was raised, by an immigrant, dirt poor, single mother who had to work in a laudris (laundry shop). She would say she could never get the smell of the laundry of body, plus she was probably the first # me too movement. She was a brillant actress, your life could have been alot worse, I was surround by child-hool mental illness my whole life and I decided as an adult I would never let it get the best or control my life -thank God he asnwered my preayerser sorry I had to rush this
Christina only had to live with her mother Joan Crawford for 18 years of her life some of it which Christina has stated was a good childhood, Joan also paid for her college education with room and board. Christina dropped out of college.... Joan also paid for her weddings and gave her cars.... There are many happy pictures with the two as adults. The two daughters would visit Joan in her later years , where was Christina? Joan dies and Christina writes her book, Joan never had the chance to defend herself.... Also Joan knew the book was coming that is why she wrote her out of her will, and rightly so.
I don't know what to believe. If she lied, it was a terrible thing to do to someone of means and luxury that gave the children a good and privileged life. I applaud Joan Crawford for her acting skills and good movies.
40 years later still with her "greatest hits" tour slagging her mother. She hated her mother, but had no problem taking her name. Had she been some farmhands daughter in Idaho.. no one would have read her book.
This. I think that Joan was strict, but I think that Christina exaggerated a LOT of it. I also think that Christina and Christopher had a lot of mental health issues, and Joan wasn’t equipped to handle it, so she was harder on them than she was with the twins.
Joan Crawford’s very closest friend said that as a child Christina refused to obey and would act out constantly. I believe that children should be protected from abuse but I don’t believe a word this woman said. People who knew Christina said she was obsessively jealous of her mother because she was very beautiful and a movie star known around the world. Christina did show signs of emotional problems but Joan gave her everything a Hollywood movie star could give her child. She was thrown lavish birthday parties filled with children to play with and bringing gifts. Christina was noted as saying happily that her mother would invite children and make them play with her. That’s the twisted way she saw things and apparently she wasn’t able to make friends herself. Even Joan’s husband defended Joan saying that she was a loving mother and never witnessed her mistreating the children. She was firm but fair in her discipline. Many believe that Christina was emotionally damaged but not by Joan, she was adopted so no one knows for sure what may have cause her odd behavior. It’s believed that she wrote the book to destroy Joan’s memory out of spite, jealousy and hatred of her famous, starlet mother. Her own siblings say that that’s the way Christina interpreted her childhood but their experiences were happy ones. This smear campaign against Joan was so successful that Betty Davis’ daughter, after Betty’s death, wrote and published a similar book about Betty abusing her but hers didn’t have a huge impact Christina’s book and movie had. Mental illness and jealousy are a potent and dangerous combination for sure.
Joan did her best to raise A her family. Her husband's had play an important part in her person & private life. May I Say her wake & funeral was done In good taste & Formal. She looked Het very best. May her children be Thankful & Bless that they had An Working mother that did and try her Best to raise them. May she rest in peace. Mz Joan Crawford RIP.
Sorry but dont believe her story sure she might had her problems but I think Christina was a unruly child n jealous Because her other two adopted twins said this was all lies
All I can say is this: I don't think that Joan Crawford was exactly the mother of the year, but this sort of thing should also be taken with a grain of salt. It's easy to say things like this about a person after they're dead because when they're dead, they obviously can't fight back. The truth is usually somewhere in the middle.
We will never know. What we do know is Christune is a manipulator and dirty. She knew once her mom was gone there would be nobody to dispute it. Her brother did not receive any royalties what so ever. A big lie from Christine.lting is not beneath her
Such a horrible, spoiled rotten to the core you know what she is. My Mom saw Joan Crawford in person when she and her husband came to our tiny town, and said she was so lovely, not only in looks but in personality, very genuine and sincere.
As far as I can tell, Christina Crawford never forgave her mother Joan Crawford. Some say,"Its too hard to forgive."The truth is,it's harder NOT to! Forgiveness doesn't mean that saying what happened was ok.
I really think she really exaggerated. I am sure that Joan was not mothmother of the year, but not like this. Even Bette Davis who didn't like Joan didn't believe that story.
Ask her about the time when she was at Graceland and she got cute and Elvis grabbed her by the hair, dragged her across the coffee table and told his boy to take her home. Loveboat dude seemed sincere.
At the end of the day history will remember Joan Crawford as a beautiful talent....a real star of old Hollywood.....and Christina? A bitter, spoiled frump.
She is full of lies. I watched her Lary King interview first. The lies are much fresher here, with time she was able to cement them which is what had me interested in her story to begin with. What a sad woman. An insult in fact to those that have acually suffer REAL abuse
Alot of people had said she made up the whole thing because her mom didn't leave anything to her or her brother in her mother's will she didn't get one dime of the inheritance at all,and that is because her and her brother were adopted.apparently she was an exstremely spoiled child but I wasn't there so I wouldn't know the facts it's just what I heard that she was misgruntled and angery that she wasn't in the will and was left with nothing. But who knows.nobody knows the real truth.
I don't know what is true and not, but seems that the other siblings have shot holes in Christina's account, the vast majority of Joan's peers say they never observed anything that would resemble what Christina describes, and it's hard not to wonder if this was driven by a sense of revenge for being left out of Joan's will. If what she says is true, then that is truly awful, and I'm glad she exposed an abuser. But from what I've seen so far, her account seems dubious at best.
At least Christina acquired something from her adopted mother. Listen to footage of Joan speaking and hear that Christina has her mothers style. Very contrived, perfect diction; robotic. Yes I believe if Christina had been added to the will; there wouldn't have been a book. And after all Christina was raised by one of the best Actress' in Hollywood.
She hadn't seen her mom in years, not as she was dying of cancer and that's why she wasn't in the will. Her not being in the will is why Mommy Dearest happened. Don't beleive her.
She did this out of contempt and to gain money because her mother left her none. Joan's other children, friends, staff have all denied that these things happened and the few things she referred to in her book that remotely happened, didnt happen in any way that she made it out to be. And the son sleepwalked so he was harnessed. Things often look different when you're a kid than what it really is, but she did this purely to smear her mother.
Mike, "Is the book a form of revenge?", Christina, "Nope". Yeah, right. Patrick in telling that little tid bit is saying, "Christina, I don't believe a word your saying". Mike, "Why did you go and view your mother's body after she died?". "Because I loved her and wanted to say goodbye." Interesting in later interview all she said was, she wanted to see visual proof that her mother was dead. And yes, she would be cynical, if this is true. I went through abuse as a child, by family members, and you can either come out of it angry and cynical, or choose to heal. I choose the later. I can't decide if she is being truthful.
