Retired Army infantry here. We joked with each other, fellow grunts, constantly and the only thing that was completely off-limits was someones minor children. EVERYTHING else was fair game. Our mentality was, if you can't handle a joke, may be you should find a different MOS.
A good mentality to have. The way I see it, most things people say should not get the "offensive" flag. They are either joking, wrong, or right. If they're joking, that's great and you can shoot back. If they are wrong, then that's a time for clearing up misconceptions. If they are right, then that hurts. But like Jocko said about his memory of hanging out with his elder friend, the critical joke made at his expense taught him a life lesson. Being offended is a choice, so we should make sure it's something worth being offended by. Thank you for your service, Cat Wrangler.
i've recently discovered i do this with my wife. she struggles with time. punctuality. etc. and apparently 14 years of marriage she's used to my "digs" about it. but that means i've been taking digs at my wife so much that she's accustomed to me being rude to her about this kind of stuff. it was an eye opener and i'm very disappointed in myself. to have made so many comments over the years about this stuff that she's used to me being mean about it is shameful. i need to treat her better and speak better to and about her.
Isn’t she being ruder by consistently being late and wasting yours, and others time? It’s not very hard to manage your time properly and show up when you say you will. Not saying that does or does not justify your own rudeness in response. Just interesting that in your comment, it seems like you view yourself as the only one who should change. It’s nice you want to be a nicer and more positive force in the relationship than you currently are. It just seems like she should also be taking ownership, and responsibility too. You pointing out her tardiness might hurt her, I imagine it also hurts you when she doesn’t show up on time.
@@Nebulaoblivion If her poor time management upsets OP (understandable!), then the right thing to do is to sit her down, have a serious conversation about it and work together to find solutions that may help her. You know, like two adults in a healthy, loving relationship. It sounds like she's disorganized/scattered, not maliciously wasting her husband's time just for the hell of it. Making passive-aggressive digs does nothing to address the problem and isn't a very nice way to treat someone you care about. If I was struggling with something, being put down by my spouse would undermine my confidence and also make me feel alienated from them. Not a productive combo.
Yeah. You do this stuff primarily with people you like and it serves several purposes like blowing off steam, decompressing and building camaraderie. Most people who work in tight groups for periods of time do this. It can be like a family too where if an “outsider” tries this without being accepted it doesn’t work. If you can take a joke, show humility and then “return fire” with guys you have to trust and depend on it cements a tight relationship. Toss in the dark humor you need to get through it together and it can be hard for people who don’t experience this to “get it”. You can see the difference, as Jocko was saying, when this stuff turns malicious for whatever reason. I can honestly see a group of guys doing this same stuff 50,000 years ago
More like a bunch of nervous laughter while simultaneously cutting him off a dozen times while Echo is trying to speak about a time he was embarrassed in front of a group of people by one of Jockos "moods."
The first example I think is more accurately described as an instance of (mild) unprofessionalism, rather than insult or harassment. It was messing around within a professional environment...distracting from the instructing of students who's invested time and money.
Yes, I would rather see the technique and the demonstration finished, so that I can start drilling it myself, than waiting in a circle watching while Jocko and Echo struggle unnecessarily on the floor.
@@mat-kalin4866 the vid literally said that it's a demonstration of the technique and the tap is part of it. Nothing fake about it. Land the technique as shown and most people would tap, Jocko's gorilla neck notwithstanding. Dealing with resistance is another issue altogether. White belts would want to learn that technique to drill, not learn how to guillotine Jocko. Place any other guy in that position, and they'd tap at the first sign of pressure. The thing about going too far is probably about embarrassing Echo in front of students and possibly undermining Echo's authority as a black belt/instructor. White belts in the gym these guys go to are most likely savages who are vicious at any signs of weakness.
You know how you make a long road trip go by fast? Listen to Jocko's podcasts. You might even drive to the wrong place cuz you forgot why you were driving, where you were going!
My Prayers for Your Dad began Just Now..My Spirit & Heart Are with You..Your Dad & Family.. God Bless..God's Speed.... Stay Frosty Brother 5:5 Wheels Up.... 🚁🐕 🇺🇲🦅🇺🇲❤️
But isn't it kinda irritating if a friend does this to you in a demonstration? You're supposed to show the move and maybe you can mess around in practice or drilling
Guillotine story seems to me like a clear example of Jocko's ego getting in the way of the overall mission, to demonstrate the move. Its not about if you can defend the move, or if youre hard to guillotine, the commanders intent is to teach the move to the students. By not being a good demonstration partner, and instead deciding to show off your prowess, you undermined the mission.
What’s up Jocko, I have the podcast but prefer the RU-vid channel. However, once you guys cut out the good stuff, how do I find this exact video on the podcast? Do they have the same title?
Insecurity drives people to find other people's buttons and push them then laugh about it. It also drives them to excel in difficult pursuits to try to show prowess or try to prove superiority.
Damn...these clips are priceless life advice. The Jocko podcast was like this literally almost every episode. It's a pity that you have to pay extra for this content now.
It’s good to learn that you and your relationships in life can survive a harsh joke. It suggests that there might be other painful experiences that you can endure and survive, which encourages you to be less fearful about encountering unpleasant circumstances. And since you most definitely will, that’s a good thing.
@Whatsapp₊₁₆₀₅₂₉₁₅₀₉₀ . It's 2022. There's no need for such foreplay. Can we just get to the point where you ask for my banking information, SSN, drain my accounts, and steal my identity? .
every person goes his last way alone and every person stands at the end of his journey before the god he himself believes in..every person gets back what he gave and every person must give back what he took.!! my GOD loves me UNCONDITIONALLY!!!
No good martial artist taps out when someone who is demonstrating doesn't have the technique, just to make them look good. Nobody improves that way. But trying to actively counter a demonstrated technique in a teaching scenario is a dick move, unless that's part of the level of expected fight for the demonstration of the technique. It might be subtle, but if you train you know. Of course if you ask Jocko to be your uke, you get what you deserve.
Never too far. People need to harden up. If it's a buddy you train with, work with and have a real relationship, send'em. Keeps you abd your buddies mentally armoured.
