@ , don't take anything personally. Nothing others do is because of you. What others say and do is a projection of their own reality, their own dream. When you are immune to the opinions and actions of others, you won't be the victim of needless suffering. Don't play into their negativity. Don't take that on. Most judgemental people take pride in tearing other people down in an attempt to feel better about themselves. But don't let them drag you down with them. You have to surround yourself with people who love you and want the best for you. Having an attitude of gratitude is a little thing that makes a big difference and helps make since of our past, brings peace for today, and creates a vision for tomorrow. I know I made alot of mistakes, but they, in turn were my life lessons. If you want others to be happy, practice compassion. If you want to be happy, practice compassion ❤.

Pushing 5 months sober. I was doing through handles (1.75l) DAILY for 5 or 6 months. My brother had died in September, from covid complications exacerbated by a fatty liver from alcohol abuse. He was only 29 and a successful ER tech and on his way to medical school to become cardiac surgeon. It's very worth it. I couldn't imagine going without alcohol. My body alone was so reliant that I needed 4 to 6 shots every few hours of whisky, or 128 proof moonshine just to function. Otherwise the withdrawals started and I felt like I was going to die. Even when mentally miserable, I just couldn't quit. I wouldn't wish those withdrawals on anyone, 4 hours without booze and I couldn't even get up to piss or sleep well. Sought treatment before Christmas, relapsed twice and finally kicked it in late January. Toom three detox stays but I was fortunate to have a supportive groups of friends and parents. Like Steve-O has said, it's like dipping your toes in a pool and thinking I can never go in there, it's too cold. Once you dive in, you realize it's not bad. I still smoke cigs and take kratom for energy, along with klonopin for anxiety when needed but...the point is. Even when your life gets flipped upside down, you're in immense physical and emotional pain, you can face the reality sober. You're missing out more by being shitfaced all the time and numb than you are drunk, moody, forgetful, and non functioning. If you're using a substance to cope, you'll realize it's not coping, it's just pushing your problems away. It feels better to confront them with a clear mind and good order of health. And you can and will handle it. Don't be ashamed to ask for help, or let a relapse discourage you. Sometimes you gotta swing and miss a few times until you ginally square up and hit a homer run at rhe plate. I lost a solid half year of my life that I cannot really remember and could have died from my abuse of alcohol, and it became apparent that's no way to grieve or honor my brother by dying young too from the same devil. Now it's refreshing to go down to the corner store for gas or some smokes (next thing to quit) and cringe at the alcohol section, or squirm in disgust from commercials or any media where people are drunk. I just needed to get my ass kicked to realize it. If anyone reads this, it's worth it. It might take 20 tries, but commit yourself, confront yourself, and don't be afraid. The grass is truly greener in this case and whatever substance has a hold of you, free yourself from it.

I love the fact that nowadays sobriety is getting more and more of a positive vibe from people. It used to be that a lot of people considered a person getting sober as lame but I’m glad that that’s changed

I'll admit I'm using , but drinking... Haven't drank since 2015.. I hated passing out blackin out then, someone telling me what I did the night before.. then having to call and apologize all the time

@@teabag402 What do you consider sober? There's a reason I'm asking. I've heard people claim to be sober while they're on Suboxone or Methadone. You are not sober while taking that stuff. In some people it's worse than what they were taking before

@@hanginon1293 that depends. If you are on suboxone or methadone and are a productive member of society and your family considers you sober then I would say you are sober. However, we all know people who miss use maintenance drugs as a way of carrying on using on the side, in that instance you would not be sober

Thank you for your service Sir! I'm right there with you. My third deployment was in 09-10. I was active duty for 9 years from 03-12 as a 19K M1 Abrams tanker. I was allowed to drink openly at home at 16, buy back then none of us (my family and I) knew anything about addiction, so I went in to the army at 18 with a decently built up tolerance already. Fast forward to 2004-05 my first tour... It was very stressful, heavy combat, dangerous deployment, and I think that's when I just became Totally desensitized to the stress and violence, and when I came back I didn't feel like I had PTSD; I didn't start realizing something wasn't right until about two years after I got out (2014ish with the night terrors and panic attacks) actually never had any symptoms my whole enlistment, but I did start drinking more after each tour and I ended up reenlisting and going to Iraq 4 times total. Especially once I turned 21 I drank like a degenerate, but I was functional and did the same as a civilian too.. until I couldn't. I eventually started using speed and heroin and eventually just heroin and drinking and I was extremely dysfunctional and had major symptoms of mental illness.. it took me years to get clean, which was only two years ago, but it's like day and night now. I've been using my GI Bill and I'm almost done with my degree in chemical dependency counseling and I got rated at 100% by the VA, so I don't gotta work anymore. Life is SO MUCH BETTER like you said! Enjoy your retirement sir and thank you again for your service!
