Leon put together a helluva band: Jim Gordon and Jim Keltner on drums, Carl Radle on bass, Don Preston on guitar, Bobby Keys and Jim Horn on saxophones, Chris Stainton (from the Grease Band) and the great vocal ensemble. You can't put together that lineup of names today
Cool man. Thanks for pulling that all together for me. I remember seeing the film in the theatre with ‘4 channel’ sound many, many years ago - and never quite go over it. I bought the album (double I think) and stripped the vinyl down to nothing from overplaying but it I confess that I haven’t heard this in decades - Where the heck have I been? Dunno… Thanks very much!
WOW! I can't imagine how this must have blown your mind. The USA was directly put in conflict from what our parents had designs on. This time period was OUR FIRST UPRISING into a HIGHER POWER
The whole hookup between Leon and Delaney & Bonnie and Eric, George and all the British rockers in '69'-'71 is one of the greatest, most musically fertile eras in rock history, not only for the music, but also for the drama. Delaney & Bonnie & Friends on Tour with Eric Clapton, EC's first solo album, George's All Things Must Pass, Dave Mason's "Alone Together," Mad Dogs, Derek & The Dominos...volumes upon volumes have been written.
Leon's a pretty good guitar player, considering he's the best piano player I've ever heard in my life. That band looked like they had fun every time they played.
@@leomejia5492 That's right! Master Musician. We had no idea what their stories were. Only that the rides they took us on. Changed our vision every time. More & more sense was made open to our parents fixed minds. I SHALL BE RELEASED❤❤
YOU GOT THAT RIGHT. SAW THEM. INSIDE JOE'S MIND. YOU'LL RECOGNIZE ALOT OF HOW TOO'S🎉😂. WHATS COOL IS WE CONTRIBUTED TOO EACH OTHERS SUCCESSES. NO HARM NO FOUL MAN! WE GREW!!!! THAT WAS THE FULL INTENTION. NO RIVALRIES. WE WERE HIGH & HAPPY
RIP Joe Cocker....when I heard the news this is the first thing that went through my head...such a simple line and epic delivery...and I have no one to tell that he passed away...my friends just aren't cool enough
Check out Rod with The Faces covering "Baby I'm Amazed" live just before he went solo in the US---with Ronnie Wood (pre-Stones) and Kenney Jones (pre-Who). The whole show is great.
Joe, he took his Ray Charles influence, and made fantastic music his whole life.. always great, never made a bad record, never mailed it in.. immortal 😂
Damn, NOBODY could be Beatles songs better than The Beatles ... except for Joe Cocker ... THESE were the days, young ones. THESE were the days! Early high school for me. Gotta a time machine? Let's go back! Peace.
You got that right. Early '70 my brother took me to Coliseum to see this concert . Then saw them when the ballerina cam down suspended from rafters proned out. They lowered her. SOOO still it was an immaculate performance! Looking at Joe then the ballerina. Not knowing what was happening next. Coliseum again. Filled with smoke. All of us, all kinds of us, shoulder to shoulder watching watching. Taking the words in. Had major crush on Leon Russell. Man. Could he make those keys dance! Holy Jesus these were God Given Talents right in front of us. Mind bending alterations that opened us up. Transformed our minds. Opened our heads. A new period of life was well in swing! 🎉🎉
What an amazing talent. One of the best cover artists of all time. He made iconic songs like Cry Me a River, Feelin' Alright, The Letter, Just Like a Woman and of course With a Little Help From my Friends at Woodstock is own with his unique style and phrasing. I loved the Mad Dogs and Englishmen album when I was in high school. We will miss you Joe!
..continued ..Leon not only used the venue's sound system, but his own as well. The club where I saw him several times had a big bowl of earplugs for those who wanted them! I wanted to hear every note and nuance. Now when my Tinnitus bothers me, I think of Leon and all the great performances I witnessed!
Leon was the man! Saw him once in Chicago with the Shelter People. We snuck in into the venue and got lucky with some open seats. I believe Freddy King opened but it may have been Albert King. Around 1972 or so.
No problem. Check out Freddie's version of Don Nix's "Going Down" on the "Gettin' Ready" album with Leon on piano. It's a classic and might ring a few bells..!
Joe had just done his great performance at Woodstock with the Grease band with whom he parted ways right after. Problem was Joe had a contract to tour a certain number of dates but he had no band. Leon Russel got word of this and came to the rescue. lining up musicians and singers at the drop of a hat . They started rehearsal and called themselves the Mad Dogs And Englishmen and someone, to our pleasure, decided to film the whole thing. What do you think the chances of that kind of thing happening today? Try nil.........jack
w0w...takes me back to my hippie days 4 sure...feel 40 years younger...now this got me in the mood 4 Janis Joplin....pLaY On u oLd hIpPies...Find more of our Old Songs...This new generation doesn't know what their missing....
Love to see Leon Russell's color-block stitching on the outside--long sleve shirt---with a tank top over it. Way to recycle clothes Leon! God rest yours and Joe's soul. Thanks for blessing us with so much heart-felt music and fashion sense!!! You Gods of Rock!!
I met Joe Cocker twice in 1969 we shared a quart and a joint the first time the 2nd time Joe was trying to clean up his act and we talked for an hour about his time as a teenager and his favourite entertainers he was a nice guy I know some said he could be a nasty piece of work but he never came across that way. Oh I met him because I was bass guitarist for studio sessions good times then life got in the way.
reply to baler johnson Cocker is the man that gave Leon his first commercial success. Joe recorded Delta Lady and that is what helped make leon a household name. They were there for each other. If you read up on Leon, before that he was a session musician that wrote and played some great songs for other bands, but he was little known then. Delta Lady by Joe brought them both fame. just sayin'
Leon was and still is the MAN...I love his music and his talent...I realize that he is aging like ALL of us but he is still an amazing musician and writer..in my humble opinion.....!!!!!!! EVEN Elton John realized that................
Palace Theater , Peoria , I l. on the big screen . Mad Dogs and Englishmen . Joe , Leon , and all the rest took us on a trip . What a beautiful Soul ! Long live Joe Cocker !!

Thank you Lord for allowing me to see Mr. Cocker twice: 1974 and 2003. Small venues, sat about 30 feet away at the Cotillion in Wichita, KS. I still have his hat. It sits above my bar. God, the memories.
These guys were absolutely awesome. Mad Dogs is one of my favorite all times album. I saw Joe Cocker in Jacksonville, Fla in the 70's... don't remember too much... eating brownies ya know.. but a good time was had
