What made Frazier so great is how was how versatile he was. He could box he could slug. Even with out a knockout he could still go the distance with pretty much anyone at his best
He had no other choice. Style-wise Quarry was at a disadvantage against Frazier. If you try to box with him, he'll just try to lounge and chase you. Attempting to counter-punch is also futile since Frazier would just cut the ring off so that you don't have room to counter. The only way to beat him is to out-brawl him, just like what Foreman did. You can out-box him only if you're Ali I guess, but even Ali barely won.
My favourite 'pressure' fighter of all time is Joe Frazier ; love to watch him fight. Ali first fight is the best performance I ever saw , and my favourite of Joe's shorter fights was the first fight with Jimmy Ellis - Jimmy got off to a good start there, but Joe just stepped up the pace, and then it was just a matter of time. Frazier Quarry a classic ! Good days back then. Give me a good Joe Frazier fight anytime : "You better believe it" !
Same here. There's a beauty to slick boxers who can win rounds by jabs but all of the 60s and 70s Heavyweight bouts were amazing (so were the 90s). Guys like Lennox Lewis, the Kitschko bros., Tyson Fury, and Anthony Joshua (even though I believe he has a solid punch) are a bit boring by 60s, 70s, and 90s Heavyweight standards.
@@kawaiiafangirl - Too true and that heavyweight bouts from those days had more excitement and tension. You can't get any better than that, in my opinion.
@@jadezee6316 I agree but Ali brought a ton of excitement to the sport w/ his constant foot, body, and head movement. Ali's jab was also new as he had his fists down by his waste and not by his head. Fury is not quite as mobile as him but the other relatively newer boxers I mentioned have a tendency to jab their way to victory.
Size is not talent! These earlier heavyweights were definitely talented. Many modern heavyweights are not as well conditioned as these older fellows. As it relates to heavyweights, modern training methods, unfortunately, places too much attention on developing "muscular size" and not enough on skill development. Lastly, roadwork is something that many modern heavyweights do not practice with the same diligence as the older fraternity of boxers.
I gave rd 1 to quarry I had 2 even then the rest was quarry getting brutalised. I was saying "stop quarry your poor brain" but he had too much warrior in him to quit.. It didnt end well either
quarry sadly was the definition of dumb as a rock....yes he won fights...because he had a cement chin...but..he took blows he never should have...and did nothing to protect his head....even refusing head gear in sparring!!! now what is that if not stupid
@@jadezee6316 Yeah pretty silly alright, but I wouldn't call him a stupid fighter per se, he had his moments. He definitely wasn't very refined fighter he was a good puncher. And yeah that chin, sometimes its better to go down and not take that many blows
Quarry had fine skills, quick hands, toughness and a good punch. But engaging Frazier at close quarters was suicide. Joe loved going to war and was possibly the toughest heavyweight ever.
Joe Frazier is an all time great. Unfortunately for Joe, the Heavyweights in his ERA were physically much bigger. Joe had trouble with big guys such as george Foreman.
Joe was good at fighting taller guys. It wasn't his height that helped Foreman win, it was the style and power. and a but of pushing. this guy said the HW were bigger back then. Hope that's just bad wording. HWs today are way bigger.
Frazier often said that quarry lost because his skin couldn't cope even though physically he could have carried on. Sadly that's why he was so damaged in his later years
@@DrPacman Same for Ali and his Parkinson's Syndrome. Ali had way tougher skin than Jerry. Quarry fought Ellis with a broken back. Very tough and mishandled in his first 5 years.
How on earth was this Fight of the Year?! It was a dull, monotonous, one-sided drubbing; Quarry was a heavy bag, and Frazier just beat him down. Not a remotely interesting fight.
Quarry is boring. Yeah, he can take a punch (or a bunch f them), but he can't fight. Style is boring. Quarry has no defense, and he has no POP in his punches. He can't punch. Totally, Frazier better. I'll fight anyone who says Quarry is even in the same league as Frazier and Ali.
Quarry fought a silly fight trying to out tough Joe Frazier. But he had good skills and a fine punch-those left hooks to the body and big rights in the first round were no joke
