Sr was still recovering a gunshot wound an he was really jus a street kid part time boxing but he did great to b fighting one of da greatest fighters of all time
Duran partied his a$$ off after the 1st fight against Leonard and blew up to 180lbs. He just barely made the weight requirement--went right down to the wire. Leonard stayed in great condition! That's ENTIRELY on Duran and his management! No excuses!! You can tell Duran was noticeably less sharp and didn't have the fire that he had in their first matchup--he quit because he KNEW he had no chance!!
I thought the fight was a lot closer than other people did, but Duran quit. He was fighting a great fight and landing beautiful shots. He didn’t look like he had the stamina to effectively stalk Leonard and pin him on the ropes. He landed some great shots right before he quit.
Duran que feo te quedo tu mala fe. Saliste frustrado.
Even as a Duran fan that admitted this fight was hard to watch,i believe Wilfred has the style to beat Duran, for the Tommy fight it came close but Duran wasn't really on his best on that point.
Fight was a lot closer than this biased commentary's call. But a better fight than I remembered when I seen live. Cheers to both. Excellent hall of fame fighters.
What's funny is when they show highlights of this fight, they make it like Duran quit when Ray was showboating. It didn't happen that way at all lol. He just knew he couldn't win and quit.
thank you for this upload. there is an estimable documentary on Benitez, created by 'Rich the Fight Historian' which may interest some here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Z8CA7dMpf8k.html
unanimous decision, but not by huge margins. I thought the gap would have been larger: Roberto Duran 153 lbs lost to Wilfred Benitez 152 lbs by UD in round 15 of 15 Date: 1982-01-30 Location: Caesars Palace, Sports Pavilion, Las Vegas, Nevada, USA Referee: Richard Green Judge: Dave Moretti 141-144 Judge: Lou Tabat 141-145 Judge: Hal Miller 142-143 WBC World Super Welterweight Title (2nd defense by Benitez)
Once again Howard Cossel proves he is the most ignorant commentator on TV. Ray fought a brilliant strategic fight, But Mayweather was a tough resilient fighter. Ray used angles, speed , finesse and patience. Beyond Howard's level of knowledge.
Two great fighters, Sugar Ray gave up the combos and started measuring the punches to get around the shell, other fighters would throw wild punches when jr was on the ropes ,ndou is a great example, but srl was hesitant, he'd hold out his punch and time it on its way in,I think that's how he beat the shell
