We earn money to spend. We all spend on basic necessities including food, clothing and shelter. And we spend money on justifiable stuff including entertainment and some comfort.
If you have kids, there are inevitable expenses on education too. Understandably, these expenses are unavoidable.
But what about that large amount of money we spend on useless stuff? I mean, stuff that we do not really need or just cannot use for any reason?

The thing to me is, if you invest and have other income outside of dividends then you will be able to live off dividends without selling. Which means you can pass that on to your kids which will give them a leg up in life. $52k dividends received in 2022.

I agree! That's why it is advisable that you have to invest while you still have a regular job or earning a regular income, and do it constantly. You still need to have something that will keep you going even if you're investing. Good financial planning and money allocation is the key.

True, initially I wasn't quite impressed with my gains, opposed to my previous performances, I was doing so badly, figured I needed to diverssify into better assets, I touched base with a portfolio-advisor and that same year, I pulled a net gain of 550k...that's like 7times more than I average on my own.

Glad I grew up with no cell phone or PC too! Also glad I lived out in the country and could enjoy fishing, hunting, swimming in the pond, riding bikes until dark-thirty, and reading books at bedtime. Such a happy period in my life. And the minute I retired, I moved right back to the lifestyle from whence I came. Couldn't be happier. It's all about family and the joy of being alive. My PC makes quick work of paying bills and catching up on the news, otherwise, it sits alone for all but an hour or so a day. My phone isn't touched unless it rings. Life is good!

Games have started doing that too. Before games were all about merely enjoying them. Finishing them or not were all up to you and how much you wanted out of it. Now battlepasses and the like have been introduced, with the concept of "If you don't play for this much within this timeframe, you will lose out on some cool looking stuff". For some reason though, those kinds of systems just makes me not want to play. Even Animal crossing, where it's all about enjoying it a little bit every day and enjoy the smaller things, I just can't handle having to go in every day to check up on my town. I love getting deep into one game at a time. And at the same time I need variety, which means I tend to jump between 2-3 games at a time. But the moment I feel that the games control me instead of the other way around, I lose interest quickly. Extrinsic motivation ruins so much for me that I end up just not playing the game altogether.

Absolutely. I'm 28 now and in the last couple of years me and my friends have all stopped doing the things we enjoy to chase that mortgage that we as humans are expected to achieve. I don't go out anymore. I just work like a dog so that i can put a deposit down for a shitty apartment.

I actually feel blessed that I grew up (in the 80s-90s) with so few material possessions. We couldn't afford it being on mostly one NZ income and 5 kids to feed. But thankfully mum knew how to sew clothes, plant a variety of foods in the garden while teaching us to be fairly self sufficient. So we figured out early on how to create our own fun without needing many toys or material items. Now days we've taken those values into our own homes and even though we can afford more if we want to, it's just not a priority. We prefer the value of presence over presents. If I ever spend money on my kids, I'll use it towards a fun experience shared with family and friends. Instead of the latest toy/item that will only offer us a temporary high before being forgotten about in a few weeks/months time. Unlike great memories which usually last a lifetime.🥰💜

When I was in middle school, I got bullied if I didn't wear fashion brand clothes. But as I got older, I realized that a lot of the kids that were bullying other kids that were from poorer families that couldn't afford the latest fashion, were actually from poor families themselves. Sometimes the world is fake, sad and self-destructive.

I picked my kids up from school one day and I’ll never forget. My son and daughter began asking me questions about me not having tech devices when I was young and they felt sorry for me because I must’ve been so bored 😂 I’m like no kids I feel bad for y’all. I explained to them fun stuff we did as kids like explore through the woods, play at parks a lot and rode around half the town on bicycles all day.

I think if the world was safer and had more friendly activities for younger children and even teens it be different and they could have such experiences but the way the world is at least from my perception it seems more geared towards adults and less child family friendly than it used to be it seems even thinks for children and young people now care more about marketing and numbers than values much less safety and preserving the innocence of youth that so often is stolen technology isn't perfect and certainly isn't the solution but better to leave them monitored in a space you know they are near and save than outside in the woods or at a candy store unattended where the trained professionals of the world in trafficking and child predators are constantly on the hunt for some poor young soul to take and destroy for their own perverse purposes.

I'm 16 years old. And probably a lot of people know that this is the golden age of materialism, everybody wants to show off their knew sneakers etc. I've been thinking about this a lot and have been trying my best to keep away from it, being different. It's hard let me tell you, it's not easy. But if you want to succeed, you have to sacrifice. When I watched the video, I already knew about it. Meaning I'm already on the right way and you should be too. Be different.

Impressive how thoughtful you are already at that age. One thing I would suggest is: don't try to be different, just be rational. And the rational thing to do is analyze everything without a bias. Not everything that is "normal" is bad, just identify which things are bad, like you did with too much materialism. If you can be just different in those aspects, but "normal" in the good aspects, you will also still fit very well into the society and be a social person, which has many benefits and gives you many opportunities to meet good people.

Growing up in a mid-class family way back in the early '90s is such a treasure, no gadgets, no fancy shoes, no expensive toys just pure fun. We play the whole day every weekend, we play also this called "patentero" with no slippers so that we can run faster, playing hide and seek at night and we swap clothes to lure the one who's looking at us, and lastly, I fight bullies. Sadly, new generations cant experience it right now because of these techs and new stuff. What they saw on the net or on Tv or even with their friends they want to have it too just to be accepted. It seems like they can even appreciate small things now, So sad what I am witnessing right now.

Materialism often leads to "showy display of one's means of life". I read that from somewhere and that smacks truth. After reading some comments I think it needs to be clarified. Materialism is not specific to certain items. Just because you're not tied to your phone or don't have an expensive one doesn't make you not materialistic. Materialism in principle has to do with your pursuit in life. It applies to any material item such as clothes, cars, etc. Materialism is a mindset and it's a trap you can get into quick. Trying to get the necessities like a house or car can lead to materialism. The desire to own a luxury house or luxury car instead of a modest car. That's also materialism if that's your pursuit. On the other hand, you can still be wealthy and not be materialistic if you're not making the obtaining of things your main concern in life.

You know I remember a time before s Facebook. When I was a teenager. I did feel happier then. Part of it is the lack of responsibility I had back then. Part of it is also the fact I spent a lot of time with my friends in the woods playing paintball. Now that I’m older I’ve realized the only thing that matters in life is friends and family. I noticed at some point in my life that the more I concerned myself with my external appearance the more it would elicit social anxiety when I would go out. You start to pay too much attention to your own appearance making you overly self-conscious. I'm not saying to avoid grooming or taking care of yourself but instead to throw any concerns or thought out the window once you walk out of your house.

Ah, I remember the good old days growing up in Greater Manchester. We would step out and be out all day! We would go fishing, catch frogs and tadpoles, go on bike rides and get lost, play wembley, football, cricket, tag, hide and seek, build swings off trees, light fires (safe ones only, honest), build dens, play with conkers, marbles, cards, collect football stickers, wrestling atickers etc. We would only come home when we had to and by then it was tea time or even later! WE LOVED IT. The zombie generation has no clue about what fun we had 😃!!

I as a parent and a man born in the 1970s and my early teenage yrs spent growing up in the 80s. I was beyond happy.. we had nothing but trees to climb, bikes to jump ramps, basketball and a hoop if someone took a chance and climbed the school wall. I had a tan from never being inside. I don’t remember any stress or anxiety or missing nothing. Now as a grown man I can’t stop buying crap. Earbuds, laptops, phones, useless shite. I’m drowning in it. Some days I won’t leave the house as I’m on the phone scrolling on Amazon or other sites. I work from home and it’s a constant worry in my mind that I will buy something. Or constantly look at the news and get more anxious. In my head I am saying “I will enjoy using those €300 headphones….but in 4 weeks time I find an issues with them and buy something else. I went down the rabbit hole of photography. I bought so much gear, but I don’t know how to use it. 😢 For me it’s currently a time where I think society has fallen apart. I think because people's biggest fear is not being liked (the tribal instinct of being accepted meant safety) they will copy what everyone around them is doing and not really question if it's something that they really really want in their life. They copy out of fear. But if people reject you for not doing what they are doing, they are not the type of company you need and you need to find those like yourself. But like yourself I have no interest in what others think of me either and if you are ok with not being liked then that's ok. Trouble is many people can't stand not being liked so will just comply or do whatever it takes to be part of the pack.

Not exactly. Everyone needs some guideline, a compass of what to do in life. It was religion, then "building a prosperous capitalistic world" but now these systems of values came out of fashion and there is nothing adequate enough to replace them. Jordan Peterson does a good job at pointing this out and trying to provide a substitute, but he constantly gets smeared by all kinds of sore assholes.

I've recently taken steps to delete all of the toxic social media apps and only I watch motivational/wholesome content going forward on RU-vid, I've cut out the amount of time I spend watching movies and gaming also. I am so happy that a few years ago, I simply purged all my consumerism/materialism "needs". It was not a revelation or a decision, I simply stopped caring about all those things. Simplicity and minimalism give me calmness...I do not want to have 15 pairs of sneakers, I do not need 60 shirts/tops. It actually stresses me out to have so many things, meaning that if I have to move to a new place I need to have a mountain of boxes to worry about. I now only replace things that break/have holes in them (but still try to have them repaired first). I have repaired my jeans, I have repaired my work shoes, I have repaired a pair of boots that I like. Why throw them away? It costs less to repair and you don't need to go around looking for new stuff. Doing martial arts helped on this as you focus on the mental part of what fulfills you. A hobby that is fun. I appreciate the simple things in life...having a good sparring night, going to the movies to see a film I was so looking forward to, being around friends playing board games or card games, reading a nice book...it's just amazing to not have to use something with a screen. I agree with the guy in the video, I can never understand why on earth people go to live concerts not appreciating what they are watching live and instead they use a phone to "share" the amazing experience. I may take one picture just to remember the night and that's it. I do binge on RU-vid but that's because I don't watch TV. I watch interesting videos that add to my encyclopedic knowledge instead.

In the summer of 2019 I took a trip to San Francisco and Yosemite park by myself. I went to the campus of my old college and took some pictures. I also took picture in Yosemite. When I came home, I realized that none of the pictures had me in them. As I posted them on my social media, I though, is anyone going to believe me that I went on a trip, because there are no pictures of me posted here. I had completely forgotten about myself as I was thoroughly enjoying myself in the environment I was in.

What bothers me is when people take 10 pictures of their trip and they are in all 10 pictures. There is also the fact that we as children are “programmed” by our parents way of loving. If we sense, early in life, that love needs to be bought by material and external stuff, that’s how we are going to behave as adults. It’s important to realize this and break the bonds we have with mum and (or) dad, in order to behave according to our real needs. Never is too late to have a healthy childhood 😃

I have never been materialistic in my whole life, not even as a kid. Yet I still have a bit of the problem that is brought up in this video. Like at times spending too much of my time scrolling on internet and such. I am a gamer so sitting at my computer comes natural to me as it's part of my hobby. And I also do digital art so that's also at the computer... So unfortunately I cannot completely unplug my life from technology as both my hobbies are done with technology... So I sometimes struggle to find a healthy balance of maybe spending too much time on internet when I could have spent time doing art or something. Yeah... When I was a kid I did traditional art only and I remember I did art every day and sometimes spent my whole weekend doing comics and stuff. Damn was I productive back then. As an adult I don't know what happened to change that. At 16 depression and several undiagnosed mental disabilities started to hit me like a truck and almost killed me and that's when I also lost interest in doing art and only did it once in a while. Still at 28 I am not completely out of that mental health rabbit hole so I'm not sure when or if I ever will find my way back to those simpler times of just enjoying my life instead of being consumed by adult worries and such. And I also feel so tired all the time as an adult, I never did as a kid. I don't know if that's just in my head or if kids just have way more energy? I tell myself "I'm to tired to do art today, watching youtube is easier" and so I say "I will do art on weekend instead" and then I still feel just so burnt out from the week that I still can't bring myself to do it. Endless circle of depressive state and semi-burnt out.

I love this. It's given me new ways to explain what I've been trying to instill in my daughter since birth. Thank you very much. I've been able to make her realize that what she wants in the store will only make her happy for a few minutes and then it just becomes "clutter" in her life, but I was missing the part about how to replace that desire with something valuable. You use "flowstate" as an example replacement. I don't get into flowstate often but when I do, I'm aware of it and grateful for it.

Born in the mid 80's, so glad I got to grow up playing outside. Building forts, getting dirty, getting into minor trouble... Being a kid without Internet, Cell phones or the 24/7 News cycle. Dial up AOL internet was my childhood lol... Not even on Social media..

I record videos on my phone for me & my kids. I rarely share anything other than with my sister or mom. I love love the memories we are recording together. But I also try to enjoy the moment

Its intriguing how we are getting back to our fundamental religious intuitions about life through a pure secular mindset. The bloke is speaking about going beyond materialistic wants and extrinsic motivations and getting in touch with our internal vision to guide our actions. He is also talking about coming together as a community once a week to make conversations about what are the deepest values that we care about as a society and to hold ourselves accountable in pursuit of these values. Well, that's the role and function of religion in any society.

@@psionicinversion you can notice the idea of god or the idea of 'a spirit that pervades everything' is present in the most primitive tribes. And so, one can infer that religious beliefs has existed since the dawn of human consciousness. On the contrary, atheism or the idea of dead matter (matter without spirit) is a modern idea, which can also be attributed to the fact that we have become more individualistic and technocratic as a society. But this has created a void in us, which we are trying to fill up through false gods such as wealth, power and pleasure.

@@melroycorrea7720 yeah and we've also been taking mind altering substances for an extremely long time. When the native indians go off on there spirit quest they literally take a psycho active substance and are off their tits seeing all sorts of stuff. Shamans of villages were basically the same, they would take some substance to try get an answer for something. They were just tripping out and may stumble across a thought they wouldnt have had when they normal. Happens alot to people who are drunk cus it temporarily breaks our thought patterns and allows us to think in different ways.

@@shanedingz Technology has made the world better. Because of smartphones I can now communicate with people billions of miles away. I make a living through my smartphone. I learned game development and programming using my smartphone and laptop. The advantages are endless. There are also disadvantages but this applies to any innovation. Guns and nuclear energy in the wrong hands can bring about great destruction and horror. But in the right hands they bring order and energy. You can't through away technology just because it has negative side effects. By that logic we should abandon cars, agriculture, textile industry, petroleum industry, virtually anything that is not natural. By your reasoning we should go back to the stone age.

And no offence to your profession, but video games are a false reality. A toy. The world doesn’t need them. Great that you found a way to make money at it. And you went a bit far. There is a lot of technology that has made the world ‘better’. Easier to be alive certainly. But as with everything, it can be taken too far. Just because you can, does that mean you should?.. I don’t enjoy watching people stare into their smartphones like zombies. Yet I am guilty of it. Adapt or die. That’s the way of the world. But I was alive during a period where that didn’t exist. And I prefer it.

Our mindset and our emotions plays big role here. When we feel we are failed or done our best like eg. Passing an exam we often to give ourselves an rewards, this reward/s its either material like car or vacay keep us going . For some material things are their outlet to overcome their anxious and self insecurity.

I work on a project car. Lowrider. It’s my happy place. Yes it’s materialistic but at the same time it comes as a result in being successful with my hobby. I did catch myself showing off on Instagram and other platforms what I have like the ego side of things. And I realize none of it really matters. The compliments I get daily when I’m driving none of it means or matters or holds any value. I used to be homeless and nobody but a few cared about me when I was walking on the street. Now everybody has nice or bad things to say to me. So I quit showing off on social media, and just started working on my dream car in “silence” if you will. And I found out my true genuine happy place.

So I'm only a movie! But if it's for me then it's ok. You're not a narrative. Stop looking at your life like a distant observer judging its value based solely on the standards others have implanted into your consciousness. You are a human being that needs a meaningful existence not symbols of success and material possessions. This ideas that if you're doing it for yourself it will be better than if you're doing it for others is a trick of the mind. Don't fall into that trap. You're still chasing self worth whether it's for others or yourself. Doing things so you can prove to yourself your own value and worth as a human being is disastrous and will only lead to disappointment. You won't find yourself by becoming a big success, having an expensive car and getting post graduate degree. Not that there is anything wrong with being successful but ask yourself this, who am I at my core. If you were to strip everything away would you be any less yourself or valuable without the big career, money and status. Everything we judge ourselves and others bye is based on the value, usefulness and estimation society has for us. What if societies values were junk values. What would you do after you've spent decades of your life pursuing these things only to find yourself lonely, alienated and atomized. When they no longer need you you will be thrown away and forgotten. This is the harsh reality we live in. When you are poor and unsuccessful people look at you with contempt and when you are accomplished people look at you with envy. No narrative will fix this problem. Changing the makeup and costumes on a pig won't change the fact that a pig is still a pig. Our society is controlled by sociopaths and monsters and we have become sick from this mad world we live in.

Very true, just like food cravings and overeating. Once you can control it, your relationship with food switches and it becomes very easy to control your weight and set better health goals from there. It all starts with researched, tested and experienced knowledge. 👍

Trouble is many people can't control their desires as they think wanting more will make them happy but they are constantly hungry as nothing seems to fill them up. I have some material things but I truly value them and I don't buy often. It just doesn't make sense to constantly keep buying things as you'll never be satisfied and it just becomes a cluttered hoard.

Controlling one’s desire is incredibly difficult. Spirituality suggests a more sustainable path is to distance ourselves from our ego, which gets attached to our sense of identity. And an ego will always crave more so it can continue to build itself - this cannot be controlled. What can be controlled is knowing you are more than just your ego, and making a deep relationship with who you really are.
