When talking about NoGi people always forget to mention Luta Livre. Back in the days it was popular in brazil like BJJ and practiced among poor people who couldn't afford a Gi... but when BJJ crossed the ocean and went big in the US , Luta Livre remained a more niche discipline and was than "absorbed" when NoGi became a thing
Thanks for sharing this. This is why I really like the internet and comment section. Sure a lot of it can be bad/annoying. But getting this sort of information is so cool.
So, I was reading that Luta Livre actually just means “wrestling” Luta - Fight and Livre - Free. I was reading that LL allows for techniques that BJJ doesn’t. Such as strikes. But the wording in both articles I’m reading is awkward. The other big difference is that LL allows for slams. Is this accurate? Just by definition Free Fighting makes it sound like absolutely everything can be used. But since it also means wrestling, I’d imagine strikes aren’t allowed, but I just got confused as two articles brought up striking. Thanks for any reply.
@@notsoberoveranalyzer8264 as far as I know LL is an only grappling style. The one that allowed strikes was Vale Tudo (meaning everithing is allowed) and it was a primitive form of MMA
Damn the fact that Gordon fuckin Ryan started jiu jitsu in 2011 is insane! Starting out as a brand new noob and less than a decade later he’s the undisputed best in the world and by now he’s unanimously the GOAT of No-Gi.
For anyone curious, apparently Eddie Cummings stopped training bjj, he got a rich girlfriend and got into finance. He didn’t like the egos and attitudes in bjj apparently. Which is interesting because I would’ve thought finance would have some horrific personality’s
I did Naga nogi in 95 or 96. Amazing how rogan doesn’t even know shit. Kimo Royce I recall around 5 minutes, Erikson was 295 and 45 minutes into facing Murillo it was called draw. The show was MARs. Rogan zooshitsu no good
@@ransakreject5221 It'snot amazing at all. Rogan is a moron who knows how to bullshit and sound like he knows what he's talking about. Plus all the weed he smokes has made him even dumber.
I couldn't watch Jiu Jitsu with the Gi. No-Gi is awesome, especially as someone who did Greco-Roman Wrestling when I was younger, it's so similar only real difference being Pins vs Submissions. The whole concept of having fundamentals of the Sport revolve around clothing always bothered me, No-Gi is the way.
He really doesn't, I mean sure he developed the game A LOT, Eddie added a lot of new techniques to no gi, but it was already snow balling in popularity before Eddie made a name for himself. If Eddie never did Jiu Jitsu, we would still have guys like Gordan Ryan.
You trained under Walt didn't you Justin? Meant to be a phenomenal grappler for some reason doesn't seem to get the credit I think he deserves. Plus nogi has always been around in brasil in the form of Luta livre which is give or take pretty much nogi translated in Portuguese
@@Slymo11 Yes, I trained under Walt. He was unreal on the mats, and you're 100 percent correct on the Lute Livre. I had forgotten that when posting my comment. Well put.
yeah, I walked into Greg's in ABQ in June 2000 to start training and he already had a no-gi competition team (Keith Jardine, Kyle Seals, Thomas Schulte, etc...). I was only there for four years (I was active duty, and OEF/OIF was a thing), but I did probably 6 or 7 no-gi tournaments with those guys, including a few Grappler's Quests. Those were the days, before the UFC blew up and became a real sport....
Wellington Megaton Dias is 54 years old and has been competing continuously as a black belt for about 36 years now. His daughter is a good UFC fighter too. I could be wrong but I don't think he's gone a full year without competition for over 30 years and enters regular divisions against young guys in their prime.
3:00 this is why I’m thinking of quitting. I love bjj and the benefits, but 2nd rib fracture later and a nerve damage issue in my knee where my toe is numb has me thinking I don’t want long term issues for a hobby.
These lads don't know their history. No-Gi jiu-jitsu started in the favelas of Brazil because people didn't have the money to afford a gi and they called it "Luta Livre" and Luta-Livre and The Gracies' had a decades long blood feud because The Gracies considered it disrespectful to take their Martial Art and not follow the tradition of wearing the gi.
Sure just ignore that the founder of Luta Livre was a Catch Wrestler and based the sport on Catch. And that Catch Wrestling has existed since the late 1800s. Just ignore it. Luta Livre comes from BJJ. You know what, all submission grappling comes from BJJ. The submissions in ancient Greece? Yep. Came from BJJ. Pankration? The Spartans? You better believe the Gracies trained those guys.
You is a good example of knowing zero history of J J .The BJJ start in Manaus capital of the Amazon State has nothing whatsoever any connection with luta livre . First law when you as a white belt The Master would say loud and clear was. Here punching is not allowed . Jack read or ask people who really knows
The fight they might be talking about with Royce is him vs. Ken Shamrock that lasted past the PPV time and went to a draw. Kimo wasn't a long fight at all by todays standards.
@@mistersonnen848 Jon Jones deadlifts 700lbs & he is the goat. would you rather fight a stronger MMA fighter or a weaker MM Fighter? would you rather fight 5 full rounds or 10 full rounds or finish the fight early
Was Dan Servant and it took almost 15 minutes . Servant was most of the fight on top , punching and throwing everything at Royce . Than it happen he somehow got a leg around his head push his head down with the help of his kimono pants on a head choke
That Royce vs Kimo fight is only like 5 minutes. It's a wild 5 minutes tho with groin strikes, hair grabbing, cage door opening and people on the outside getting right onto the cage.
Nope. The Gracies were training no-gi at least part of the time decades before this. When I attended the Gracie Academy as an instructor candidate in 1998, a significant number of the more advanced classes were already without the gi.
And NAGA had nogi bjj as early as 95. Nogi in competition existed years befire ADCC. That’s why adcc was started. I did Naga in 96. Adcc was started to see who’s best at this new sport that was going on. And Royce kimo I recall as around 5 min, Erikson Vs Murillo was 45 min and in MARS. These poseurs are newbs
Quick question. How did you not get a copyright claim for your JRE video? I have tried to upload a clip and I get a claim from SuperBam, Inc. who say they own the rights to the JRE vrideo.
@@jonahgrigoryan I did the same and kept getting blocked and a claim. I fought it but RU-vid said that they had full rights over the content. probably some sleezy people trying to steal Rogans content.
We used to train no gi in Rio back in the 90s. 9 to 12h ever Saturday. There must surely be pictures out there of people training no gi in Rio 30 years ago. How do you guys think we could train during the day on summer in Rio folks!?
Yep: can't hold baby for more than 10 minutes without back pain, sleep with a pillow between my legs, many shoulder injuries, now the back/hip injuries are coming through & that's just 17-odd years of martial arts
The early days of UFC didn't have time limits? They were 33 minutes max, Joe literally works there. And these guys are talking like "nogi" didn't exist when it's submission wrestling that has been around since the start of history, the Olympics were sub wrestling til 1920 and AAU til 1927. Jiujitsu and luta livre fought massive battles over gi vs nogi, catch wrestling, shoot wrestling in Japan, Pehlwani in India etc. What kinda garbage is this?
People don't walk around shirtless or in rashguards often. It's all situational if I'm on a beach sure. If it's fall or winter I'm choking you with that sweater and heavy jacket you have on...lol. l
@joshwilliams6517 Wrong? A GI is almost like a suit blazer plus the pants are baggy, how many fights are you getting into with someone in a suit? No GI is more practical for the reason that a compression shirt is more like a t-shirt which most people you encounter would be wearing
“No-gi jiu jitsu” is not new everybody. Neither is “brazillian jiu jitsu”. It’s all bullshit. Submission grappling has been around for thousands of years, catch wrestling for hundreds. Brazilians just came along and took credit for a Japanese martial art that they “modified”.
This clip is a bit misleading though unless you listen to the whole podcast. But you're right. It sounds like it was "invented" in the 90's. Gladiators were doing this ish in the Roman Coliseum. Tool-less cavemen "NoGi" their food. 🤣 Yeah. Modern name, old art.
Imagine khabib without time limits. so many times a good grappler has someone down and the person on bottom is just holding on till the end of the round.
@@joshdorrance8821 I mean I do really enjoy those matches even if they are 30 minutes plus. It is awesome to see top grapplers go at esch other and see the details and their perfected craft.
Is it just me or does it sound like they should be worried about Eddie Cummings , dude with the white hair makes me think he killed his ass or suhm he tried to brush right past that shit , and he said he “was” good at bjj , idk maybe I’ve had to much coffee
@@Mushimiya yeah done my research this morning I’m a Muay Thai practitioner, my bjj knowledge is very small , I’ve seen many people call him the best of his time , 57 - 0 since 2018 , watched some of his highlights too , very complex guy , his ability to maneuver out of certain locks are insane
No time limit matches don't prove who's better in bjj it's just a cardio game. Most of the time a lot of nothing is going on while they wait for the other person to get tired. No sport that has zero time limit is actually interesting to watch after the first 35 minutes
No gi the way to only train. Lots of people train bjj for self defense. No one on the streets wear gi. I think gi is very dum. Mma fighters don't fight with gi . Who cares what people think. No gi the only way to train. Gi overrated.
@@bassbndt wow you’re stupid.. “I can guarantee you’re not going to get into a street fight against somebody not wearing clothes”… 🤦🏻♂️ no one trains no gi naked.. you wear a rash guard.. a rash guard is a long sleeve and pants.. that’s actual clothes… a gi is a robe.. you do not wear robes in a street fight.. you do not wear a gi in the ufc or in mma.. gi bjj also focuses on using the gi in its submissions which is stupid because that does not translate because you do not wear a gi in an mma fight and you do not wear a robe in street fight.. and it’s also stupid because grappling is about manipulating someone’s body not their clothes.. all facts.. and therefore the facts literally prove no gi is superior 100%… I can guarantee you don’t even train and have never been in a fight yourself and you have a low Iq.
@@CKpremium1992 A rash guard is not equivalent to clothing one would wear on the street… in fact it is infinitely closer to being topless than wearing an actual clothing item. A jacket or thick shirt would function in the same way the grips of a gi do, that is the entire point. You’re facts are not facts by the way, they are opinions. Maybe brush up on your vocabulary before you continue making a fool of yourself on the internet.
@@CKpremium1992 Also, you were quite quick to fall back on the classic “I bet you don’t do X I bet you don’t do Y you must have a low IQ you’re stupid” etc. Funny enough, it is “fact” that these self conscious retorts are one of the primary indicators of one’s own lack of intelligence (also known as low IQ). There’s a “fact” for you to ponder. Stop projecting - individuals like yourself are a terrible look for our sport.
i respect gi bjj but in reality it inferior to no gi.. no gi is the most practical and useful meaning its the best to translate to mma or a street fight/self defense situation. Gi bjj focuses so much of the moves on the gi itself like grabbing the collar and sleeves etc and obviously you dont wear a gi in an mma competition or a street fight. what are you gunna do tell the guy youre fighting in the street hold on a second we need to put on these robes real quick lol.. I had a buddy who had just got into bjj and he was telling me how he wanted to do it for self defense etc and i was like then why are you doing gi? do no-gi and i provided all the reasons above plus more and he proceeded to argue with me like saying no gi doesnt do belts.. which first off who cares if they do or dont but they do and he kept arguing until he said maybe i wanna do bjj for different reasons... and literally what it boiled down to was the fact he wanted to do gi bjj because he wanted to wear a gi purely for the looks and looking cool... I have another buddy who got into gi bjj and he would wear the sweatshirt from his gym that said MMA on it anytime he knew we would be somewhere where there was gunna be a lot of people lol... i think a lot of people who do gi bjj today do it because theyre insecure and want to look cool and they dont do it for the purity and love of the sport and the mental/phyiscal/emotional/spiritual aspects...
You wrote a whole novel to spew an opinion of one's prettiness in a gi. Choose whatever you enjoy going. Period. However? The Gi as with clothes, that people around me wear all the time, offers realism in a "street fight"/self defense situation. To think otherwise is ridiculous. Grab a tee, grab their jacket, shirt? Same ramifications as a Gi wearing partner. Actually been a street fight of actual notoriety?
@@Capius1272 lemme guess you’re a gi bjj cultist?? I wrote a novel of facts and those facts triggered you because you’re sensitive and you responded with something petty… btw there’s a difference between clothes and a bath robe bro lol… I’ve experienced violence at the most extreme as well as seen things and been through things you couldn’t fathom or handle.. good night buddy.
@@CKpremium1992 Nah, I think your friends are dumb and that might say something considering your opinion is stating people who train/trained in a gi will not have transferrable skills to MMA, a street fight or No-gi. There are so many examples of guys who competed and trained in a Gi at the highest level (IBJJF) and also competed in No gi and been World champions at THE highest in No-gi , take for examples Marcus Buchecha/ who is a multi-time world campion in Gi and No-gi (ADCC), on top of that he is now fighting MMA and is starching the competition in One Championship. Nicholas Meragali another example, I could go on and on. Clearly you know zero about jiu jitsu, respectfully.
Gi is like wearing a saddle for people to hold on and stay on top. I hate it. It's also like wearing a noose around your neck. I hate wasting my time learning shit like lapel chokes and I hate that I even learn to defend it because I will never be choked like that by anyone in the real world. It honestly feels like a waste of time. Collar chokes are BS
I do find no gi easier, but to say gi doesn't have any carry over to real life i don't think is true. The problem is a gi makes it quite a lot easier to choke someone out than say a hoodie, so unless you're doing gi at a high level you might struggle
No Gi is way more realistic in street fights. The Gi is just too much clothing coming off or getting in the way. Gi grapplers are way too reliant on grips on clothing. No Gi is the real deal.
mortar2k. Mo Jassim is mortar2k. The guy that donated those huge, $10K, $5K, donations to pashaBiceps / Shroud / sodapoppin. Not that it would ever come up in this podcast, but it was so weird to watch this podcast and know the history of mortar2k.
