James Hetfield is a musician, singer and songwriter known for being the co-founder, lead vocalist, rhythm guitarist and main songwriter for the American heavy metal band Metallica.
This is why I watch Joe Rogan. I'd rather hear James Hetfield talk about bee's than get asked the same questions about Cliff Burton,Dave Mustaine, and Jason Newstead for the 1000th time.
Yeah especially when you consider how long he's been singing the way he does. You'd expect him to have a kinda rough strained voice but it's the total opposite. And he still sounds amazing when he sings too
"Eye of the Bee holder" "Harvester of Honey" "Poor Twisted Bee" "The Hive James Built" "The Thing that should not bee" "Iced Honey" "My Friend of Mr. Bee"
I met James Hetfield when I was in high school, while I was working at chillie’s. Not wanting to be “that guy” I avoided saying anything until he was on his way out, when I said “hey, I love your work.” He stopped and cut it up with me for like 10 minutes. I was just a bus boy at chillies. He is the real deal.
I started listening to Metallica when I was about 16 years old. I had long hair, a face full of piercings and smoked weed for the UK Olympic Weed Smoking team. I'm a 43 year old Electrician now. 2 kids, straight as a die. I never imagined I would be riveted to a podcast of James Hetfield talking about beekeeping. Life is one crazy ride man..
This is why Joe is great. Instead of asking 900 metallica questions and making the interview about 1 aspect of James, he let him go on about what's important to him on a personal level 👍
Yes! I love this. It sucks so bad when you see musicians, actors, actresses and people getting asked the exact same, shallow questions at every interview. Its so refreshing when these guys can just talk and share things you don't normally get a chance to hear.
Also why I like this style of media, as opposed to the time constraints of mainstream TV and radio. He knows he’s got all the time in the world to ask about the Metallica stuff
Exactly! James says, "I could sit here and talk for a whole hour about bees." and Joe cuts in with, "Let's do it!" Joe Rogan does conversations, not interviews.
yeah... I was REALLY surprised that Joe didn't mention Prof. Peterson after Het mentioned that. The Bay Area is largely lost to the pointlessly Liberal. Can't hate on Vale & it's an excellent choice for a place to live in the USA, but He & his family would've been FINE up in Humboldt. Thems' CUN-TREE up there. Just guns & greens in arboreal Nor-Cal.
James is right. Lived here for 15 yrs. Coexist stickers on every car bumper you see, but they cannot coexist with anyone that has deferring opinions. They are the new fascists.
*_"I don't know much about moose."_* lol...I love how randomly JRE episodes begin. Reminds me of the one with Duncan where Duncan started it all off by saying _"This is my grandfather's flannel and I want you to wear it."_ Too fucking funny... :)
"I tell ya, if I could exercise all of those demons, I would have, but it's something that you embrace. It's a part of me - and I get to celebrate it in my music." Dude's poetic just talking in normal conversation. It's like his mind just produces song verses unconsciously
@@remondx8880 meh, you're a hardworking musician it's pretty much the opposite, most of the "hard" things around music making are explained in music theory
Man the mystery of a band and initial attraction through an album cover is something that I miss and we will not have again. Back in the 80s and early 90s, the mystique of a band made them rock stars. The only way we could find out anything about them was through music magazines or occasional MTV interviews. And bands like Metallica were even more underground. Man I miss buying records and tapes.
Me 2... the thrill of hearing the flip side and finding one written just for you......... or tearing open the package and a sticker falls out and you hold it and it feels priceless... or deciding who is gonna get your allowance this week.
Being a liberal guy, I've known for years that James is a conservative. I think it's a little silly, and very band wagon-esque that people are shocked by James' convervatism to the point of boycotting shows. My own political views will not stop me from buying every single Metallica album, or going to their shows every chance I get. Additionally, regardless of my political views, I respect James' views because I'm a fucking adult, and that's what adults do.
finally, a liberal who seems to have a brain in his skull. I think people blow politics way out of proportion especially with celebrities and actors and musicians. For example, I may not like if idk Billie Joe Armstrong from Green Day yells out f trump and f this and f that and is very very open about their political views, whatever. Imma still go to his concerts and stuff. I love the music, thats what i am there for.
Most of us have brains man... I think the amount of hyperbole that gets thrown around at the same time when talking about politics is a huge reason why they are so polarizing. I wouldn't go so far as to say James is a conservative. I think he leans right in some regards but on average I'd say he's more leftward leaning. I'm not talking about the radical left that gave him the incentive to move to Colorado, just more left than right. He even said that he thinks progressivism is good because it's moving the world forward and hes down with that. What he doesn't like is being told what to do when the reasoning is just downright moronic. Being a lead singer/songwriter and guitar player of the worlds last extremely successful metal band you would think.... rebel. Yes indeed, he absolutely is that and I love him for it.
Matthew Speicher - learned some factoids about *Apis mellifera* i never would've known without Powerful J. Hetfield; bananas tick 'em off, for instance. . . ....who knew? Things Giligan never taught us!
Met James at a car show a few years back. Super nice guy. They say "don't meet your heroes", but meet James. Always meet James. He is every bit the humble, nice, personable guy you expect him to be.
I've been following Metallica since I was 13 and this is the greatest interview with James I've ever seen. Joe Rogan deserves his own late night show. Way better than most of the corporate shills out there now.
Im amazed his vocal chords are in tact. Just think of singing "Exit light Enter night Take my hand We're off to never-never land" for 100's of live shows. I would have laryngitis all the time.
im 33 yo, my oldest bro introduced me to metallica at 8yo, im from venezuela, and also learned english listening to met songs and reading their lyrics. This band has been part of our family like a fuc"#ing anthem. thanks het and thanks Joe for this awesome conversation! i wish i could do that my self!
no doubt ! and the way he really, TRULY appreciates the stuff that they talk about. The bees thing was incredible. The guy was really mesmerized. That's why it is such a great podcast.

I met James when I was working security at the Sharks Arena where I worked. He was a guest during the Stanley Cup Finals and came up to get interviewed at one of the outdoor media stages where I was posted and I got to chat with him before his turn. After he was done a bunch of people swarmed him for photos but he managed to come and shake my hand before he went off on his way. It was an epic ending to my job because I hated it, so I quit that very week and went on vacation.
unun septium I would like to respectfully disagree. the numbers can't be refuted and Metallica are one the biggest bands, period. but Phil Anselmo, enough said!!
Shane Raines If telling facts about someone induces violence, then that someone is a piece of shit. It sounds like something Phil would do. I loved Pantera until I saw the racism.
unun septium Phil anselmo in my opinion is the best front man in metal period he could make a concert lose there fucking minds but I do agree also with James
@@MetalliCxZero he is, always has been, true, he's a bit better now though, but that doesn't take away that it would be a pretty cool interview, definitely better than Steve Tyler
Oddly enough, for me as a huge, lifelong Metallica fan, I loved hearing such a long interview about everything except Metallica. James is such an interesting guy and an icon. So for me it was unbelievably interesting just to hear about life. I'd like to think I know everything about Metallica, and it was fun to just hear about James as a person. But, you're right, they need to do another cool interview like this.
James is one of the most solid, humble, fucking badass dudes there ever was. There's also an old video of someone researching and recording in a lab setting what happens when he screams. His voicebox and lungs produce so much force and vapor that he expels a sonic vapor pressurewave when he initiates the scream. And they recorded it.
DoorDevil You mean Dave Mustaine? He and Metallica are on good terms for quite some time now. And Dave's not a dumbass for having felt that way for quite some time in the past after getting kicked out of Metallica. It's just the way he felt about that happening and he expressed it like any normal human being does. You can't just stop caring about what you love doing the most instantly, can you?
no way man. marcs' is an ego trip. his passive aggression neuters half of his interviews. joe is able to put his shit on hold sometimes and thats key. marc imposes on ppl.
Jonah Falcon well the best thing about rogans podcasts for the most part he wants his guest to feel comfortable and allowing someone to talk about something they are passionate about makes them feel more natural therefore we get to see a different side of James
Listening to Joe Rogan's podcasts is like going back to school, but now you are actually learning useful and interesting things... the interviews are so long that guests have the opportunity to open up and say what they want (as opposed to talk shows interviews)
This guy and the music his band made, literally helped me survive my youth. I don't know if I met him, that I wouldn't be a big crying mess, not just for the amount of gratitude I have as a musician, but also all of the emotion tied to their songs. I think you'd need a squeegee to mop me up. Thank you James and Metallica for everything.
Most of the country used to have this attitude. Many people still do. Just don't watch televised media and ignore Hollywood. You'll start to find out that when those places are not busy telling who we should hate we can all get along. Even when we disagree. :)
he admitted somewhere, that back in the day when Metallica became big that he did not manage the fame too well, but so was the case with all members of his band. Now he came into age, when people usually get sober, unless there is something wrong with them..
Some former Metallica bandmates (Jason Newsted especially) would beg to differ, apparently James and Lars hogg complete creative control when mixing the albums. But he seems like a nice dude otherwise yeah...
It's always been that way, Each member is open to have their ideas and inputs put its always been down to lars and james to decide if its up to a Metallica standard. I wouldn't really say that it speak about who they are outside of the band as regular people
When I was 12, I got my first Metallica CD, I had talked to a cousin who is about 8yrs older than me, and he was a big Metallica fan. I asked him what album I should get since I was just getting to know the band. He recommended the black album, he said that it was a good start for someone who is beginning to listen to Metallica. To this day I still believe that he was right in giving me that advice, it was the logical option since it was a very digestible album, however I got “...And justice for all”... I remember coming home, and playing that cd, it was just exactly as James described here, laying on the floor just listening to it, and from time to time looking at the booklet, reading the lyrics (English is not my first language)... It was simply amazing, I was with my brother and we just loved the whole damn thing from beginning to end. Priceless!
And then young Jamie rips a snorter in front of James Hetfield..how fucking embarrassing..I would of thrown Jamie out ..get out you scruffy tit how dare you drop guts in front of Metallica
Metallica lyrics are what inspired me to want to write. They were probably my first real introduction into how words can create epic and vivid imagery in your brain, not just tell a story.
@ThatMartinJF: Absolutely right. I don't know how that guy thought it's about Vietnam after listening to the lyrics. It might have been, but it's not. Then again it could be universal. He probably thought the helicopter in the beginning sounds like something from Apocalypse Now. Did they have helicopters in WWI? Maybe that sets the mood and if you listen to the lyrics, you might see it happening in Vietnam. But I think Hetfield took inspiration from the movie and wrote some more universal war lyrics.
