Terrence Odonnell Tulsa He lived in Tulsa for awhile. He was born Jay Oklahoma. I believe he once lived in Kansas City and died in Omaha Nebraska as well.
Say what you like about Tommy Morrison but he had a great record, 52 fights, 48 wins, 42 wins by K.O and only 3 losses and 1 draw. That’s damn good by anyone’s standards.
steven lindsay uh yes I do. It’s just facts. He himself admitted he was on steroids. The only good fighters he beat were old George foreman and old razor Ruddock.
At the height of his stardom Tommy took the time to write me a letter of encouragement after I sustained an injury and subsequent surgery from boxing. He was a good man. Flawed but who isn't?!
@@nebulaquinn yes Sir. Won't let me attach the picture. One of my most cherished possessions. Was a such a surprise to get that in the mail from him and gave me the motivation to make it back.
Tommy had the potential to be a great fighter. I agree he seemed like a good hearted guy who sadly listened to the wrong people and it cost him everything. One of boxing’s greatest tragedies
Ill never forget that knockout by Mercer. Jeez it was wild, I think Tommy had his brain fried after that. Mercer was a mean cunt, I hated him and I was well glad when Larry Holmes beat him in his next match.
I met Tommy and his then wife years ago on a cruise to the Caribbean. Literally hung out with him all week. My whole life I was a big bodybuilder and thats how we got talking. Tommy was an extremely nice guy - as well as being very generous. He actually spent about $1,000 in a casino teaching me how to play blackjack. He did party his ass off as well. I carried him to his room a few late nights that week. I asked him point blank about being HIV and he said getting syringes was hard back then and he used to inject steroids and he and a few of his gym buddies would share needles. At the end of the week we swapped info and for quite some we called each other or wrote letters. Very cool guy and definitely had some demons
Great boxer, and youre right. Tommy accomplished a lot, and despite losing to some of the bigger names in the sport, he had a great career. I hope hes at peace now.
I went to school with Tommy's two sons, I remember seeing him come into the student center before he passed. Both of his sons are boxing now and both undefeated.
I went to Jay High School with Tommy he was a great dude. Kept in touch with him for a while after he went to prison. Still a great friend in my book. Nobody's perfect. 🤘
What about boxer Nigel Benn? That’s probs the saddest.. just cause he survived but had suffered half veg. The rest of his left with the loss of all support from companies that once backed him
I met Tommy Morrison in 2003 at a night club I was bouncing at in Hattiesburg, MS. His wife's best friend was getting deployed from camp shelby and they came to see her off. We hung out and drank with him all night, super nice guy.
If you consider steroids worthy of rating. I bet Ronnie Coleman could have knocked Morrison's head CLEAN OFF, but obviously he could never make the test.
I was a bartender at a nightclub in Biloxi, Ms and Tommy was in town for a week for a fight. He came in the club every night and could barely walk because the women were all over him. He was jacked af and looked like a golden god but was really down to earth and treated everybody like a friend. He drank like a fish and would be wasted by closing time which was 2:00 am. He drank double gin and orange juice. Can't imagine how horrendous his hangovers had to be. Easy to understand how he came down with hiv and stds. The women went insane over him.
Yeh he sure seemed to have it all…I remember rocky five came out my first year in college and I was trying to go out with this girl and for some reason all she talked about was him….he was only about three years older than I was…..he was a handsome guy and he was handsome in a really particular way, he seemed to have it all, even after all these years it’s painful to look back on how it ended…
Tommy was a good friend of mine. We have a video on you tube together working mitts at my old condo.. He had it all and lost it all in such little time..but he was honestly one of the nicest dudes ever..and had tremendous punching power. When I had him over I made him a dozen and a half eggs, bacon and almost an entire loaf of bread. Then not even an hour after that wanted to go to Dominos. Lol He gladly met a few of my friends with open arms and we had great times together. Miss him dearly
He was _absolutely_ on his way to the pinnacle of success. I believe his career was deliberately sabotaged by the evil men in control of the fight game, due to his larger-than-life persona and the threat it posed to the propagation of their 'narrative'. I would like to have the resources to investigate his entire life and every person who had an influence in his personal life or control over his money and find names of all the bad people involved. Do you have any odd stories to share, that might shed light on my "conspiracy" theory? Thanks and my most sincere, belated condolences.
I'm sitting here, reading the comments. There are so many people saying how Tommy was a polite, generous guy and that makes me happy. The only person he ever abused was himself. May he rest in peace, my favorite fighter.
When I was in junior high and high school I did golden gloves. I worked out at a gym called "Bell recreation center" in Kansas City, Kansas this would have been when Tommy had about 3-4 pro fights under his belt. Tommy was the only pro fighter that worked out there, and him being from Jay, Oklahoma where my grandfather grew up we kind of hit it off, I was like 14-15 y.o. he helped me develop my left hook (I'm a southpaw) he was just a regular guy, that happened to be able to knock a guy's head clean off their body. Here is a bit of trivia you might not know. At 13 Tommy was competing, at the adult level, in tough man competitions and beating grown ass men. My personal feelings are that he had the absolute best left hook in the heavyweight division period full stop. It is just sad and tragic that he let the partying lifestyle kill his dreams.
I think doing what he did to grown men in those competitions at 13 is almost more impressive than anything in boxing, thats such an uneven matchup and he was still winning
He's saying for girls who want big asses, they get ass implants instead of just doing squats which can lead to ass cancer. Your comment has no correlation to what he actually said and u didnt even quote him right
That Mercer KO was absolutely brutal. Morrison was out on his feet after a left connected and then ate 10 more shots before the ref stepped in. That ref should have been banned from boxing after that.
Morrison had won every round of that fight before the ko too. He just punched himself out. Mercer had a great chin and Tommy didn’t box smart that night
If memory serves he was the same ref who ten years earlier allowed the EXACT same thing to happen to Ken Norton when Cooney trapped him in a corner in a similar way…..check it out, I think it’s the same ref
Tommy Morrison I respect I feel for him and his family I followed him for a lot of years throughout his career from the toughman contest and through his prime a monstrous left hook he was born with tremendous speed tremendous talent a tremendous natural to acting on this big screen he was offered a four picture deal after Rocky v you turned it down to maintain his career in boxing lightning fast. Tremendous power and both hands it hurts my heart to know he did not get to to fill his career as he wanted his two sons are keeping the legacy alive I watched their videos highly impressive rest in peace great warrior for you are missed for your legacy lives on God bless
@@TheGrimmCommoner Yeah at the time, but after Tommy signed with Don King it became much more life imitating art. Tommy was in real life almost a dead ringer for Tommy Gunn, although I will say I never carried Tommy Morrison out of a bar for drinking milk,.
Yup, Exactly. My family knew his team and him as he knew my family in the game and the saying from his team is they always took a sy of relief when they would get him to the arena. The local bar owners would call them and say Come down here and get your boy off the floor before the local news shows up. Wild
FRANKIE FRANK but theirs a big difference Tyson had the potential to become the greatest boxer of all time Tommy at best could’ve become a good heavyweight champion for 3 years
@@hornydolphin7953 your kidding right? Tommy had as much potential as Tyson. He was a party animal and relied soley on his natural boxing ability to bail him out his entire career. Had he been disciplined he would've been a HOF heavyweight period.
@phillip martin Tyson and Morrison are more similar than you think. Both burned out due to their lives out of the ring. Morrison partied hard and did steroids on top of that. His body was taking on a tough workload.
@phillip martin I guess when you're jacked and knocking guys out left and right you feel like God and untouchable. I think the Mercer KO fucked up Morrison's head badly and caused him to go off the deep end like he did with muscle implants, meth addiction, and all that shit. There's a documentary on RU-vid where he was trying to make a comeback in 2007. He was mentally fucked in the head, literally.
I agree Chris, joe is so popular yet no one complains about this. That particular (or more aptly peculiar) characteristic is indeed torture. When I’m not in the mood to be annoyed (because it does) I can’t watch and just turn it off. Why doesn’t someone get in his ear about it- I guess cos not enough people tell him or feel this way. But well said!
@iamthebroker The reason they avoid putting the video in the screen or audio, is because RU-vid constantly took their videos down because of copyright.
RobertBaratheon305 fair call and didn’t think about that. Perhaps others that do do it have cleared the copyright issue and those that haven’t at least don’t watch it in front of us and react as they do- I think that’s the naturally annoying thing. I’d prefer they just reference it without watching it.... but thanks for the explanation.
@iamthebroker I agree it’s very annoying. This channel is so big that they can’t get away with any infringements. Rogan talks about it on the podcast all the time.
@@longdays5705 Yeah I was actually searching the comments to see if anyone points out this fact and once again Joe Rogan has no clue about boxing!! :P U know what im saying.Nah guys Tommy wasnt only a champ..he was a great champ 4 me at least.GO check it out he was the HW champion or a HW champion
allthough i think this was the only title he ever had ..but i think he held it twice(NOt 100 percent sure though) relax ma boy we all know back in the day WBO wasnt major but now it is and 1st point im sure Joe has no idea if it was minor or major he hasent even seen 1 fight of Tommy(except his first loss of course) 2nd point :All HWs who have held the WBO are considered former champs whether we like it or no (DO NOT ASK ME BABY ...ASK WIKIPEDIA....ARE you GUYS MORE KNOWLEDGABLE THAN WIKI.com¨??):P XD
There will come a time in your life where you will feel the lowest possible... Being that you're about to go under, but then youll remember these words. Hmmm.
Wow. This really saddens me. I was just talking about Tommy Morrison the other day and was wondering about what he was up to nowadays. Had no idea that he lost that badly and fell off the deep end. Wasn't a big fan of Rocky V but Tommy did do a good job playing the bad guy in the end. Really sad to hear how his life ended :(
@@kerambeach he certainly did my friend he lost his boxing license because of it. Once that happened he lost all his so called friends and hangers on. Tommy life is a sad story but mostly self inflicted.
A lot of people overlook it, but Tommy fought a really smart bout against Foreman and actually looked like a solid boxer. Just one more lessen, in this sport, of what could have been. The history of boxing is littered with such lessons.
It's a tragic story, but at the same time he hid his disease and went on to compete against people who had no idea of the risk they were taking. Luckily no one he faced contracted the virus, but that's still inexcusable.
Since then, alot of fight promotions are required by the state to blood test the fighters. I think even WWE has to make their wrestlers take an HIV and Hepatitis blood test.
I met Tommy Morrison's best friend about 7 years ago...he was my weed man for a good 2 years. He told me all kinds of fucked up shit that happened to Tommy. Met tommy a few times, boxed at his gym here in Wichita a time or 2. He tried to recruit me but I was well past wanting to be a boxer anymore. He seemed like a nice guy. RIP Tommy

Thank god Joe at least knows what he is talking about…. These other clowns have no business talking about boxing when they haven’t got a clue about it! Tommy was not only a complete savage in the ring, dude was a humble, hard working guy. Big up Joe for being the only one to say anything credible
I grew up in KCMO and I was able to witness Tommy spar @ authentic boxing club. His punches sounded like fastballs at a MLB game. He had great combinations, especially body to head. My dad was a veteran and befriended his chief sparring partner, Brian " BamBam " Scott. I won't bother with the negative talk about HIV,partying, etc. Tommy is a product of the game. I felt like he was a wasted potential, but I am grateful that I got to witness him in his prime.
There are darker secrets like the tragedy of the man that was sonny Liston... joe Louis vs the irs. Everything that happened to tommy Morison was his fault. No one else to blame.

Muhammad Ali being the pedophile that he was is a bigger secret I'd say.
Have seen every Morrison fight possible. Was so bummed when he had his first loss and of course his KO loss to Mercer too. Kind of figured he would lose to Lewis. Was a huge fan of Tommy's. #TCB
@@douglasjay9561 They are also making fun of Morrison’s looks, yet look at them, fat, bald, and that skinny dude looks like a Walker from the Walking Dead, lol.
Tommy Morrison was the second biggest waste of raw talent and potential in heavyweight boxing. He had top tier fundamental skills, great flexibility, fluidity, balance, timing and coordination. he had other worldly knockout power in both hands, and his left hook was probably the greatest of all time. He knew how to throw that damn left hook, both long range and short range. A superb offensive fighters(one of the greatest in terms of offensive capability). What he did not have were the three D's- discipline, direction and dedication to his craft. Tommy loved to party, and he partied all the time. He never focused after a point, on boxing. He partied literally all day, all year, and it not only stunted and eventually stopped his career, but it also killed him. Its just such a sad story. He could have been so great!
@Iceman 23 Riddick Bowe. He could have been the greastest of all time. He had everything- size, reach, height, strength, cardio, chin, the ability to box from the outside and was such a great inside fighter for a man of his size. But he was focussed only for the Holyfield fight, he just wasted his time and overate apart from that and did not focus. Its sad really, he really had all the tools and the ability to be an all time great(he kinda still is but you get my point). The Bowe who fought Holyfield in the first fight could have beaten any heavyweight to ever live imho.
Tommy was a hell of a fighter, made it to the top and definitely had his demons. Sad turn towards the end of his life, that Ray Mercer fight was the start of the end. Also, Ari is a bitch.
Reznik did a great little tribute video called Tommy Morrison - The Rising Sun. The Grave shots are sad. Gone too soon, Duke. His life could be made into a Hollywood movie. Supposedly related to John Wayne, girls getting his number, two wives, steroid use (he wasn't the only one..) and was in a Hollywood picture.
I'm with Razor Ruddock at Sully's gym in Toronto ask for Tulio l know for a fact he would love to be on Joe's pod cast he tells me funny stories about him and Tyson and other fighters. So if anyone knows Joe call Sully's gym and thanks for replays guys
Tommy Morrison was a great fighter..he just had some personal issues and did not find his way out...it could happen to anyone...we are all just one bad decision away from sinking..
I looked it up. Mercer was actually 48. Sylvia was 33 then. I just don't like hearing multiple times that Sylvia was "past his prime" like it's an excuse for him. I'm not "offended". I just disagree with the point. I know fighters peak and prime at different ages, but Mercer was 15 years older, and I'd argue 48 vs 33 isn't the same as say 36 vs 21.
@Dee Gee How could everything be accurate when he didn't even get Mercer's age right? Gee, Dee, that was easy enough to disprove. Onto further facts, can you link me to a source that says 315? I can link you to one that says 310.6. Not a big difference, but a difference. Again, a little inaccurate. I won't dispute Sylvia being chinny by that point, and certainly being that way can accelerate a fighter's decline beyond the expected fade from slowed reflexes, etc. I know it isn't an exact science. But let's get back to facts. Sylvia was champion of the UFC until March 2007. Yes, he'd lost three of four going into the Mercer fight, but the losses were to Couture, Big Nog, and Fedor. At that time most fighters on the planet would have been doing good to go anything other than 0-3 to those three. Randy dirty boxed Gonzaga after that before getting Brock'd, so don't excuse Captain America. He'd only fought one fight in a promotion outside the UFC, and had fought in the UFC as recently as 2008. He might have been run out of the major promotion, but he fought Fedor who was considered the top heavy in the world by many even then. Mercer hadn't fought for a world title since a 2002 loss to Wlad Klitschko seven years earlier. Unless you're going to drum up Mercer as having had some kickboxing K1 MMA success he totally wasn't by the time of the Sylvia fight, he was near a whole decade past relevance, and that's putting it generously, not someone who'd held the world championship just the year before last at the time of the fight, like Sylvia. In fact, I just double checked (something you should do more of before you debate me) and the last time Mercer won a world title bout was in 1991, and WBO was even more fringe then, a notch below the big 3 ABC belts. 18 years before 2009. Tim Sylvia defended the UFC belt in November 2006. Jeff Monson wasn't any worse than the cans and unproven prospects Mercer ran up a 6-2 boxing record against after the 2002 demolition at the hands of Klitschko. I'm not denying Sylvia was well past his best at the time of the Mercer fight. I never have. But to only talk about one guy being "washed up" and not the other? Again, the other guy hadn't won a world title fight in 18 years, and hadn't fought for one in seven. It's great Mercer likes MMA. So do I. But part of the reason he left boxing in the first place, regardless of what he says, is that the money fights had dried up for him since they weren't fights he could win. Sylvia was dumb to trade with Mercer and agree to a fight that minimized his chance of success. Even Kimbo knew better to bull rush Mercer and get Merciless off his feet first. Sure, Sylvia went on the regional circuit AFTER the Mercer loss, but what did Mercer do after that? Nothing.
When I was in the Air Force, guy in the next dorm room was from Maysville, AR (right on the AR / OK border). One time he showed us a school yearbook (not sure what school), and Tommy Morrison was in his yearbook. I was like, "Dude! You went to school with Tommy Morrison!". This was back when Morrison was a big deal in boxing still.
I really think that if Mercier had stopped punching him after he was out, or the ref had stopped the fight earlier, Tommy Morrison life wouldn't have been so tragic after this.
Very sad tale of Morrison. With that being said, totally inaccurate to say he was a good boxer up until Rocky V ruined him. Tommy was an unproven prospect before the film, and almost all his success came after the movie, including beating George Foreman and becoming world champ.
@@frizzyred1292 not really man, he was already in pretty serious decline and he knew it. He tried to get a fight or two in west Virginia where they didn't require blood testing for fighters but no one was really willing to fight him and take that chance with an ex champion or a chance on getting HIV for chicken scraps and I think it just fizzled out from there. He was a nice guy, I felt like he knew he was in pretty serious decline and just wanted to mentor someone and feel like he was making the most of what he had left
What was the deal with him passing all those HIV tests after the first one and then the boxing commission saying he was never diagnosed in the first place and overturning the suspension? This dude might have died from meth and the pec and bicep implants. Not sure.
I think he died from cardiac arrest. He did plenty of tests in the 2000’s for HIV and they were all negative. No idea how the 1996 test came back positive but I think that’s still being investigated.
