No, They should have kept the BCS. The SEC was so dominant that other conferences wanted a change. People were crying so much. Now, it's gotten worst. If they went to 8, the others left out would be crying.

First Things First: Cris Carter and Nick Wright EXPAND!!!! the sponsors will pay for family tkts and then u could can shorten the regular season by one week. Any given GameDay. Bama could have been a 6-8 seed and then would go to Clemson or Ohio State first round. That would be great!!!!

Perhaps a compromise between the systems? A 6 team playoff of the power 5 conference champions and 1 at-large bid. The top 2 seeds get to rest while the other 4 teams play, with the 3 and 4 seeds getting home games.

6 teams just like the NFL. 5 power conference champs and the highest ranked non-power 5. Wildcards played at campus site 3 and 4 seed gets home field advantage.

The biggest problem with the playoff is the fact that group of 5 teams don’t have a chance at the playoff. Let’s say Boise State beat every team they played 60-0, they wouldn’t be in it. That is not fair for the players, coaches, and even the fans, because it is impossible for them to win a Championship or even to get in the playoff.

Ohio State beat teams that ended up finishing 7th, 10th, 22nd, and 24th in the rankings. Alabama beat teams that finished 17th and 23rd. Ohio State played 11 games against Power 5 opponents while Alabama played 9. Ohio State had 10 wins over Power 5 opponents, and Alabama had 8. Ohio State played 5 road games and Alabama played 4. The loss to Iowa is the only blemish on the Ohio State resume. When comparing the two resumes, Ohio State's blows Alabama's away. A resume is supposed to highlight the redeeming qualities of a team (think about your resume that you apply to jobs with), not the warts. Ohio State easily has a better resume than Alabama. I would also ask you this... If Ohio State had replaced their nonconference game with Oklahoma with Akron (and beaten them), they would be 12-1. Would Ohio State be in the playoff if that was the case? What this tells me is that you need to schedule easy games outside your league.

That’s why I push for 9 conference games and 2 non conference opponents that is on your level (power 5 or group of 5). That way Alabama or other big dogs have to schedule 11 of 12 opponents against power 5 teams and can’t get away with multiple cupcakes (especially in the penultimate week of the regular season)

I had already considered what Joel Klatt suggested. I'm glad that the 2 division structure came up because the two best teams in a conference rarely play in the conference championship game because of the 2 division structure. Ohio State last year is the perfect example. They could keep the divisions for ease of scheduling, but rank the teams across the entire conference rather than within the division. Top 2 go to the championship game. I hope this does change though. In the system Joel suggests, conference championship games ARE semi-final games.

Technically Alabama is tied for 1st in SEC -- Alabama 11-1, 1 Conference loss [Auburn] Georgia 12-1, 1 Conference loss [Auburn] Auburn 10-3, 2 Conference loss [Georgia AND LSU]

Chris burks Exactly FCS and D2 schools have has a 4 round playoff system for a while now. And even going back to high school teams that make it to state play 15 games in a year

I usually agree with Joel klatt but once he admits he wants to put conference champs in playoff and leave the worst conference champ out contradicts everything else he says. I'm sorry but leaving a conference championship out of the playoff is a big gigantic problem no matter how you slice it. I don't care if you think 8 team playoff isn't a good idea because of such and such reasons, but it isn't any worse than leaving out that fifth team. Joel says he wants the teams to prove it on the field, but at the same time he wants to take a team away from proving themselves on the field. Joel klatt remove the elephant from your room, please.

One thing I haven't seen people consider is, if Bama didn't have to win their conference in order to make the playoffs, then how come Wisconsin didn't make it? Wisconsin had a better point differential in their loss (Alabama lost to 6 Auburn by 12 in regular season, Wisconsin lost by 6 to 8 OSU in the conference championship) Wisconsin had a better schedule than Alabama Wisconsin actually finished the regular season undefeated and have a better record overall than Alabama Neither won their conference, but Wisconsin actually won their division Wisconsin was 9-1 in their conference, Alabama was 7-1 Wisconsin loses and goes down in ranking (as expected), but Alabama doesn't even play and gets moved up Wisconsin played better than Alabama did in their regular season ranked games Wisconsin had more road games and played better on those as well (Alabama only had one road game where they won by more than 10 points, and that was against Vanderbilt; Wisconsin won all of their road games by at least 14 or more points)

Joe Klatt everybody average now because Ohio St didn't getting in by beating your most consistent team Wisconsin. Then you say take out the worst conference champion and put in a better team which is basically what the committee did this year and last year base off the eyetest. Joe Klatt the system is what it is so let's be real losses matter over championship as long as you are a name. Championships matter when your not a name according to the committee the last four years the playoffs been around.

KLATT is exactly right. Commitee blantantly LIED thru their teeth. ESPN and Saban have total control off playoffs. Which is why Saban was on GameDay and every ESPN talk show Saturday preaching that HIS team should be in. TOTAL BS! Auburn spanks Goergia and BAMA in the regular season and because of an extra game they get to watch BOTH bama and georgia play in the Semi finals.!!!!

6 teams top 2 get a bye. Power 5 conference winners and 1 wildcard can be from any conference. This gives non power 5’s a chance to get in without putting to many “average resumes” in the playoff. Plus it puts more emphasis on the regular season to finish top 2. Win win win win Joel Klatt

Conference Champion only matters when teams have the same record. Look at last year Ohio State got in over Penn St (Who won Conference Champion and beat Ohio State Head To Head) Why was this not issue last year. Also do not want Conference Champion to be only way to get in. Sorry Ohio State don't lose by 31 Points to an unranked Iowa. If Alabama lost to Mississippi State by 30 Points they would not have even been in conversation. Also if you Do Conference Champions There is zero reason to play any Quality Teams. Ohio State played 6 Teams with a losing record.

Joel Klatt is such a hypocrite. Because Ohio State is out he thinks scoreboards and keeping score is now not important. The scoreboard is what kept the mighty OSU out this year. A 31 point loss to a 7-5 Iowa team kept them out, plain and simple. What is so hard to understand about that? Had Alabama lost by 31 to a Missouri team, I'd say the same about them. Also, UCF is going to get skull drug in their bowl game by Auburn. It's like the media has amnesia or something. Did everyone conveniently forget about Florida destroying Cincinnati in 2009? Yeah, that was a group of 5 undefeated team too.

Boss Man no what he was saying is that it doesn’t really matter how many wins or losses you have but rather by a subjective view of who’s better, the committee has no set system to place these teams and therefore there is always going to be biased. He’s not a hypocrite honestly out of all the CF analysts Joel Klatt is for sure one of my favorites

And the point that it gives the big schools a lot more leeway in losses so they’ll schedule harder and more entertaining games, it sounds like the viewer and the teams would benefit by better games

Every time someone comments about Clemson, it's always "but Syracuse, Syracuse"… it's like they didn't even watch that game, saw the score, and ignored every other game. So if Clemson beats your team, what does that say about your team????

every major programs schedule one major marquee game and a bunch of cream puffs for there ooc schedule. Alabama last 3 years has opened the against marquee opponents the last 3 years. Wisconsin, USC, Florida State. Ohio state has schedule cream puffs this year outside of Oklahoma. Ohh army so scary. Unlv, stop before I have nightmares. And if you had listened to nick saban you would had heard that he thinks all power 5 teams should play equal amounts of other power 5 games. Every team has 2-3 games that are jokes. Saban has said that they should do away with those and play other power 5 conference games that fans want to see.

Chris Lang I would like to point out that Klatt was heavily against OSU getting in Over Penn last year and didn't deserve so he isnt pro OSU. CC is i agree but Klatt is consistent with his point you should need to win your conference to be in the discussion. I'm not here to argue just pointing out Klatt is very consistent with his argument.

6 Team Playoff: 1. Clemson (Bye) 2. Oklahoma (Bye) 3. Georgia vs 6. Wisconsin/Auburn/USC 4. Alabama vs 5. Ohio State 3v6 and 4v5 played after army vs navy and are rotated between 6 minor bowls (Citrus, Outback, Alamo, Music City, Belk, texas) every 3 years just like the semifinals. This would make it much more easier to have all conferences represented along with conference champions and only 4 teams have to play an extra game

You can argue that all 4 of the top 4 teams have weak resumes. The top 3 all have BAD losses. Bama is the only loss that is respectable yet, that's the only one people are crying about.

It’s not a perfect system, but I like the 4-team playoff. It’s just really hard to judge. Auburn did seem to get penalized for winning the Iron Bowl, because they had to play Georgia... again. But Alabama also was also in a tough spot, not because they lost, but when they lost in the season.

Randomness Report really I think all conference champs should have a spot.. So they have to up the amount of teams. Maybe up to 6 teams (1 wild card based off of rankings) and the #1 and #2 have a bye during the first week. I've never been a fan of the top 25 ranking system. It is so easy to manipulate it to get certain teams in, as what the committee did for Alabama. Putting miss st and Fresno st in to give them two extra ranked wins when neither of those teams were really deserving

Alabama was ranked number one most of the year.that is what it is.its not like Alabama came out of nowhere. Regardless of their schedule,they blew out everybody up to the LSU game. Yes they lost 4 starting linebackers in one game...against LSU. Since then they are a lot less intimidating.that is life in the SEC. tough physical play every week..ohio state doesn't play a single game of this intensity in a decade.

"The sec is an average conference this year." Then how come there are 2 sec teams in the college playoffs? Or let's say bama got to stay at number 5. Then 2 in the top 5. Sec is still a powerful conference. It just isn't as powerful as it use to be. The solution isn't to always add more spots to the playoffs. Cause if that's the case, then what's happens if another argument happens just like this one occurs?

Johnnie Hart youve got to understand 98% of college football players arent making it into the NFL. So they need the education not the coaches. If a player goes to a college for a coach thats an insanely bad idea since the best thing most players get out of college is an education they can usr if the get a career ending injury or if they are one of the 98% who dont make it to the NFL.

okay, so big ten is a good conference right? incorrect. Ohio State beat penn state who was ranked so highly because they didn’t play anybody and the same goes for beating Wisconsin. Michigan State didn’t play anybody and lost to Northwestern and Notre Dame. Michigan was not good this year, they played 4 ranked teams and lost to them all. Arguments that the Big Ten is the best conference just doesn’t make sense when the schedule shows for all the teams that they don’t play anybody, and please before you make a comment, go look at the schedules for all the big ten teams and then try to argue.

so a team has to win their conference to go to playoffs but . what about teams not in the power 5 and are undefeated such as ucf . you exclude them because their not in the power 5? i think 6 team playoff is better

Antonio howard I think with teams like UCF there has to be some sort of track record which sucks. With these power 5 schools a goer term memory from year to year is necessary but these smaller schools are a different story if ucf goes undefeated against they for sure should get in. But they would still have to beat some competitive teams which is hard to do in their conference. It feels wrong to leave them out but it feels wrong to put them in at this point. I think western Michigan last year was probably a better team than UCF this year too.

UCF is a conference champion. He didn't specifically say a Power 5 conference champion. Winning the AAC would make them eligible to be one of the 4 but they still wouldn't make it. His plan actually makes it slightly easier to get a Group of 5 team in, but still doesn't give an automatic berth.

Imagine if instead of Alabama playing some no name team in a non conference they play Ohio State and boom no problem. No matter the outcome you have that over the losing team and you therefore get to say you beat every other team they beat by default. i.e. Alabama beats Ohio state but since ohio beat penn and Wisconsin Alabama is over them by default to. Its basic knowledge but they always go after the playoffs in the post season but never look at the problem before when they can first it. Its Simple : Find a way to balance the schedule of these teams. Even if Alabama goes off to loss to Auburn now then they still have that win over another team and a Legit chance. Of Course Ohio probably wouldn't go to play Wisconsin it would be Penn state and if Penn State wins it still don't matter bc OSU beat Penn and Alabama beat OSU. And if Wisconsin wins then it doesn't matter bc the are undefeated so no fuss there. Maybe I'm wrong but there gotta be a better way of balancing the strength of schedule.

every major programs schedule one major marquee game and a bunch of cream puffs for there ooc schedule. Alabama last 3 years has opened the against marquee opponents the last 3 years. Wisconsin, USC, Florida State. Ohio state has schedule cream puffs this year outside of Oklahoma. Ohh army so scary. Unlv, stop before I have nightmares. And if you had listened to nick saban you would had heard that he thinks all power 5 teams should play more power 5 schools. Every team has 2-3 games that are ringers. Saban has say he want those done away with and switch with power 5 conference matchups that fans want to see.

6 teams!!! 6! It's gets everything Joel wants (must win your Conference) and adds one group of 5 conference Champion. It give the little guy a shot...that is all they want right? 4 teams play while the top 2 have a bye to the Semis. Why is this soooo hard?? 8 would again lead to more BS...if winning your conference didn't matter. So this really is about taking power out of the committees hands and placing it squarely on the playing field......were it obviously belongs. This WHOLE committee was designed to get 2 teams from the SEC into the playoff....and this year was the scenario. That is bad for College Football....and very short sighted by the SEC. At the end of the day I'd rather have the committee up there picking one group of 5 Champion and the seeding for the Power 5. Not comparing BS to try and put 2 schools from the same conference in the playoff.

Why not just have a 5 team playoff since there are 5 power conferences. Mid December 4 vs 5 New Year's Eve or Day depending on what day of the week Semifinal: 1 vs 4/5 Semifinal: 2 vs 3 Ten days later National Championship Game The conference championships serve as an unofficial quarterfinal. Keep the committee around so that they can seed the teams. Seeding happens according to resumes which include OOC games, major wins, eye test, etc.

I like this a lot too. But I also like the idea of a Group of 5 team getting a shot every year. If not why even consider them FBS teams if they have litteraly NO chance at a National Championship? Allow a Group of 5 Champ in the playoff or don't and create a whole other playoff for the Group of 5.

I understand what you're saying. I personally don't need to see that, because I know that Western Michigan or UCF or Boise can't compete with Clemson or Alabama most years. I'm not opposed to your idea. I'd rather see that 6th team be an at large selection.

I believe Nick’s system is the best system. Joel and Cc are making these very poor arguments. Parents traveling is not a concern. Student athletes have been going to school and playing sports their whole lives, studying at this point should not be an issue. Also better CF with an 8 playoff game system very portion of the US has a chance to win. Instead of a southern dominant P.F. we have now

Without the Iowa loss Ohio State has one of the best resumes we’ve seen in the CFP era. Alabama has one of the worst resumes to ever make it in. Bama’s best win is Mississippi State.... and they really struggled against them. Ohio State has 2 wins over top 10 teams and a absolute slaughter of a team at a similar level to Mississippi State, yes the Iowa loss is terrible but Alabama’s beaten no one compared to the other playoff teams Oklahoma has beaten OSU, OSU, and TCU, Clemson beat Miami, and auburn. Georgia beat auburn. Again the Iowa loss is bad but at some point the wins have to outweigh a loss.

There are more than 4 conferences , Big 10 & PAC 12, are all big featured money making conferences. Rankings are subjective to so much. These teams are not all that strong..... These guys are stretching for Ohio St. and are haters...Ask any team who you want to play and it is BAMA.

I don't understand why nobody recognizes that bama may have had a bad season but they played well. But they lost 6 of their top linebackers. This left Alabama's defense shattered. This is one of the biggest reasons why Bama's quality of play was so poor in the last few weeks. In the Auburn game bama would have played better if they had their linebackers. So I really think the committee made a good decision cause bama didn't lose 31 points to a unranked team

Alabama on the other hand have blown out everyone they have played with the exception of miss state and auburn. The salt is so real. Its fine to be so jelly that your team/conference isn't as good as bama is. The only real dynasty in recent history

They just destroyed the football story of the team that fought to get to the championship, go on to the national and win. This story is about the team who fought to get to the championship, only to have politics steal their shot away from them. This CFPC just put two SEC teams in a championship play off that originally said the teams would come from the winners of individual championships. 2 loss Alabama loss to Auburn but jumped Auburn for the golden ticket. Politics. Alabama was overrated in the beginning of the season and OU was underrated. The Oklahoma Sooners grew. That is the essence of a team starting to gel as the season went on. CFPC has done a bad thing that has at its worst shown a need to abolish it and at best shown its deliberate bias. It all comes down to, they did not believe in the system they had established.

Liam G Who is the best team? The one who wins their conference. If you want to sit there and debate who the best teams are then you can make a case for anyone in the top 10(hence the natural bias). Picking Conference Champions is the most objective way of doing it. Want in? Win.

Look I hate Bama just as much as the next guy but what is complaint? OSU not only had 2 losses, 1 was a blowout to a very average Iowa team. Had that been their only loss, sure. Had they lost to OU and let's say MSU, sure. But not when 1 of their 2 losses is by 31 points to an average team. I'm sorry but OSU does not deserve it. Alabama was #1 all year, lost their final game to Auburn #6. Let's move on.

I don't think it matters that WIS beat Iowa. That is more of a reflection of how OSU did not deserve the playoff considering they have 2 losses and were blown out by Iowa who was 7-5. I'm not some Bama slappy, I just think they were the right choice and not OSU.

People are complaining this year because of how weak Alabama’s schedule is. Plus they moved up without even playing a game. OSU moved back a spot last year and they had a much better resume and had more of a flukey loss than Bama did this year
