Johann Stamitz deserves more fame and recognition today. He truly was a great composer of his era and highly influential in the development of the early Classical period
The Stamitz family is one of the important pioneer in the development of the early classical period before 'the big three' (Haydn , Mozart , Beethovem) from Vienna.
Stamic sr., the father of classical music who revolutionarized the orchestra and playing styles wrote already pieces in the so called "mozartian style" before Mozart was even born!
Good comment, Jean-Baptiste!!! Johann Stamitz was an innovator in his time. He is considered the founder of the Mannheim School. Stamitz incorporated two clarinets into the ranks of the woods, and this resource spread rapidly throughout Europe. In addition, the orchestra he directed was considered the most expressive of his time. This is possibly due to the fact that Stamitz used to direct from his place of concertmaster (controlling and giving directions to all the strings), while the usual technique in all the orchestras was to direct from the Harpsichord.
@@RobertoPintos thanks for this information! I guess that is one of the differences between baroque and classical playing. However, i think the harpsichord is a very good instrument for (conducting) small ensembles even if the result is more static and less vivacious.
