John Carpenter is a genius and during this period of time he was on a goddamn roll making classic film one after the other. EFNY, Halloween, The Thing, They Live are all some of my most favorite films.
15:17 - what an incredibly pithy comment by Carpenter, and remarkably in contrast to the ensuing 25 years of popular culture since the time of this interview. Now, instead of waiting a few years for something to be considered classic (as Carpenter rightly suggests we should do), the "instant classics" pop up every 5 minutes. and in reality there's been a handful of American movies made since the 2000s that people will remember as being significant in 25 years. there's no concern for timelessness or durability because our films - like our music - are our technology now. it's how something is made rather than how or why it means that people care about today. Sad.
If you think about it we're living in those times now...An the opening of the movie with the plane going towards the trade center was eerie since this movie came out in 81 82 an the towers going down in 2001 the same way....John Carpenter is one of my favorite directors
I found this movie on VHS in my local library around 1987-88 and watched it with my friends about 50 times going into the 90s. We still talk about this movie to this day and quote random lines.
An also the gulf fire fell from the towers like some ppl did in the attacks R.I.P to everyone who lost their lives on that day🙏🙏but i took a lot from this movie because it mirrors now times police state prison industrial complex China, Russia, tracking an tracing this Movie covered it all almost 40 years ago. ALL STAR CAST WAS BRILLIANT the music the beats Escape from New York is my shit
3:29 and this is why nobody will ever match the atmosphere this movie had imo. Well, part of the reason, but a large part. Also Cabbie kinda stole the show imo, so good job Nick lol.
I recall from ivory tower grad school Rand or Brookings did a white paper/thought experiment on militarization and federalization of police and making Wyoming the only level 6 maxi max for USA and my student peers looking at me laughing when I referred to EFNY. This was 1994....so ahead of its time.
I am about 2 years older than JC is in this interview 1994 and he still looks 20 years older than I do now.He aged poorly, like reverse Benjamin Button....so odd.But he is one of my top 5 directors of all time..really top 2 or 3.
He should have included the pre credit sequence of Snake Plisskan robbing the bank. The scene is important in establishing what the character is all about.
This movie is actually prophetic in nature. Liberals, leftist, socialists and Biden's policies are already turning Manhattan into "Escape From New York".
Not just Manhattan ... but also San Francisco, Portland, Detroit, LA, Chicago, and many more. Many major US cities are starting to look like 3rd world African or Asian cities. Also, modern police forces look at lot like the police in this movie ... bulky dark black uniforms and armed to the teeth.
I was shocked when I realized that a Isaac Hayes was doing the role of The Duke, for a 1981 movie, it was extremely extremely rare that an African American had a role of such power, being the absolute leader of NY crime world.
I think this film along with its sequel escape from LA, big trouble in little china, they live, vampires, starman, ghosts of mars and the thing are the best films I’ve seen from John carpenter.
im pretty sure most people who have seen this film would agree it is a GREAT FILM of its time and still is a great film,I still have it on my iTunes library and still watch it from time to time
This is a masterpiece . Original old school movie. 1981. It should be left alone, no remake. Another time another era. Good actors. Kurt Russell as snake plisken .
9:15 a western !!! Odyssey Against authority figure and criminal A lone gun slinger Action science fiction Starman Mouth of madness Assault on Precint 13 Disney Elvis ! Asexual!
where do i find the cut scene from the robbery with the quality that they show on this documentary ? because i just did found a blue one low quality of some Mbs
Am I wrong to want a reboot of this movie? I have thought of several ways to do it. 1: completely CGI Snake Pliskin as his young original self and have Kurt Russel do the voice. 2: make it an animated movie. 3. All the characters are exact look-alikes and must voice train to sound exactly like the originals. I feel like it needs the modern effects of today. SO many ideas you could add!
I'd much rather have a brand new original movie with the spirit of movies like Escape From New York, these days studios are obsessed with remaking and rebooting just to cash in on whatever they happen to own the rights to instead of funding smaller original movies from unknown directors.
