John Carpenter is a legend of filmmaking. His movies and his legacy will be remembered for a long long time. I sometimes wonder if he realises how much fans like myself love his movies and his genius.
@TheGooners11 I totally agree with you and I wrote the same concept some time ago! "They Live" a republican metaphor??? C'mooon John! I'm not sure I buy that!!! Anyway "Big Trouble In Little China" It's my cult film! JC is great!
Loved it! John Carpenter is clearly bored in a lot of interviews he does these days, but he seemed to be enjoying this one. And he even said he might direct again... loved hearing that from the man himself
My favorite director of all time. I love the atmosphere all his movies have, and the fact the he performed almost all of his soundtracks is insane. Each movies theme is incredibly memorable and fits the atmosphere perfectly
This is great. Jones isn't doing the usual cowtowing that most interviewers do, and I think that makes Carpenter more at ease. He doesn't seem as agitated!
Carpenter is the last of a dying breed of old school horror greats. I wish he was still making movies but I am glad that he is enjoying his second career as a rock god of synth.
@curiositytax9360 Ah! A Cronenberg crony, eh?. Lost interest in Cronenberg after Naked Lunch. Especially when his next movie after that was M.Butterfly which sounded like the crying game minus the cool Boy George song. Got too artsy-fartsy for me...
@@robzilla730 haha a Cronenberg crony. I don’t care about Cronenberg. I don’t really like his films. Doesn’t mean they aren’t good. You said he sold out but it’s the complete opposite. Carpenter sold out. He just directed some shit tv show from his couch. It was shot in Prague. And he sits around all day playing shit video games and watching sport. That’s the life of someone who has creatively given up. Carpenter never evolved. This is why during the 90’s his work starts to stick out like a sore thumb and is rather embarrassing. He now plays concerts with his kid of all his old music. Gimps turn up dressed as Michael Myers and dance around to the Halloween theme. He wants to direct but can’t because he’s completely out of touch with everything. Artsy fartsy? Your the reason we have all this marvel dog shit. He’s just made films and not rehashed. Did it in his own way. That’s not artsy. It takes balls, something your probably missing. They aren’t artsy fartsy haha. Your probably just abit dim. You should stick to sweaty embarrassing conventions full of gremlin people who eat pizza and talk about Halloween and the horror fandom. Of course your a gamer or proudly call yourself a gamer. Your addicted to an elaborate slot machine and use it to fill the void of your empty life.
Talking about being invisible, we write our destinies or are given us, his film Memoirs Of An Invisible Man comes to mind, there's so much of this director in his films, I can relate to that invisibility, and that's okay, what's better, being loved by everyone only later finding out how fake their love was or just finding those few right people around us who we know their love is real, we all are unique, and not everyone can see us for who are. Yea probably like most Carpenter's work, only few of us have the eyes to see what and who is there for us.
Mid seventies Watford Town Hall, The Sensational Alex Harvey Band. Me and half the audience, arms across eachothers shoulders on the stage singing Tomorrow Belongs to Me. Those were the day's. Never forgot that gig. Brilliant.
This was a decent interview. The one glaring missed opportunity was a chance to ask John Carpenter about one of his best films: Assault on Precinct 13. It has a perfect mix of story, acting chops, and one of the best soundtracks of any 70's flick. Some great lines too.
Agreed went with my brother to see it at the Cinema not knowing anything about it loved it music was awesome and I was well impressed when I discovered later JC wrote music ,directed and many other roles in AoP 13
Alan I saw him in Manchester over here in England and it was one of the best nights of my life, let alone one of the best concerts! It was a few days before Halloween too, so there were lots of cool costumes, too. I've not felt so at home since Motörhead gigs. If you get the chance, you have to go!
I've grown to really love Jonesy. He's so natural with his chat, genuinely interested, has seen a lot of stuff in his life, and I appreciate a real London accent. Sometimes he's just like a cab driver too, but a really interesting one. :)
Jonesy is really interested in this interview. He is asking great questions and is bringing up great stuff. Surprised Carpenter is not a Cinephile and thinks 2001 is boring.
You feel that way? I thought it seemed like Jonesy wasn't super familiar with his stuff and pretty much ran out of stuff to ask him like 2/3 of the way thru. I agree though im surprised John doesn't like 2001
I think Carpenter should come back and direct a sequel to Halloween, just to prove to those in doubt, that nobody can recreate a masterpiece like he could. Even though most of us already know how tops he really is. And also the 40+ years of those of us who always remembered how scared we were the first time we had heard about it, and maybe had come across the trailer on tv, while hiding under whatever was around. Spine chilling. If he would just immerse himself into the score, and write a innovative story, and bring in new tricks, it could be legendary.
It's crazy how drastic his voice has changed in the last 20 years. He used to have a high and clean voice. He sounded absolutely nothing like he does today. I hear he smokes cigars like a chimney.
They Live is a must see film. The film works on 2 levels. There's the space alien shoot 'em up side, but there's also the critique of 80s consumerism. The sunglasses (Albert Hoffmann lenses) are an allegory for LSD. 'Phew, it's like a drug, but you come down hard' says Roddy Piper's character when taking off the glasses. Watch the film again.
of course an amazing director but as a musician he is my hero!! Seeing him and his band on Halloween, playing Halloween, in a crowd with hundreds of people dressed as Michael Myers! best gig memory ever
Steve Jones, John Carpenter, and only now the YT algorithm kicks in. So funny to see the rapport between these top guys - JC knows Jonesy is nobody's fool and enjoys himself here!
One of my favourtie musicians interviews my favourite director! Curious/disappointing that they don't seem to know THAT much about each other. TRIVIA FACT (which I'm willing to bet neither of them knows) American Actor JIm Jetter played a Police Officer in "Assault on Precinct 13" AND "Martin Boreman" in "The Great Rock n Roll Swindle"! He was UNCREDITED in both roles....
Gay? Hahaha. A disgusting jingoist racist, yes.I don't believe gay. Although The Duke did walk like he got fucked up the ass by a walrus every morning.
lol. not sure on that one. see the movie "Repo Man" special features on that controversy. or this:ianundercover.com/2009/02/13/iuc-exclusive-the-duke-was-the-queen-of-hollywood/
Here is a man that deserves an honorary Oscar for the huge amount of work yes some not to great but others that changed cinema Imagine a catalogue that includes Halloween, the fog , they live , starman , escape from New York, the thing , big trouble in little China a producer on so many movies and helped so many in front and behind the scenes and is such respected by his peers Academy get your act together give this man a lifetime achievement award or an Oscar
Any " Serious Horror Aficionados " Will " Always Be Indebted To John Carpenter For His " Brilliance " Within This Particular Genre !! In Addition too Which Because Of The Relaxed Informal Style Of Steve Jones Other " Experts Within There Chosen Fields " Will Doubtless Be Happy 2 Appear On The Show As Well !!! From Adrian Browne 1965
Way cool....Jonesey is such a natural......John,how about one more Snake Plisskin film where he's living off the grid in Montana near the border,he's beat to shit as the world heaves&convulses to an end....obviously you call it Escape from America!!:)
Tangerines Dream got their name from the "...with tangerines trees..." line from the Beatles "Lucy In the Sky With Diamonds". I find it hard to believe that Carpenter didn't know they were German. Maybe he was feigning ignorance to be cool.
For the record, the Blue Ridge mountains are in North Carolina and Bowling Green is Western Kentucky nowhere near there. Bowling Green is not that far from the Smoky mountains.
