If your snowblower came with this drivegear, drain it right away. I waited for about 20 hours and what came out looked like rust and mud. It's about 4 oz. so I plan to change every 5 hrs.. Has anyone ever removed the auger shaft M157969? I'm trying to find out how to take it out of the Auger drive gear?

I never knew this kit existed, thanks! As of 08/02/2024, the gearbox is $250.00 now, but still think it's a worthy upgrade. I always have trouble with the chain drive on my 47 blower, so it looks like this is the ticket! It is also very common for the blower shell to crack around those 3 bolt holes that the main shaft goes thru due to torque stress. Since this gear case has the 4 bolts around the frame too, that should spread the load and prevent cracks or stop cracks that have already happened from getting worse. I will definitely be getting this kit for my 47 blower and replace all the bearings too. Thanks for posting this!

Thank you for this excellent video. Just finished installing the parallel shaft gear drive. Your instructions are spot on and made it so easy. Takes time but all went well with no problems. The original chain slipped off twice and finally broke without shearing a pin. Dealer said he could not understand how that could happen. Ordered a new chain, which would take 5 days to come in. Was playing around on You Tube and came across your video. Called dealer and cancelled chain and bought the parallel drive on line and had it shipped free in 3 days. The chain gear box was bent out of shape which caused the chain to break. Deere needs to beef up gear boxes. Will take to dealer and show him.

That’s great that everything went well..👍🏼 Thanks for watching the video and I’m glad it helped. Yeah it took some time to swap it out but ya gotta love working on the tractor so it isn’t too bad. 😁 I hated having to constantly spray lube on the chain to try and keep it from rusting which always made a mess. Thanks for the video! Followed step by step. Also needed to use a couple of tips from other commenters. First was removing the bolts from the middle auger brace, then removing 2 bolts from each end of the auger. Leave the top bolt to allow the auger to pivot enough that the carriage bolts behind the impeller drop out, without having to move the whole auger. Also had to lay the blower face down to get the gear case to move enough so that I could insert the 4 bolts securing the gear case. Used a chain hoist to make it easier to wrestle around the blower.

Success with installing the gear box. My test was blowing snow that had fallen off my roof in front of my garage. Thank you very much! Your step by stop instructions were to the letter A to Z. My chain broke, so it gave me the reason to attempt to install the gear box. I will not reveal how long it took me. Just me and my dog, Winston, will know the true time. The most time consuming step was getting the holes to line up when installing the gear box. I finally tipped the blower over so the gear box was on top, it was then that it finally slid in to place. The other time consuming step was removing the spring from the drive shaft. I had a small tap. The half moon was not tapping down low enough, so I filed the sides a bit. Seeing you tap it on with wooden mallet was helpful. Good bye chain and sprocket! Kudos to John Deere for coming out with a better part. I will add this to my DIY list. Thanks again.

Although I always grease all the blower's moving parts religously, the u-joint on my blower driveshaft siezed up and wouldn't straighten out. I ran down to my JD dealer and had to buy the entire driveshaft (supposedly the u-joint isn't replaceable), $344.77 for that, but it was the new upgraded driveshaft with the plastic protective sleeve. I figured while I was there, I'd buy the parallel shaft upgrade if they had one in stock. They had one, unfortunately the price has gone up to $213.85 (the cost of putting it off)! So, my project this weekend is to install the gear drive and replace the driveshaft. The parts weren't inexpensive, but it's a hell of a lot cheaper than a new blower! I'm looking forward to less noise and vibration, and a much cleaner snowblower. I enjoyed your video, it was well done and very informative.

Bought this for my small back deck in the Eastern Sierra. ru-vid.comUgkxoHYZbq5g9fkcAtinlTqstNlje-UQkCHN We get A LOT of HEAVY snow so I was a bit skeptical but it was worth it! After the first storm of the year this has exceeded expectations! It throws snow very well, even 10-12” + that said the more it piles up the harder it is to maneuver the machine. It is exceptionally light weight and overall exactly what I was looking for. If you have a large amount of snow and a lot of area to clear, you may consider something with a drive engine to help maneuverability, but for decks, second stories, roofs etc, you can’t beat the light weight to great snow throwing ratio. Side note, the chute rotator is a bit flimsy and it initially didn’t seem to work, after a few uses it seems to have loosened up.

Glad I don't need the old carriage bolt holes behind the impeller. They are all broken but it made it possible to pull them out without taking out the front bits. Hi, this is my first time ever liking anything online. This video was invaluable, would have taken me a month of Sundays otherwise. Just wanted to add that you do not have to loosen or remove Auger at all. Just loosen the two set screws at the impelller (right near where the shearbolt is) and slide that unit back off the key. Remove the key and slide the impleller itself back ..you can then pull the bolts out so you can place the shaft gear in place. Put the key back etc..but don't tighten the set screws until you have secured the gear drive. BTW..the unit cost me $360 CAD before taxes.

I have removed everything to replace a stripped propeller last season and then a key on shaft. So twice! Much to my wife's, "enough already we need the blower have the dealer fix it, I won man over machine. It was a proud moment when it cracked up and blew the snow. I ordered the parts and just finished installing the enclosed drive. After it was installed and I was checking the sheer pins, I found one simpler step. Loosen the set screws on the arm (part #120084) that the impeller connects to with a sheer pin. Remove the sheer pin. Then slide the arm forward and remove the pin on the shaft and slide the impeller forward. Remove the bolts that were holding the rear bearing in place. I love your video and have shared it with many other owners. I think I also found a step to add that will make it easier to do with 1 person. When you're removing the 3 bolts from each side of the auger (Around 10:30 in the video), loosen BUT leave the top one's in (just loosen the bolt). you can "swing" the front out by pulling the entire assembly out letting the 3 carriage bolts at the back fall away. Then slowly letting it swing back into position to put the 4 auger bearing bolts back. Hope it helps someone else so you don't need to support the weight when doing alone. Great video!! Inspired me to buy it and I'm going to install it this weekend. As far as the wire goes, I saw on a Deere parts website that a new spring pin is recommended when adding this drive. Makes good sense. Not related to this upgrade, I replaced the quick pin that is used to lock the rotation of the quick hitch (it's needed for the blower, but you remove it for plowing to allow hydraulic blade angling) with a 3/4" x 6" threaded bolt and nut. It took away ALL of the wobbling of the blower when the pto is engaged. It was driving me crazy! Now she's nice and stable. If I do switch to my blade, I'll have to remove a bolt now instead of the quick pin... but I'll gladly take that extra 2 minutes occasionally, rather than having that blower rocking around like an amusement park ride!! Ha!! Again, thanks for such an informative video.

The only thing I did different was greasing the shafts before sliding the gear box on and the shaft before adding the PTO drive shaft. My blower dates from 2009 and the PTO shaft was rusted enough I had some fun getting it off the old small gear assembly. I had already greased the shaft the large sprocket was mounted on, so no difficulty there. I also saved the bearings from the small sprocket and the Auger Gear Box input shaft as they are the same bearings used on the ends of the Auger and I had to replace them on my original 1995 vintage blower so I am sure I will also have to eventually replace these bearings on my current blower. Blue LockTite would have been a better bet to hold those bolts for future removal when you have to change the Auger shaft bearings, you will most likely have to remove the new gear box you just installed. I used Anti-Sieze on my bolts as the county used salt on the roads and my blower gets a workout in the slush that creates clearing out the end of my driveway and they have held just fine.

Hey Edward, Thanks for stopping by the channel. I’m actually hoping I never have to take the box off. 😁 My tractor and blower are 5 years old now and live a pretty plush life. LOL It blows snow from a paved driveway so it doesn’t get the paint chipped and after its done it gets cleaned off after each use and put back in a heated garage to fully dry out. It’s pretty spoiled as you see in the video there’s no rust anywhere. Fingers crossed that parallel box was a one and one swap. 👍🏼 Take Care..

Very nice video I've had my blower since 2008. It has moved literally tons of snow. Every Spring I p.m. it before I put it away. Every fall I go through it. Adjusting the chain this year I noticed some wobble in the shaft between the auger and blower and chain drive. I figured it was a bad bearing so I ordered some and some flanges. Turns out one of the carriage bolt holes was cracked in the blower housing loosening up the flanges. I took a plasma cutter and caught one of the new flanges and welded it to the blower housing to reinforce the area that's really a weak point in these blowers. I was also disappointed the new flanges we're nowhere near the quality of the old bronze ones. And to top it off the new bearings were made in China printed right on them. I looked up the Gear Drive and got sticker-shock!
@SometimeIsNow
@SometimeIsNow 2 года назад
Hey William, Thanks for stopping by the channel. Sounds like you are very resourceful and was able to repair the worn flange mounting point. Thats great. 👍🏼 As you noticed in the video the mounting holes are no longer used for the carriage bolts but just 3 guide holes for the parallel box for alignment. Most of the support are from the four bolts back further on the gear drive and the hanger on the impeller shaft. I’m wondering if in your case one or more of your carriage bolts came loose and or the shaft running from the chain drive to the impeller had excessive vibration from the old less lubricated original bearing and that’s what cracked the housing. In my past 36 yrs in Industrial Maintenance and dealing with much larger flange and pillow block bearing mounts, excessive vibration from an old, minimal or no grease in the bearing or loose mounting bolts caused the fracture at the main mounting point. Grease in a sealed bearing only last so long before the grease finally gets used up from heat and those bearings in your 2008 blower were probably at their end of life cycle. I know all to well how it is to find a good quality bearing anymore. Especially in these times. For me, having a bearing delivered for a million dollar piece of high speed production machine to say CHINA on the bearing it makes me Cringe. When you remove a Timken, NTN, Fafnir or SKS bearing you expect the same when you order a replacement. Sadly, In todays age that seldom happens anymore. Take Care and have fun blowing snow !! I know i do when I’m on my John Deere 😁 👍🏼

Hey Busman, Sorry just seen your comment. To answer your question, If you already have the new style parallel box on your new snowblower you should be able to remove the horizontal auger and hangar support bracket and pull everything out at once from the front without removing the parallel box in the back. May I ask why you are going to a steel impeller? Is your driveway stone and gravel? because if it’s not and it’s asphalt, IMO I see no reason to go to a steel one. My snowblower is 5 yrs old now and has the plastic impeller and it’s still like new. Plastic have come along way over the years an much tougher than back in the day. Just my .02 cents 😁 Take Care

So far zero issues and the blower runs so much quieter and no more grease and rust all over the place in the rear of the snowblower from the open chain and sprockets. Take Care 👍🏼

Thanks very much for sharing the experience. I have all the pieces and hope to make the change next weekend. What did you use for wire on the spring pin? I have plenty of copper wire laying around but that seems a little soft. Admittedly the wire has absolutely nothing to do unless a one in a million chance happens and the pin starts to move Then then something more substantial than copper would be nice. Maybe a #6 bolt with washers on each end thru the spring pin and Loktite'd nut on the end. No actual load on the #6 bolt, the washers keep the pin from straying too far out of the hole, and even though I do not have as much Loktite as you seem to have I have enough for a #6 bolt. Anyway, just a thought until you tell me what you actually used 😊

Welcome to the channel Arvid and thanks for stopping by. I can tell you the Snowblower definitely runs quieter with the parallel box installed.. No more chain and sprocket rattling noise. If you watch my latest video I just posted you can hear the blower run at the end. ru-vid.com/show-UC5KRo5zOtq_JW1U0pnyxgmQ As for the Wire, I haven’t added it yet. I have to run to the dealer tomorrow to pick up a couple things so I’m going to see if they have the wire for the spring pin. I believe all it does is in the event the pin should work loose, which i doubt that would happen it will keep it from fall out. IF the dealer doesn’t have the wire I’m just going to add a piece of metal machine wire I have from my old maintenance job. I’ll let you know what I do. Take Care 👍🏼

Hey Max, I was able to get most of your info you were asking for by measuring my parallel box setup on my snowblower. The Readings were taken with a Dial Caliper. Input shaft OD is 1.00” and output hole ID is 1.00” ID. As for the rotation the input and output shafts rotate in the same direction. Sitting on the tractors seat looking forward the input and outputs run in a clockwise direction. As for the Ratio, without a RPM gauge I couldn’t give you a exact ratio. I can say the input shaft runs slower than the output does. Hope all this helps. Take Care. 👍🏼

@SometimeIsNow
@SometimeIsNow 2 года назад
Hey Patrick, Thanks for stopping by and welcome to the channel. Is the snowblower you just bought new or an older model? The reason I ask is the new JD slowblowers already come with the enclosed parallel gear drive as standard equip. If your snowblower is a older version with the open chain drive then there's no increase in performance, just easier maintenance and quieter. No more lubing or adjusting a dirty chain and the enclosed drive is noticeably quieter. Take Care.

Thank you for sharing this detailed breakdown! Did the parallel gear box speed up the auger at all? Mine does not handle heavy wet snow well at all, which is unlike any tractor mounted blower I have seen before, Seriously thinking about doing this for my JD 47 over the summer. Also considering changing out the impeller from plastic to metal, replacing the auger bearings since its already apart, etc. Any thoughts or advice you have is greatly appreciated. Again, thank you and hugs to Riley.

@SometimeIsNow 2 года назад
Hey James, The gear drive box didn't speed up the auger. I believe it stayed the same. In my experience over the years (a 47" and 2 54" front snowblowers) there's not many blowers that deal with heavy wet snow very well. The next one is just my opinion but I don't see the big need to upgrade the plastic auger to the steel one if someone has a paved or concrete driveway. Maybe someone with alot of stones in their driveway might be beneficial. Plastic's nowadays are used alot where steel use to be used. Old snowmobiles use to come with steel skis but now they're all plastic and not much takes a beating like a snowmobile ski. 😁Take Care🤙🏼

Wasn't really wet, but it was really warm for this time of year. And low and behold, it clogged up the chute on my 47. No matter what, something has to change!
