in this video, I will explain the revolution in tractor production pioneered by John Deere in the 1950's leading up to the John Deere Days of August, 1960 in Dallas, TX. It was here that dealers witnessed firsthand the unveiling of the New Generation of John Deere tractors and matched equipment. I have original video and sales literature from my personal collection to share with you.

As a kid, we farmed 147 acres in western PA with a 3010 and a 620. The 620 was the first brand new tractor we ever bought in 59. We didn't buy a new tractor again until like 2011.. I remember learning to raking hay at like 10, with the 620 and I was able to run it because of the hand clutch but couldn't reach the pedals on the 3010, so the 620 was always my baby. We still have the 620, and it still runs!

I couldn’t reach the pedals on the M either but I could on the 50. Thank you for watching

This was truly a trip down memory lane for me! Our small Montana ranch had three Farmall tractors (H, 309 and 460) until we purchased my aunt’s much larger ranch which had a 720 Diesel, a 1010 utility gas tractor, a 2010 row-crop gas tractor (all with wide front axles) and a 1010 gas crawler loader. I spent my formative years, first raking hay, grinding grain and spreading manure with the 1010. I preferred driving the 2010 and the 720 was my favorite! The 720 Diesel would bale hay all day on less than 5 gallons of diesel fuel, and could plow (4 bottoms) or disk (16-foot) like nobody’s business! Even with an Allis Chalmers 190XT and the Farmalls in our stable, the 720 was my favorite all through my college years. John Deere really blew away the competition with the New Generation tractors, and they haven’t looked back! Thanks for putting together this video.

Thank You for watching. We still have a 4020 left but it’s mostly retired in favor of newer cab tractors with AC and heat. We have a 4320 that’s permanently attached to a mixer mill grinding feed. Those 720 diesels were a big, heavy tractor and we didn’t see many around here. It’s like all the farmers didn’t buy any new tractors through the 1950s other than like a Super C or John Deere 50. Thank you again

This was and excellent presentation. I grew up on a beef farm in the 60's in South West Michigan and our primary work horse was a 3010 Diesel that my Grandmother bought new from John Deere dealer in Hastings, Michigan. She got a inheritance in 1958 from a Uncle. My Dad always told me that our 3010 was built in 1959. It was and outstanding Tractor and would pull a 4/16's 3 point hitch mounted plow on hilly ground all day long. That Tractor did everything. It cost $5k back then.

Even though we had 2 4020 and a 4320, there’s something about the 3010/3020 that I like so much better. It’s probably that they seem More proportional to me I guess. Thank you for watching and Happy New Year

If you look at the row crop 630/730 tractors, they share some of the updates with the 3010/4010. Mainly the rear fenders and the more modern steering console/dash panel

Yes. The designers incorporated quite a few updates that would come out on the new series

The New Generation series and the following models that took the design of the New Generation are my favorite, best looking front end, looks modern yet also old in the best ways.

Tom, really enjoyed this history of JD even though I am a Farmall/International fan. Thank you for sharing your significant knowledge about this topic. Peter

I agree with one of the other comments in the respect that I really am more a Farmall/IH tractor and implement fan but your knowledge and tutorial of the John Deere change over to the New Era models is fascinating and educational. I had a gas Model 1010 Utility tractor back in the 1980’s for about 10 yrs. and it was ok but always just a bit underpowered for the hay work I wanted to complete. Keep up the great effort to produce these videos as I have said previously I really enjoy your work and approach to farming and farm history.

Thank you 😊 I’m Working on IH from 1970-1985, the John Deere new Gen from 1963-1972 and The John Deere Sound Idea tractors. There’s only so many times I can show you feeding my cows over the winter haha. It’s too cold in my garage to work on Cubs, so it’s tractor history time . Thank you again

I read a reprint of a industry publication's article from early 1960 commemorating 25 years of Oliver 6 cylinder engines. It stated that more recently several other named manufacturers had put 6 cylinder engines in their larger tractors. It went on to say that persistently growing rumors are being heard that John Deere will soon be putting 6 cylinder engines in some of their tractors.

That Deere kept it secret for years is amazing. I read there was a donut shop near the old supermarket Deere used to design the tractors in. More and more Deere employees went there until at some point, the donut shop owner delivered donuts and coffee every day, walking right by all the drawing boards and whatever else was in plain sight. A Deere executive found out and had the donuts dropped in the lobby. 🫣

Oliver built fantastic tractors and had an incredible following until, in my opinion, White ruined them. The Oliver dealerships around me were called “The Oliver Stores.”

put a John Deere hydraulic system in an Oliver and you would have the perfect tractor@@LedgemereHeritageFarm

Actually the 560 came out in 1958 and it shared hydraulic oil with its tranny in one common sump.

A person has to remember horses were out numbering tractors on farms until 1954, then it turned.

True. My grandparents and great grandparents were still using horses until they bought a brand new John Deere LA and a Farmall H

I've got a 2030 that has foreign letters on the tach and tires that were made in Turkey. Can't find anything about it.

The European version was built in Mannheim, GE and Deere would apply decals and hand out owners manuals in several languages. We have a Belgian 4055
