Charlie Craighead, film producer, held a benefit concert on August 6, 1997 at Jackson Lake Lodge, Jackson Lake, WY, to raise funds for a film he was doing about Mardy Murie, sometimes called the "grandmother of the conservation movement," because of her writings and work in saving our natural resources. John Denver came to play and sing a ballad he had written about Mardy and her husband, Olaus, "A Song for All Lovers," but Mardy wasn't there because it was her potluck bridge night. Mardy was the recipient of the Medal of Freedom, this country's highest honor for civilians and many other awards from the Sierra Club and other environmental groups.

So beautiful. He looked so well and was sounding as great as ever. He puts every ounce of himself into each and every performance with this being no exception. This song is as beautiful and moving as any thing he has done previously. Then, just like that, he was gone 2 months later. I was so glad I got to see him in Dublin Ireland the April before..He opened with his stunning solo performance of 'It Amazes Me' on 12 string guitar, a mere few feet away from me. Sorely missed. Forever John Forever.

His voice was getting better as he got older. So sad we lost a man that loved life, living, the wilderness, and his expression of all those things that made our souls soar! I miss you John

So much to tell us - and so little time to sing!! To live in the hearts of those you have left behind - is to never die!! I will always miss the music that was to be!!

Oh my. I was at this show and had no idea that video existed. He also sang "Rocky Mountain High". I thought this would only live in my memories. What a treat to see him again at Jackson Lake Lodge. Thanks for posting.

I first heard this on the DVD of one of John's concerts - can't think which one right now. I loved the story he told about this pure Alaskan couple and when he sang this it gave me goosebumps all up and down my arms. I'm so delighted to have come across this video of John once again singing it at the fundraiser for the wife. Since I don't believe in coincidences I feel I was led to this tonight to bring back (though it truly never has gone ) some of the beauty and joy that was our forever friend and our beloved John Denver! You will always be missed, but your life lives on in your music, your incredible work for getting and maintaining the part of our country that will never used to 'benefit' commercial interests and your genuine love for all life has to offer.

I saw John four times...and each time I saw him live it changed me...I started playing the guitar at the age of 11...I had already memorized all of John's lyrics... John was by far and away my greatest musical influence...my cousin and I used to get together often and sing and play John's music and material that we were working on...we recorded some stuff on a reel to reel and transferred it to cassette tape...I must say most of it was very good...there was a song that I had written called Rocky Mountain Minstrel...it was my ode to John...we took the tape and put it in a shoe box wrapped it up really nice with a note to John and put it front of the stage...along with all of the flowers and whatnot that was at the stage front...he actually played in the round at the time...it was 1977 in Fort Wayne Indiana...we hoped that John would take a listen and perhaps have one of his people get in touch with us and say that John wanted to record one of our compositions...of course that didn't happen....he got that kind of stuff all the time I'm sure...but I often wondered or I guess dreamed that one day he took the tape and put it in his car while driving and listened to it..and maybe even thought it was pretty good...everyone has a dream and that was mine and my cousins dream...to have John record one of our songs....we all sure miss you John....❤️❤️

@@floaustin I would probably have to go back and find it on a cassette because I don't have the lyrics anymore and don't even remember the chord changes..but I will try and find the song and send it to you.. thanks J.T.

It was John who touched us with his music. Those of us who knew him well also knew his flaky side. But you just read the words of some of his songs, even without the music, and they are quite poetic. Bil Danoff, who wrote 12 of John's hits, and I both very much like "It's Good To Be Back Home Again." Very touching.

The story of Mardy Murie and her husband, Olaus is amazing. I watched the video, "Arctic Dance - The Mardy Murie Story". It was the most touching video I've seen since "A Song's Best Friend" about John Denver. She was an amazing woman and she and John were very good friends. John would not have been hurt by her no show. Knowing all about Mardy makes this song so much more special. Her book "Two in the Far North" is a book that everyone should read.

Excellent video. From the date of this I had seen him in concert just two days earlier and it was the last time I ever saw him and he sang this song as his encore to close the show. I still miss John so very much.

@cidspimms Another post I couldn't agree w/more. One of my greatest hopes is that by now John has some amazing new songs to go with his classics. (Though I've long felt much of his best work never were "hits") And that very shortly after I cross over he'll be singing his heart out, as always. After all, it wouldn't be heaven to me if there was no John Denver music or concerts! And somehow I don't think it would be heaven to him if he wasn't singing to "everyone who'll listen to him sing" :)

This is a perfect test for the actual talent of a singer. How do you sound when recorded via home video with no effects or editing? Well, he still sound pretty damn good. He sings in tune and maintains the emotion & presence regardless of the poor acoustics, coughing and crying babies.
@jmm1929
@jmm1929 13 лет назад
Having discussed this with John shortly before his death, I think the fault was in those who put together the concert not choosing a time when both John and Mardie could be there. We discussed more than that but let's leave it there.

I can't understand this woman missing John Denver singing a song just for her and a no show just because she had to play a Bridge game. He must had been feeling let down by this insult. Sorry dear John Denver, we love you for doing it anyway. Enjoyed you.

@cedartree696 ITA! Of course, having seen JD perform w/full symphonies, to his tour band, to just him and his guitar on his last acoutic tour, I felt his clear as a bell voice was always most brilliant when stripped down. I don't think he agreed, as his concerts typically had his vocals WAY too low and far too much orchestration going on. That said, there was no such thing as a "bad" JD concert-- just some were more brilliant than others. And I'd give anything to be at one tonight. Sigh

At that point in her life Mardie was not impressed with any celebrity though she loved music and was a regular at the Dornan Hoot. In Jackson Hole, unlike Aspen, celebrities are just like other people. Her crossword puzzle group would go on and on, John was just passing through. It was the film producers who pissed him off, he told me, not Mardie.

Regretably I don't know who did the video tape to give credit, which I always want to do. But I know from a conversation not long after this event that John was not amused at flying up there to do this song and Mardy was a no show.
