The modern era of abundance has afforded us the ability to be vegans which is wonderful and I truly believe that we should all do what makes us happy. However it should be noted that humans are not meant to be vegan or vegetarian, humans in the old times ate anything our ancestors could find, it is how our species survived
Kevin Cosner's character and many vegans make some wrong assumptions. The issue isn't eating meat. The issue isn't eating something that was once alive. the specific issue is the killing of highly sentient life as a food source when we clearly have reasonable alternatives. Plants are alive too. No one complains about that. The fundamental difference is sentience. Vegans and some meat eater activists take extreme positions much like elements of both sides of the abortion issue Some pro-lifers take absurd position that frames abortion at the moment of conception is killing a "baby". This is like arguing the vegan position on killing any animal regardless of the level of cognition is "murder". And of course, some take the opposite extreme that late-term abortion is not killing a baby when clearly a late-term fetus has high levels of cognition. .The rational debate isn't picking A or Z but where between these polar points does a living entity deserve rights and using what rationale? And the only scientific answer available to us is when/if does the lifeform reach a redline of sentience that deserves protection?. Some meat eaters attack those that criticize them for eating highly sentient animals like pigs and cows... but then would be horrified if someone argued to eat their beloved dogs and cats which are no more sentient. This is not morally consistent even in the framework of their own alleged values. There is an emerging moral out though for meat eaters that don't require veganism.... cloned meat. Cloned meat is 100 percent real meat. Pretty soon shoppers are going to be faced with moral choice of buying meat that was grown in vat using a few animal cells versus eating meat that involved slaughtering a highly sentient animal. Assuming safety vetting and costs are eventually competitive, meat eaters will have no justification left to choose the meat of slaughtered animals then. Even the real reason why people eat meat, superficial flavor, will no longer be an excuse. Givien the emerging options those that think the livestock industry is sustainable are not only morally wrong but much like slavers are on the wrong side of history. While it's still a few decades away eventually killing any highly sentient animals for use as a food source is going to be banned as animal abuse.
Well I guess I'll just have to respond that it's not what goes into a man's mouth that defiles him, but what comes out of it. I'm not troubled with killing an animal, just as my ancestors for thousands of years have not been troubled by it. Living in a first world country enables us to make superfluous arguments when we should be looking in the mirror and fixing ourselves. Just some general thoughts on what you said. -Breven Engelson
@@broomtailcountry Our ancestors use to live in caves, and have slaves. Our ancestors were perfectly fine with theocratic tyranny and absolute monarchies. Our ancestors believed the sun rotated around the earth. The old "our ancestors' angle is evasion. The moral issue isn't going way for empty rhetoric. We are killing highly sentient animals for food when we no longer need to do it. We have plenty of alternative food options today than killing some of our evolutionary cousins that clearly can feel fear, pain, love, and joy just like we can.. I used to be a meat eater myself and made the same sorts of arguments. It's hard for people to change their ways. Change is possible though It's morally untenable behavior and it needs to eventually stop.
@@broomtailcountry Cosner's character actually makes a valid point about killing animals plowing a field. There are also animal byproducts in all sorts non-ediable consumer products too. (which we all use) What he misses though...through technology we can eventually eliminate that issue as well. His character sounds reasonable to those that are looking to morally justify their meat eating but it's just more deflection. One doeesn't have to be perfect. One can eat less meat. Or cut out just highly sentient animals, or shift to cloned meat (which will be available within a year or two since FDA just approved it), Or whatever. We should all be moving in the right direction not pretending we are doing things right now.
@@mydogsbutler I think you make a valid argument that animals are sentient beings. More to come later when I have time. Thanks for you concise and clear thoughts.
even if you buy into what duttin is saying in this vid or the idealized farm its so divorced from reality we dont have nearly enough land for these types of ranches... the character ironically enough is dying of colon cancer, i wonder what that could possibly be related 2 mhmmm what causes colon cancer? A low-fiber and high-fat diet, or a diet high in processed meats. Overweight and obesity. Alcohol consumption. Tobacco use. mhmm weirdly enough a whole food plant based diet is the exact opposite high in fibre its not a big stretch we all know to eat more fruits & veg & grains is good for us its not crazy to see that having a diet souly consisting of said food would not only make you healthier but would force you to eat the stuff that is greatly lacking the majority of people diets no its not the protien where all going mad about getting its the fibre How common is fiber deficiency? Fiber. Only 5 percent of people in the US meet the Institute of Medicine's recommended daily target of 25 grams for women and 38 grams for men. That amounts to a population-wide deficiency - what nutritionists call the “fiber gap although adequate intake of all types of fiber is associated with many health benefits,1,2 an estimated 95% of American adults and children do not consume recommended amounts of fiber. How many crops are grown to feed animals? The analysis found that in, 2018/2019, 62% of all cereal crops were used to feed animals and 12% used in industry and as biofuel, with only 23% going to feed people. A striking 88% of soy and 53% of protein-rich pulses were also used for animal feed ( the research still shows it makes more sense to go vegan if where talking about preserving sentient life) even if where not talking morals or philosophy global warming man the animal systems that are in no way natural are the leading causes to all that shit duttins farm is no way sustainable you see the farms they show you on tv are so divorced from reality mhmmmm wait the our poor rain forest... i wonder what there using that for ohhh wait to grow feed for the animal system that even though they get massive substitiece from the government that allow us to afford such products still dont even nearly make the animal product systems even nearly sustainable & don't even get me started on what where doing to our oceans for the sake of fish we talk about reusable this straws our carbon footprint man our plastic straws takes 0.06 percent of the plastic thats in the ocean mhmm lets see whats the ocean is really filled with ohh wait what (Rotterdam - September 1, 2022) The Ocean Cleanup has today published new research in the journal Scientific Reports showing that the Great Pacific Garbage Patch (GPGP) is largely composed of fishing-related plastic waste, with 75% to 86% of all plastic waste in the GPGP identified as coming from offshore fishing ...1 Sept 2022 it takes time veganism is a beautiful & sustainable answer to a wide range of problems this world has its not perfect nothing in this world is but its the best solution to an array of problems we as a society are causing ignorance is bliss & change is in no way easy....
