I like how relaxed John is with these sorts of interviews. He really likes to explain his musical direction and thought process when he feels that he is talking to someone who is interested in the music itself, over his status or fame. It really shows and is really engaging to listen to.

The fact is most of us will never gain much recognition for music beyond perhaps a few thousand views on youtube or spotify. That idea can paralyze you unless you decide to not care. Some guys can never get over the "I'm not going to be a rock star" realization.
@irenahalder
@irenahalder 3 года назад
P*Funk Frusciante found rock stardom was not what it was cracked up to be (excuse pun 😆) in fact, it caused him frightening mental illness. Retrospectively this isn’t surprising, and the experience made him strong and even more creative. I feel sad, even angry though that technology and more recently Covid have ruined the prospect of appreciation and livelihood for musicians. The record industry stood aside and allowed it all to happen and will never be held accountable for it’s failure to nurture and support artists adequately. I don’t have any answers, but I hope musicians such as yourself can gain the inspiration to keep growing, somehow, otherwise we all lose and become spiritually the poorer.

There’s no one that can inspire me to keep pushing myself further in creation like John. His articulation of his ideas and reasoning is so refreshing. I had been listening to electronic music for years and never really understanding the sub genres or the instruments in anyway. With John he opened the whole thing up and revels so much. squarepusher is similar. but for whatever reason John made me want to dig deeper into everything and learn more. I wonder how does he get inspired. It seems like he would have to dig very deep inside himself. Because I don’t see another artist like him that can spark that interest of knowledge. He’s said in the past, that he’s always been into educating himself. It really shows ✨

@@AndrewKarczewski Well, if Rick Rubin is involved, his name shouldn't even be on the album. Maybe they write, 'Helped or Inspired by Rick Rubin', but not "produced by Rubin'. He is notorious for essentially never being in the studio with the band. He lets the band and his engineer do all of the work.I have heard about a ton of stories like this involving him. One time while doing a Slayer album, he would show up in the studio once every 7 or 8 days to see how things were going. I don't think that he is lazy or anything, it is just that he will take on multiple projects at once. Bands either love him or hate him. Some accept his absences as 'it's just the way he works'...while others hate it and don't work with him again.

But as long as the musical connection these guys share is there and as long as they do what they do from the heart, I can't see it being anything less than their other records with John. Every single album since Blood Sugar has been different and driven by a different mindset and perspective yet all of them shared the same magic and spirit. This one will be the same.

Yes in way. I used to be imto that too, very much, but I feel he is capable to channel so much higher vibrations/musical listening xperiences. Jungle is cool, but its also really root'y, like flesh, fucking, no thoughts, not much heart. So for me, I wish he did something that isn't as earth/malkuth like. But who knows, maybe he is trying to be more like the organs of the body that just function. "" Thpughts are disturbers of life, like dreams are of sleep" (Crowley) But... Damn, we are not just feelgood fuckmachines. I hope JF soon goes over to some other genre. But if its deathmetal or something likethat, idk, then I'll cry!

I agree...I think were he to leave Peppers again...that will be the end. As far as his wasted talent etc....I totally understand your sentiment. I really enjoy his non-extronica albums a lot (Not that I dont enjoy Electronic music...I love Aphex Twin/Autecre and especially love downtempo stuff like DJ Shadow/DJ Krush/Kruder & Dorfmeister etc)....I have given his electronic music a ton of time and I just cannot connect with it at all. I suppose to each his/her own....as long as he is growing as a musician and as long as he is happy in his life...thats all I can really hope for. Curious to hear what the RHCP album will sound like. I enjoyed the Getaway....liked about half Stadium Arcadium...enjoyed about 90% of By The Way and Californication etc...(and their B sides are actually better than many of the songs that made the albums)....and of course BSSM and Mothers Milk are great. Hopefully they grow together collectively and put out a great new album. We shall see.

Marie Fontana Marie Fontana hard to believe that rock is on its last breath and almost dead as John says. I think that has to do with the way music has changed hands to the internet, like RU-vid and Spotify, and how little they are paying the musicians, and even more so, music companies. People who listen to rock music don’t put a whole lot of money into it. They listen to it, and consume it, but don’t really pay for it anymore. Why would you, when you can get it for free on RU-vid? So, record companies have decided to put out the music that they can make money on. Rock will never die, but, it’s not going to be pushed without the demand for it. And, demand equals money. So, if we want rock to stay alive, WE MUST PAY FOR IT. Or, we will be forced to listen to the music that teenage girls like the most, because that’s who puts the most money into the pot.

Great interview could listen to John speak for hours. A very Buddhist, Eastern philosophical approach to music. Creating music without the Expectation of the audience. Without being Attached to a certain kind of music and not letting the influences of the world affect your creativity. Keeping the creative process new approaching it with a different perspective without Aversion. John continues to be an artist in the true sense of the word. making Original music without influences from the outside world but simultaneously tapping into his own memory of influences from his past. Being in the NOW of the creative process. Rock music "taking its last breath" in the sense that the best music doesn't have to be behind us if we are willing to look at it in a new way. and as always talking about energy, electricity and the magic of sound. Jungle boogie. Keep intros and outros in music keep the foreplay in music so, we still have the peaks to look forward too and keep it new so, we are always keeping it real every time. I'm down with that. lol!

It might be their best album ever to date! Their gonna be cooking something new and fresh to rock I bet. They have been together for a few months jamming so they prob have been exploring and mixing genres with Rock to see what works. With how fast they bust out songs I can guess that they can record maybe 3 albums worth of songs if quarantine last midway till next year. Even then maybe they won’t tour as much and just create magic in Studio Albums only like the The Beatles late era. Anyway I’m excited we should get some sick music without a doubt from the Chili’s, Johns knows how to produce more now, he’s explored and has knowledge in many genres, flea is his vanilla to his cream, Anthony busting out catchy rhythms and chorus’s to John’s riff’s and Chad keeping them all on check slapping his sticks around them all. The whole band seems to be at a fresh start rn which is even better!

It’s really curious how such a melodic songwriter and virtuoso musician that has in-depth sophisticated musical knowledge, can have such an interest in these electronic forms of music. Most accomplished musicians would turn their nose up at jungle and hardcore. John has an open mind and next to no snobbery when it comes to music. It’s refreshing. ☺️
@heety9

Harry ML I agree, there are different form is sophistication and complexity in music. Electronic music expresses that differently than rock, and as a self-proclaimed lifelong student of music, it makes sense that John would gravitate to something that casts light on music in new perspectives :) Anyone who turns their nose up to different music probably has a very rigid idea of what music is, and John is the antithesis of that!

@@heety9 ur so right with the differences between rock and electronic music. I've started to listen to some really "weird" electronic music and at first it's hard to listen to cause in rock type music ur really used to having the typical changes from chorus to verse and vice versa and big climax with solos or big instrumetal parts and ur always expecting that more quick changes of sections and things like that, but in electronic music most of the time it's just a big progressive sound, things getting added every 4 bars and just this huge building Soundwave that is just incredible. Sometimes u get a big climax or sometimes u can just get this chill beat for 20 minutes and that is really captivating and amazing, it's cool to open to some new stuff and learn things about different genre's

I am well on my way in a few genre's but their knowledge of music is deep. In my head I can hear Flea saying, "So this afternoon we are going to learn about Charles Mingus"........As if, he/they have nothing else to do.... ;-). hahahaha Okay, so back to reality, I have learned so much about music from these guys, I can't thank them enough. It was a bit heartbreaking to hear. PBX and Letur Lefr are amongst some of my favorite music of all time. I also of course love his more traditional music in the 00s. But like someone else said, I have a feeling he will circle back around. He is very intense and in the moment. He says this but then literally a year later wrote “The Heavy Wing” and sings on that and there is no way that wasn’t “his true self”. It’s impossible to write something that sounds so genuine and not mean it, especially from him. Plus he seems to be having a great time on tour. I for sure think he will sing again, even if it’s a different way. He is too diverse, even for what he says “I only express myself in the ways of solely electronic music” kinda goes against everything that makes John, John! He literally loves every type of music.

Recently Dave praised John es on this radio guitar show, and expressed how much he loved his playing and his amazing work at such a young age in the bssm album. He even went to say that blood sugar is his favorite album and if you have to ask is the song he likes the most :)

Hey John. In Rhode Island we have a DJ that became Huge in the 80s into the 90s VENOM BECAME the man spinning house and jungle. 93 we had a very large RAVE called Project Earth if I'm correct. On name and year. It was at an Inside Palladium and the theme park was open to the show man that was such an amazing experience. It felt like time stood still for a moment in time with thousands of people dancing together. That is far out

Probably why the band dropped their nearly finished album with Josh was - that they just weren't that excited about the result... I think it really is that simple. And they had to make it before they could asses the situation. They don't need the money - it is something else that drives them and if John would come back off course they have to give it a shot! For them it's all about making music that can be as good as it can get. These guys worked 35 years for this band - they know when the songs aren't there...

Could anyone please explain to me what he means when he says (around 18min 46sec) something like: "it's like this prague thing". Just before that, it was mentioned the 'prague legend'. What does it mean? Also, right after he says 'then you parrot it down as much as you can'. I would appreciate any help I can get to understand this sentence. Thank you!
@buckodonnghaile4309
@buckodonnghaile4309 3 года назад
Prog not Prague. Prog (Progressive Rock) is a type of music from the late 60s/70s, bands like Yes (who the interviewer mentions), King Crimson, early Genesis, some Pink Floyd . To parrot something is to imitate it.

Actually he said "to pair it down" not parrot. I think he means to strip it down to its essentials, to its bare bones. Prog rock is kind of known for long and complex songs, sometimes with many instruments/musicians and lyrics that are considered intellectual by some and pretentious by others. Just Google Prog Rock and you will find many articles explaining it better than me. Cheers

Buck Ó Donnghaile so, it would actually be ‘to pare it down’, like I originally thought. In the transcription of the interview, someone wrote ‘Prague’, instead of ‘prog’ and ‘parrot down’ instead of ‘pare it down’. I’m just trying to help a translator friend of mine. Thank you so much again!
