When Rick was speaking about "the source" it made me think about how 2 people could be writing the same kind of song but 1 gets played on the radio or Spotify or wherever and the other one we'll never get to hear. I think if you have a song and even if you think it's similar to another you should still try to get it heard. "The source" opened up to more than 1 person for a reason. 2 different perspectives of the same kind of song is actually 2 completely different songs, 2 different vibes. Don't throw it away just because someone else got theirs on the radio first. Go for it.

I know this is easier said than done, but being surrounded by apathetic and unsupportive people reacting to our compositions and creations may be a blessing in disguise: Despite it hurting in the moment, I know that for many of us (especially me), worrying about what other people are going to say about our art is an enormous obstacle, and pulls us away from authenticity. Considering what other people think about our work invites paralyzing anxiety, and is my personal and ever-present reason for regularly practicing being inauthentic, which is death to the artist, (again, especially me). If we already know that those around us are going to be “meh” and not care about what we create, that in itself can be incredibly freeing, as we are now unhooked from the chains of others’ expectations, that would otherwise keep us down. I believe there is never an end to making others satisfied by our own actions, it becomes a wound that is impossible to heal. I believe that it will indeed hurt a little every time we think about the people around us either being critical of or not caring about our art, but perhaps we should practice recognizing that hurt as a noble, artistic suffering to be proud of, and that to truly be authentic (which is a courageous goal that results in the most satisfying creations), the momentary hurt is a burden we must carry. I believe the trick is recognizing the hurt for what it is, and intentionally refusing to let it get in our way; making a conscious decision and realization that we will experience much pain in all of our lives, but we’ll be damned if we let it prevent us from doing what’s most important to us. Like everything else in life, this takes practice. But I believe it is worth it, for you, me, and all of us. Your creative voice matters, and it is important to the world. Although I BELIEVE many things, there are also a few things that I KNOW, and this is one of them: Not only is your voice and your art incredibly important, but our world NEEDS it, and together, that’s all of us, despite how isolated we might feel, are better for it, connected by your courage to share your art. Dig it. Hang in there, you’re not alone, and keep fighting the good fight! -NicoXociN
@oratere01

This is about the most important comment and contribution I’ve read on a RU-vid thread. Thank you so much for taking the time to share your thoughts and reflections. I felt like you were reading my mind and I share that experience of dealing with self doubt/anxiety. I’ve listened to long to the opinions of others and needing their affirmation or acceptance. Totally crippling and paralysing. At the point I realised that I was enough, all the power I had given to the thoughts of others came back to me. But also, and I think this is one of the points you make, you begin to value the tension bought by the deminishing presence of other peoples opinions. Once you realise that you can be the one who decides wether your compositions are great, other opinions can be used to clarify your love for self and love of your art. Then comes true liberty I believe, but it must be wrestled for! The angst and pain is part of the journey and of our growth, and we must embrace it to grow and be beautiful and amazing. Your words inspired me to respond and say “fuck yes!”

For me, Rick Rubin just defined the difference between art and product. Art is something you make for you, the audience, "You can't make art with someone else in mind." I think that becomes product; something you make to please some other audience. And that's Led Zeppelin compared to Menudo.

I am currently unfamiliar with this teacher's musical achievements. Isn't it a shame that we need "success" and "achievements" to validate someone's words? The words here don't depend on him or his success. It's self-evident.... What if this guy were just a musical no-one? Would it change the truth of the words? No... Here's another paradox... We know that the journey is ultimately a journey of 1 (just 1), yet still it's comforting to hear other enunciate and clarify one's own philosophy. Revelation: "Don't listen to *anyone*, including me!" That kind of lesson always creates a dynamic opposition in the mind/spirit. Thanks, Glo!

Agree so much with this. I regard my paintings as reflections of where I'm at and never change or correct things later. At times they are knowingly worse than works I've done before but that's how change happens.. creativity is different to production. great clip

Picked up on me. Thanks. Edit: Let's Go Away for Awhile, Pet Sounds, Beach Boys, is a really good example of what RR is talking about in Relationships in the Studio.
