Taria a great interview with John, thanks for both of you for sharing your thoughts.

This is a great video! The one tip I have to make viewing better is that the camera doesn't change to you every time you say "Yeah." It's a little annoying. It would be nice to have it focused on John the whole time he's talking and only switch to you when you are saying something of importance, rather than every time you agree. Thanks for sharing. The video has lots of good info.

Watching your discussion with John was very informative. You did a great job covering a lot of ground and John used his sketchbooks as very helpful visual aids. Seeing you have a go with John's style was fun and inspiring, as well. Thanks very much.

Finally I found time to try this style. So I started my day rewatching this video and then I will try to find kind of a workshop with him before lunch ... and in the afternoon I planned to try a motive of my own - I will see how this day will work out.

That was great. I like how easily you did the watercolor, i think i may think too much about sticking within lines, etc. Seeing your demo helped a lot.

I'm watching this 6 months later and I'm just appreciating John's advice on how to be comfortable accepting a piece as done despite the white spaces. His advices are all so constructive and approachable. I'm excited to try them out! I like your demo piece too..and trust me, i empathize with you. I could hear the voice in my head cheering "paint the red roofs!". LOL. You have demonstrated great restraint! I think using the brush pen to fill in the shadow made a big difference too. I would definitely try this out and will combine it with your secret weapons! ;)

Found you by searching through John Harrison YT videos, which I love - he has a great style, simple and effective, and I so love line & wash - I loved your Whitby sketch, following the chat with him, and I would have stuggled with deciding about the red roofs.... I've only started watercolour this year, after retiring, and trying to find a style...I think line & wash suits my mindset, and skill level! I'll check out your tutorials..

👍 Great tips from John Harrison and wonderful interview. I'll have to check out his work soon. I do get drawn into sketches with the 'less is more' paint style. Painting only natural things and leaving manmade details white, plus painting within a shape only, are definitely tips I'll be trying. You restrained yourself well with leaving those rooftops without colour. I would have been tempted as the contrast of orange-red roofs against blue-green background would have been pleasing on the eye as well. The timer is another good tip. As I'm easily led off on new tangents, and end up with my fingers in too many pies, I think the limited-time would keep me focused when completing projects at home. Of course, either the weather or my bladder usually keeps urban sketching to reasonably small time slots anyway, lol.

Thanks Wen - I am tempted to go back in and paint those rooves! Ha ha, yes I hear you regarding the natural timer that is either the weather or bladder!!

I am finding that so many artists grew up drawing....when I was growing up paper was made to precious.....i drew on mud when the spring rains came. What a friggin outrage. I still have a hard time putting pencil to paper because of this and the anxiety is real. Even though i have an entire cupboard filled with blank paper..ready for pens, pencil, charcoal and watercolor...rediculous!!!!!
@tarias_sketchy_adventures
@tarias_sketchy_adventures 3 года назад
Yes - the fear of a blank page is very real! Not wanting to waste it etc. It is a precious material for sure.
@marjoriejohnson6535
@marjoriejohnson6535 3 года назад
It is not just the fear of the blank page. It is that i have to do a perfect drawing, a real piece of art that the precious paper demands. After all to waste paper is a sin.
