I charted out "I'm In the Mood", John Lee Hooker's follow-up hit to "Boogie Chillen" and one of the best selling blues tunes of all time. There's a 5 bar intro (instead of 4), the first verse has two measures that are two beats "too short", the solo's 8 bars-- it's crazy! The 12 bar standardized blues format can really become rigid in players' minds, but it's a relatively new phenomena and it was no limitation to John Lee Hooker! Adding an extra two beats here and shortening the form there can create a freer expression-- try it out. The two finger E chord is also something I hope you can use.
I'll be posting a lesson on the blues greats once a week which will always be free. Small donations are gratefully accepted via paypal at rjohnnyband@gmail.com or venmo at Johnny-Burgin-1. Thank You! Deceptively simple. JLH was so effective in his playing.

Thank you for continuing to put these together for us, Johnny. Indeed getting out of the 12-bar mentality and getting in the spirit of Mr. Hooker (RIP) is something we all could use. As always, played with style and taught with intent, thank you.

So...still trying to decide if the youtube algorithm is just *that good*, or if it has like...access to my devices mics and is creepily listening in to whatever I am working on. Anyway, late night, drinking coffee, saw this, channel name, decided what the heck. I'm only 2:18 in and I am already moved to comment. Blues has been around long before 12BB was around and codified...you change when you wanted to....it lasts as long as it lasted.....break free of the 12 bar form. Amen. Refreshing. I would go as far as to say that the majority of music that really hits me in the feels, songs that really haunt me all have a few things in common....most of which are things I can't quite articulate...but some of the things I can articulate common to songs that get me right in the gut are...a unique timing....extra bars and beats...songs that would/do look rediculous charted out and are best described as songs that you really just need to listen to for a long time in order to lock in to the feel. Unique syncopated rhythms. Music created by people who were never classically trained, never has any formal instruction, and especially artists that figured out their own unique approach to an instrument, made up their own tunings. From R.L. Burnside, to Magic Sam, to Jimi Hendrix playing a guitar upside-down and Chris Whitely playing some haunting blues on a banjo....I think John Lee Hooker inspired a lot of the artists I love, and was likely inspired by a slew of amazing musicians we've never heard. Makes me wonder what kind of magic is out there....anyway. It's that kind of day...or night...haven't really slept yet and it's almost noon. And I'm waxing philisophic on the music of John Lee Hooker in the worlds longest youtube comment on a channel I've never seen before now. Sounds about right. Cheers.
