In 1969, a 14-year-old Beatle fanatic named Jerry Levitan snuck into John Lennon's hotel room in Toronto and convinced him to do an interview. 38 years later, Levitan, director Josh Raskin and illustrators James Braithwaite and Alex Kurina have collaborated to create an animated short film using the original interview recording as the soundtrack. A spellbinding vessel for Lennon's boundless wit and timeless message, I Met the Walrus was nominated for the 2008 Academy Award for Animated Short and won the 2009 Emmy for 'New Approaches' (making it the first film to win an Emmy on behalf of the internet).

For him to take time to talk so brilliantly and and in such an un-patronising way to a 14 year old was truly wonderful. This film should be broadcast on primetime television everywhere. Utter magic.

An unbelievable amount of human wisdom was transmitted in a bit more than a five minute interview. It's as true today as it was back in 1969. Thanks for posting.

This was GREAT! Way to honor a true man of honesty and PEACE! He wasn't always peaceful nor did he ever deny that he was violent-non violence is not the absence of violence-it is the enlightened struggle against the impulse to use physical force-or the mechanical militant force-to enforce your will or punish others who are against your will. This philosophical interview was John at his best responding to an honest and innocent admirer: intyelligent and sensitive and aware...a rarity for John with all the "Al Capps" and "Nixons" and "Chapmans" of the world trying to get at him!

I love this. John was and is still such an icon for me- I've grown up listening to his music and to his words of wisdom- I think this is beautifully done, and I'm glad that Levitan waited so long to release this wonderful experience that he had with Lennon that day. I think that Lennon himself would be proud that his words of peace still ring loudly decades later. LOVE IT :)

That was... beautiful. I only 14 years old so I never knew John, alive. I never knew all this stuff and how it was and just this... it gave me a glimpse at what was going on and what people fought for. And still fight for today. So thank you to Jerry Levitan, James Braithwaite, Josh Raskin and John Lennon.

Icon... I was personally not a huge fan of the music (I do like it and appreciate it), but I am a huge fan of their message. Scattered or not. Bottom line is they pushed peace in their own way and in a big way and should never be forgotten for this. What a loss. Glad he is back in a virtual way and very cool of him to give a 14 year old the time of day after sneaking into his hotel room. You won't find many celebrities or anyone for that matter, that would do this. Massive respect for him.

I know that the eggman was a reference to the lead singer of The Animals called Eric Burdon. Apparently, Burdon told Lennon at a party how once he was cooking breakfast whilst wearing nothing but a pair of socks when his Jamaican girlfriend called Sylvia shoved an amyl nitrate capsule under his nose. When the fumes made him fall to the floor, Sylvia got a raw egg and cracked it over his belly. As the egg dribbled down to his penis, she then proceeded to give him a blowjob. Lennon was laughing and then, when Burdon began eyeing up some of the girls at the party, Lennon said "Go on. Go get it eggman".

🐞 I Met the Walrus 🐝 In 1969, 14-year-old Jerry Levitan, packed his reel-to-reel tape deck along w/ him prior to sneaking into John Lennon’s hotel room in Toronto where he convinced John to do an interview about peace. 38 years later, Jerry has produced a film about it. Using the original interview recording as the soundtrack, director Josh Raskin has woven a visual narrative which tenderly romances Lennon’s every word in a cascading flood of multipronged animation. Raskin marries the terrifyingly genius pen work of James Braithwaite with masterful digital illustration by Alex Kurina, resulting in a spell-binding vessel for Lennon’s boundless wit, and timeless message. John was the more avant-garde, creative, albeit dare I say a revolutionary-minded genius whereas Paul was the hitmaker. Both geniuses in their own way but like... I dunno. It's kind of like the difference between Kurt Cobain and Dave Grohl, even though that comparison is not 100% perfect and it's bound to piss a few people off (sorry for that). But it is kind of relevant in a way as well, both extraordinarily talented people but they also couldn't be more different in terms of their personalities and what drives them as artists.

there is no such thing as a "better artist", there is only different kinds of artists. there are those who enjoy Lennon more, myself being one of them, as there are those who enjoy Paul more, and in their own minds and perspectives, both are the better artist, but really, they're both just two men that are artists, art is never supposed to be a competition, because then it isnt really art. Like comparing Hendrix to Slash, each person has their own stand on who's better, but they're both artists

Its funny how what we consider John's words as deep. Its just the truth. We accept and allow all the atrocities in the world. We are the ones responsible. Everyone is responsible for everyone. And how to change it? John did not really have an answer. But his and my words imply taking responsibility for what we accept and allow as the solution each one has in every moment. We are responsible for starvation, murder, rape, and war. Everywhere.
