Excellent lesson! And explanation of why you need to really understand the intervals and music theory. I also recently listened to your interview on Greg Koch's 'Chewing the Gristle' podcast from last October and you mentioned about how you teach the scale scale degrees instead of using tab. So, I just signed up for your Guitar Wisdom! I have so much to learn... But I'm looking forward to it!

This has to be one of the anthems for all us millennial guitarists. So simple but so powerful. With these simple songs, it’s easy to spoil it by playing too many notes and too fast. Tomo’s patient style of the right notes at the right time with the right feeling is perfect for this song. Everyone take note! This is the way to learn to improvise. One interval at a time. Thanks, Tomo! I love guitar wisdom.

So happy to hear that. John wrote an amazing classic song! Basic groove is only G & C. Triads! And BB King phrase but using less! Only two strings! Limitation is a great way to create original song! You're very welcome!

After months experimenting the lower three string triad for familiarisation of shape, sound, relations to scale, and chords, I'm ready to get to know the shape of the triads for the 4 strings in the middle. Co-incidentally, I re-discover back John Mayer album and been listening to it over and over again, and was amazed with the simplicity of Gravity but the complexity of emotion projected in this song. As I stumble to try myself looking for the chords shape and the sound, I know it lies in the magic of the triads. Here I am again, learning from you, Sensei. And you do make me understand the connection of all, double stop, triads, scale, phrasing. Thank you again.

I just wanted to drop in a quote that I think is very important in regards to one’s educational journey, especially through music: “Education, at its best and most efficient, is necessarily individualistic, it must allow for mistakes, and there must be a passion and a joy fueling you, with discipline as a guide. If not, then what good is the honing of your skill and the understanding of all there is in this world?” -Confucius, probably

I didn’t really understood the importance of knowing intervals for playing, you said that if we summarise all into what scale are we playing (in this case g major pentatonic) we will not improve but it’s the only way I understand the neck, what should I do? Postscript: I’m subscribed to guitar wisdom!!
@TomoFujitaMusic
@TomoFujitaMusic 2 года назад
This way you don't need to memorize any shapes plus you can hear what you would like to play or anything you hear, immediately you will understand them by intervals. What chords are you following? Thanks for subscribing my Guitar Wisdom. Please watch all theory & Theory II (Applied theory)

40 seconds in. We're missing a lot. This is the best moment as a teacher of music theory to push the narrative beyond music. It's not. Notes on a scale! JM has tapped into something beyond the notes beyond the tempo. This is the slide! The in between. And your tempo is way off. I expected more. I will still watch. Kudos to you. Thank you for teaching. But just AHHH we are missing a lot
@TomoFujitaMusic

Theory, scales are just things! You need to add more love & emotion! Thank you so much! You're very welcome! But still you need a solid foundation which John Mayer did not miss!
