@@lyndsey8088 not sure the whole story there. He was a writer, but never a cast member. He did eventually go back and host, but only after he made it big with standup and Netflix. He did try to become a cast member, and even helped Hader come up with Stefon. NBC also didn't pick up his sitcom. So I think it might possibly be bad blood with NBC/Lorne? He's known nothing but success since leaving that bubble, and Netflix has been very kind to him and Nick Kroll, but yeah. There's a long list of comedians that never made it on SNL because Lorne wasn't a big fan of them at one time or another. It would make for a great documentary/book someday, if NBC/Lorne doesn't prevent it from happening.

I dont think there's bad blood with him and Lorne/SNL . Lorne was a EP for his sitcom. And the first time he hosted SNL was a little before Kid Gorgeous was released on Netflix so hosting helped promote that for people who didnt know who he was. Plus when he hosted they very clearly let him do whatever he wanted so idk, he might have just thought it would be funny to keep saying "variety show" lol

@Christopher Cruz I developed a bad coke habit in my early 20s and as I struggled with that I learned from my dad that he and my mom dabbled quite a bit in college with coke, shrooms, acid, ecstasy etc. It blew my mind. Also helped me open up to him about my issues and I don't think I would have gotten clean without my parents' support.

I remember in an interview he said he wore suits to distinguish himself from the audience. When he did a set in street clothes and saw everyone dressed the same as him, he thought there was no reason he should have a mic versus everyone else. And the suited Mulaney was born:)

i think it makes more sense when he says he started on drugs in a failed bid to regain the attention of somebody who was breaking up with him, and slid into addiction because it helped him come out of his unhappy shell. That matches! A lot of people start using drugs in response to mental health problems, because just getting some counseling us so stigmatized. Which is dumb! If you have the choice between scrip addiction and a couple months of talking therapy or CBT, take the therapy, for the love of God. The chances the addiction will turn you into a John Mulaney are so slim

+Jonathan Jones Yes. He skipped his college improv comedy group (at Georgetown) where he first met & worked with Mike Birbiglia & Nick Kroll. Nobody from the comedy groups at my college became successful except Vanessa Bayer (formerly of SNL) and she's nowhere near as successful as Mulaney.
