Kurt put many a years in to get up there with John. Kurt is as unique as John in his own. Lyrical geniuses playing to a broken radio. Peace and love to all who will grab it and hold on for all to share it.
I like Kurt Vile , he is another of a small group of artists who don't give a sh!t about the record company or commercial stuff. He just gets out there and plays all over, and if u don't like him, well don't listen. But here's the news, John Prine liked him and respected him. It's like God reaches down, taps you on the shoulder and says "keep on doing what you doing buddy" . JP , I hope you have your buddy Phil rite beside you in the joyous place. ❤❤❤❤
I was in the audience for this show. Most of the audience was older folks and not so into Kurt. I thought it was magical. Thanks for posting. Two greats. RIP John.
Sorry for those older folks who weren’t into Kurt. Their loss! From another certified older folk: Kurt rocks and is an undeniably talented purveyor of the genre of music that Prine so masterfully is a part of.
Another "older folk" here who loves both Kurt and John. How old? Had the good fortune to see John at VT in 80 or 81. Grateful for younger musicians like Kurt who produce excellent music of their own yet appreciate the talents of those who came before
My oldest brother introduced me to Kurt’s music when “Pretty Pimpin’” came out. After listening to it I said, “I hear John Prine and Lou Reed when he sings.” Cool to see Kurt onstage with J.P.
What can I say.but this man left a huge void in my heart our hearts.I still can't believe he left us.but his music will live on he will be greatly missed.heaven has gained a great singer.
I guess there is not even one soul who has listened to J. Prine's songs who doesn't love and miss old John...but he passed his magic on to Kurt Vile before leaving us...not so orphaned.
What can I say? I am sitting here programming, and Sam Stone is on in the background, and I am starting to cry and can't hardly help it. How beautifully sad. I have the original album recordings, and for whatever reason, the words are coming through clearer than ever in this simple live recording. Thanks John and Kurt!
Kurt has always been one of my all time favorites. The simplicity is underrated and hes so gifted with words. Most of the time when i'm listening to his music i feel like hes speaking directly at me. Seeing that he played with JP warms my heart. Two of the best there will ever be!
I really like Kurt Vile, and have no words to express my deep abiding appreciation for John Prine. Put the two men together on the same stage and I just hit replay so I can listen again. Nothing short of freaking awesome.
It just proves that John was good to all people /artist was willing to talk and give much time to others also teach , John Was Great Friends with Kurt 🥰🎶
So awesome. I first hear of this song from Alabama 3 who were famous for doing the Sopranos theme song on a LP called Exile on Cold Harbour Lane. Then I found out it was written by John Prine, then found out he recorded it with Kurt Vile.. Damn it is Easter 2021 and I feel the resurrection of John Prime today. Love ya all.
@@brogan504 both,he used to be in The War on Drugs but now he plays with his band The Violators (billed as Kurt Vile and The Violators) live and lots of solo acoustic stuff
I simply cannot understand the negativity here. Yeah, nobody but steve goodman could have added anything to John's songs. But he was generous with his time, his music and his spirit. I'd have never known the joy of performing were it not for generous patient folks I played with. I bless John for that window.
I first heard Sam Stone in 1971 when my English teacher brought a record into class to listen to.... it was still called Great Society Conflict Veteran's Blues at the time
You can tell Kurt was putting his own little twist on this classic. John was probably thinking this kid should stick to the program. When Kurt hit that nice piece and John was surprised and seemed to be happy with it. I like how Kurt closed the song like John would have wanted.
Now John mastered a few chords, a few base runs, hammers and pull offs and it made him world famous. God bless. (That is what Travis Picking can do for you). Thousands of hours practice before that thumb gets loose from the hand.
Is this a shit post? It can't be because of his transcendent lyrics that he wrote at the age of 23. I assure you his guitar playing isn't what made him famous.
@@Fenderman123 when John had throat cancer, the doctor asked him what his profession was. He replied," I'm a singer songwriter" The doctor said," You will never be able to sing again" John said " You've obviously never heard me sing". That's what John Prine said after his surgery. Grieve every day.
kirkfest stumbled upon this while trying to find some high school football videos! i guess i have followed enough JP video's that this came up as suggested! i will often drive the back roads of east TEXAS and via the cell phone, i will listen to it over and over! To be honest, Covid Good/Covid Bad...... It has been a blessing to my beliefs, to my family and to my mental state of caring about the people in my life..... i think that was a lot of John's message.... Y'all be good, and remember that any tears are good tears as they create an emotion and an action!!!! Peace to ALL
John Kaitlyn great to hear someone else at this show at least cares about Kurt Vile if not prefers him!!! This guy is just hating on Kurt and I won’t have it.
2ndMounier I’m not even from or live in Philly as I drove 12-13 hours to see Kurt Vile. But I like John Prine and would have just seen him near me other wise.
Contrary to this comment section, I really dig a lot of stuff Kurt does. He's got his unique thing and is a good storyteller. Maybe not the ideal performing partner for ol' Johnny, though! Still, cool to see him give Kurt a nod.
I am a brand-new Kurt Vile fan. I love seeing my beloved performers mentoring and introducing other performers. It's how music grows and lives with us!
You home late late and you come home early. Broken the speed of loneliness, a love forever, what come over you. Out there just to on the run, dreadful sorrow, we got know word to say. What in heavens what have you done.
2ndMounier You don’t know what you are talking about!!!!! You really don’t know Kurt Vile or his music that well if you think all he does is ripe off John Prine. I have seen him like now 27 times and as he has hints of John Prines music within some of his songs yet so different!!!! Also Kurt has one of the most unique voices and his guitar is often easily recognizable as just Kurt Vile especially his solos on songs like Goldtone, Puppet to The Man, KV Crimes, Dust Bunnies, Jesus Fever, Freak Train, Wakin on a Pretty Day, Pretty Pimpin and so many others. You just were not listing if you thought that or something. If you listen him more you will see that you were just not paying attention to his set. John Prine is a influence to Kurt Vile but yet Kurt is so unique and different as well.
2ndMounier Why say something bad about Kurt’s music like this!!! It’s your right to not like Kurt’s music. But just you dissed Kurt and it bothers me!!! I don’t believe I missed your point at all!!!
Well if he was off with his Loop station pedal I could not tell one bit and I know the songs just as well or better than any real KV fan. So I don’t think he was off at all. As I have a video of basically the whole set
Don’t know the vile dude but between singing it like it’s a joke and singing unison instead of attempting and kind of interesting harmony I’m not impressed. John’s songs deserve more respect.
Hey man! Most of us who are here really like him and share the good and positivity of this here. If you do not like him I'd appreciate if you could just ignore it and let us enjoy what we do, and in return I'll gladly do the same thing for things you like that I don't. If you think he has potential but needs more time you are free to leave him alone for now and check in in a few years, but there are more positive ways to say that. I hope you get the agenda I'm trying to push and spread more positivity instead of spending time being negative where it is not necessary. See ya around!
You are so wrong and likely don’t even know who Kurt Vile is other than he has performed with John a few times a recorded a cover of How Lucky with him. If John was friends with Kurt and likes him you should not be saying these things despite if I love Kurt’s music so much or not.
You sound old and grumpy. He’s not even a “millennial” dummy. Subjective opinions are different than misspelling and facts 🤷🏻♂️ I think he’s good and so did John. You lose
That's what social media is dude, an open forum for peoples opinion and mine is 'he sucks', just like yours is ' I love him'. It's a big old goofy world kid
Sam Stone is my favorite tune by Prine. The Vietnam War made many of my friends into vegetables and I can relate. Back then no one knew about PTSD or similar conditions much less be considered heroes or welcomed home by anyone except their families. Such a sad, sad story. I hope one day I see the warmongers in the government be shut down and we stop funding the military industrial complex! 🇺🇲🙏🪖
