"I am one priest and bishop in the church who is no longer willing to read [the Bible] through stained glass lenses," Bishop John Shelby Spong said. That might as well be the man's mantra, and this lecture exemplifies why. Spong's idea of "reclaiming the Bible" refers to putting its words into context and highlighting its inconsistencies. In this lecture, he does so by tracing some biblical "facts" and addressing their validity.

I was already in love with Bishop Spong for so many reasons but I think it's his answer to the final question in this lecture that just puts it over the top for me. I hope you'll watch this video all the way through! He's just delightful and I rely on his scholarship a lot for expanding my metaphysical interpretation. FYI - he's not a metaphysician. But, a true metaphysician does not ignore Bible scholarship. They incorporate it into their interpretation of Scripture. Be blessed, Rev. Sherri James.

I have to say...I'm an Atheist & even I like this guy. Finally a man of God who speaks from a realistic point of view. If the churches followed his example there would be a lot less conflict between believers & non-believers.

We need more Christians like Mr Spong whose lectures take a practical and modern approach and force you to take a step back and THINK......unlike the bullish preachers who lectures seem nonsense I am not a christian but really can relate to the type of reasoning and explanations provided by Mr Spong
