John is the only reason I listen to Yanks games on the radio. Hes like a throwback to a 40s or 50s announcer -- thats a compliment. love how he gets excited, love his voice, and also how he gets a little eccentric sometimes. He HAS clips to play cuz hes a one of a kind with his own style.
He's fun to listen to because he's excited! As a life long Yankees fan, I love John Sterling's calls. It's a cheesy but who cares, the guy is excited. What's wrong with that? He's a fan the same as the people in the seats, if I had that job, shit yeah, I'd be that excited too!
Back to Back....and-a Belly to Belly!!!! I was at this game...my first game at the new Stadium...was awesome, now were gonna win it all...LETS GO YANKEES!!!!
One thing about Sterling, he doesn't hesitate to speak up if they Yankees did something stupid and he doesn't hesitate to get excited if the other team makes a great play.
I find him entertaining enough....sure he can be a bit of a mook at times....but living in Boston and still being able to pick up 880 AM here...his voice is like my savior on some game nights
"Listen up son"? Really? You've been a Yankees fan longer than I've been alive? Really? Sorry, but do I know you? How could possibly know for a fact that you've been a fan longer than I've been alive? Seriously, I'd love to know. Have you ever listened to Sterling call a game? Have you ever heard any of the great radio announcers call a game? They all have their schtick, and if you ask me, Sterling's is one of the best I've heard since I've been following baseball, back 35+ years ago...
I don't get why people hate him. I would rather have an eccentric and exciting Yankees announcer then some random guy assigned to call the Yankees game for the day and being normal and boring
+TheUnpluggedWop He's a fucking shitty broadcaster, that's why. He can't see. He misses plays. You don't know what the hell is going on when you listen to him. He's corny as fuck, and an arrogant piece of shit who actually believes, he's part of the team. I can't stand him. He's not exciting at all, he's an unprofessional buffoon! The fucking idiot was calling Evan gattis "Evan Goddis". Suzyn corrected him about 8 times, and he kept saying it wrong. He's fucking GARBAGE!
he dose mess up calls alot and may say stupid things from time to time but he has a PERFECT broadcasting voice. i dont have a single problem with listening to his home run calls or his calls when the yanks win because he shows emotion and i just cant stand the mono tone brodacasters that half of the league has they put me to sleep.
guess what. i am a HUGE rangers fan. I HATE THE YANKEES. i'm sorry it's out of good fun. but i must say, i LOVE this John Sterling guy. he is something else. the energy he brings to his calls is unmatched.
@Kdubslugga Harrelson. Ken Harrelson. And yes, he and Sterling tie for worst in baseball behind the mic. Both of them are so bad they're good if you get my drift.
John Sterling is great when he isn't completely confused as to whats happening on the air. Also the amount of dead air the broadcast has is embarrassing, as it is on the radio. Thats whats bad about Sterling, his home run calls, passion and excitement over the game IS NOT the problem. His voice is legendary also, all things considered I appreciate him, but its just about time he retires.
I love Sterling but thats because I am a diehard Yankees fan and love hearing a true homer like John call our games. If I was a Yankee hater I would probably dislike Sterling also.
@SXcore i agree with theeee yankees win thing, it should onli be used in 1st win, big wins, exciting wins, walk off wins, playoff clinching wins, n of course the postseason. not a boring game against an awful team like the orioles
Sterling was always colorful (colorful?) Some Sterling calls from the past included.. Islander Goal Islander Goal Islander Goal!....and, Bullseye, John Williamson! Sterling goes back a long way But he creates excitement for Yankee fans, true Yankee Fans. Everyone else hates him.
I'm a Red Sox fan and I think the Sox should make a trade for Sterling,he's the best in the businessPaplebon for Sterling.Even enjoy his home run calls.Johnny Damon with a "johnny rocket",LMAO!
I was at that game, no one stood up like they describe. How do the Yankees and WCBS continue to allow their broadcasts to become the laughing stock of Sportcenter updates???
I love listening to John Stirling- much prefer listen to him on the radio than watching Kay! Listen to him calling games in Ireland all season long! All they have to do now is to get rid of Suzyn bloody Waldman! She's the bane of that show!
Mike Francesa = The Godfather of Sports John Sterling = The Second Best Radio Broadcaster in Baseball since Ernie Harwell passed (First one is Vin Scully)
I'll take John Sterling, Ken Singleton or ANY of those guys over Ryan Ruocco any day. Who thought it was a good idea to have a guy with a lisp calling games?
The most common Sterling homerun call... This one is HI-I-IGH , this one is FA-A-ArR , this one is CA-UGHT ! How 'bout when he says the-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e- Yanke-e-ees Win !...sounds like he's getting his balls ripped out by a crazed rottweiler.. When's he gonna leave us poor Yankee fans alone?
Trust me I can understand how Sterling can be annoying to opposing fans but we love the guy. And JOE BUCK???? Are u kidding me right now?? That kid is horrible I can't stand that he had to call all the Yanks championships. Vin is legendary but he puts me to sleep.
sterling is great..non yankee fans jsut dont like him cuz they dont like how he keeps calling all the yankees wins..be jealous your teams not as good as ours
I've always found Mike Francesca to be a bitter and petty dude. He's always looking for something to mock. And, I will concede that he's had a decent broadcast career, but hell never be as beloved as John Sterling.
@newyorkstoryteller Just amazing that an organization that pulls in so much money a fucking year can't get some decent radio/tv announcers. Sterling, Kay, and Waldman are just atrocious.
great energy. great passion. but mr. sterling's "the yankeeeeeeeeeessssssssssss winnnn" is the most annoying phrase in all of sports. i even tried to like it but it's impossible. honestly, i can't even say it's an opinion that it sucks, it's a fact.
I'm an Yankee fan and I can say that Sterling is the most annoying announcer in history. I cannot stand him. Those home run calls are the most obnoxious pieces of air pollution ever! The worst is "Robbie Cano ... doncha know!" God I hate him.
As an embarassed Yankee fan, I'll say this: The problem with Sterling's obnoxious calls, (and any other announcer who has a home run 'catch phrase') is that looking back through history at all these calls, there's nothing to distinguish one play from another. They're all scripted. When the ball is hit, you know EXACTLY what the announcer is going to say. Radio calls especially should have some magic to them, and this type of 'formula' delivery completely destroys it.
Jack Buck, I'm sorry. Joe Buck is worse than Sterling. Vin puts you to sleep? LOL, no wonder you like Sterling. vin knows it's about the game , not him, unlike Sterling.
I'm a Yankee fan, and I'm embarrassed as hell to have this TOOL as "The voice of Yankee baseball". Can't wait until he's gone, then when you're listening to the game there will be somebody who can actually tell you what's going on. God, I'd kill to have Arod hit like that again.
