I love how this song has such a strong basis on his family life when he was young. He lost his brother when he was young. RIP Johnny Cash, my role model, join the family circle at the throne.
Here we have a legendary performance from The Johnny Cash Show on ABC from 1970....the sensational Carter Family, the unforgettable Statler Brothers, and of course the one and only Man in Black, the great Johnny Cash.
To Noah Doolan-I'm with yo- u, brother. I'm old school as well. I grew up in the 70s & 80s listening to Johnny Cas h, Kenny Rogers, etc. To me country music died when G arth Brooks, Billy Ray Cyrus, Lorrie Morgan & others cam e along.
Listen to this song every time a family member or friend passes. Something about singing makes a loss less painful. "One of these days, and it won't be long, I'll rejoin them in a song. I'm gonna join the family circle at the throne. In the sky, Lord, in the sky."
According to Johnny himself, the line "Me and little brother will join right in there" was written by Carl Perkins about his brother, Jack, who died when they were both boys.
WIth the sad passing of Harold Reid yesterday, only two people in this clip are left alive. See you in the family circle at the throne, Harold. RIP Harold Reid, Lew DeWitt, Johnny Cash, June Carter Cash, Mother Maybelle, Anita Carter, and Helen Carter.
What a classic video. All of the Carter family girls and the early Statler brothers, whom Johnny gave them their big boost to stardom. Johnny helped so many. RIP Johnny.
My mom attached herself to this song when we finally lost my grandma. She had finally lost both of her parents. I lost both of my grandparents. I too now cling to this song and I don't have her memories, but it kill me to think that someday, I will lose my parents, too.
A few days before my grandma died, she explained the meaning of this song while it was playing. She was a huge Johnny Cash fan. I was touched by the meaning, especially when she was just diagnosed with cancer and in hospice. She wasn’t one to be sentimental either. The next morning she had a horrible stroke that made her unable to communicate and she rapidly declined from there. When she was getting close to passing, but not able to let go, I kept humming this song to her. I didn’t know the melody 100% but I improvised. It was the meaning and intent that mattered. My aunt got into too if I remember right. This was a pivotal moment when we expressed acceptance of her passing and that we’ll be okay. She finally died about an hour later. We were relieved for her, and celebrated by playing her absolute favorite songs One Bourbon One Scotch and Bad to the Bone by George Thorogood. Yesterday, 5/2/19, was 7 years since her passing 🌤💐 HEY Oddone! Stop looking at me! You looked at me first!! 😜 You know I *might* actually miss you if you weren’t intruding in my dreams so much! Don’t you have better things to do?😂 Love you so much Grandma!!! 💕💕💕
If her favourite songs were Bad to the Bone and One Bourbon, One Scotch,... by George Thoroughgood, you had one heck of a top cool gran. Sorry for your loss.
I am going to see George Thorogood in May. I have set a reminder on my phone to think of your grandma during the show. I'm glad you had peace with her passing.
I heard that Johnny Cash wrote that song while he was still married, so he gave the credit to June so his ex-wife wouldn't get any profit from it. I understand that perfectly. And Johnny was taking drugs before he even met June Carter, so calm down, misinformed people in the comments section. June was great for Johnny. They had a deep and real love. No one can ever take that away from them.
I had just read in a Country Music Article last week that this was the NO.1 Gospel Song of the 20th Century! Thanks Mr. Johnny Cash and writer Carl Perkins. This is purely beautiful! No one has ever been bigger than Johnny Cash in any form of music!
the slight swing in june's line is way better on this live than on any recording i've found. love it. her smile is also brilliant. i've been sitting here smiling for ages like an idiot !
I think the original was Jan Howard, so for whatever reason June didn't sing the original line, which is why it sounds better here, no disprespect to Jan Howard!
This song always makes me think of my dad. When I was a kid we'd go on drives and listen to Johnny cash and sing along. This will always be one of my favorite songs.
Johnny Cash really turned country music into a huge, wonderful thing. I wish we had someone like him now. I don't think I've listened to new country music since Hannah Montana. And that was the thin end of the wedge.
Really didn't like country until I discovered Johnny. I knew his Ring of Fire song , but I couldn't name another song he did. This last year, I turned 50 and decided to watch Little House of Prairie. Johnny and his wife were guest stars on season 3 episode 1. I was blown away with Johnny's acting performance, so I dug deeper into his music. For the first time in 50 years I can say that I am now interested in country music and it all started with Johnny Cash. What an awesome talent he was.
*A Bit of Trivia : In the original recording of Daddy Sang Bass, it is Jan Howard who sings " Mama Sang Tenor ". Everyone assumes it is June Carter because it is her in the Live Shows.*
My family used to sit in the living room singing this when I was a kid, 10 of us in all, still brings a lump to my throat, especially since 2 of my brothers have gone ahead of us
I'm Ukrainian by birth. Moved to Canada at the age of 24 . I'm 43 now. And although i could not have possibly had any exposure to johnny cash culture .... I love every song of his. The meaning , the melody and his charisma !! He's the best . One of my favorite singers . And through me , my daughters got thoroughly acquainted with Him ! They love him too
What a lovely performance! Johnny Cash' voice always keeps me out of the cold. Beautiful song by Carl Perkins, a great figure from Sun Records (all Southern men, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, Roy Orbison, and of course Elvis!) Blessings for all of them who surely are jamming in Heaven.
Johnny and June are now in that glorious circle. I can't wait to sing with them in Heaven. Yes, I believe in Jesus and the fact that there is a reward after this.
+raleighman3000 Don't tell people they're wrong for what they believe, grow up. And I don't believe in God by the way, that doesn't mean I'm unable to have even a shred of respect for the belief of those that do. And that goes for any religion, from Islam to Jainism and everything in between. People like you are just as bad as the religious zealots that tell everyone they're going to hell for not sharing their beliefs.
+raleighman3000 why are you commenting that. You don't actually know that know body knows that so do not tell anyone to grow up. That is there belief, mine and many others. Then there are many people who don't believe and that is yours. Saying to grow up to a believe is like saying grow up to someone else who does not believe. It is a matter of an opinion and that is all. Please be considerate of that thank you. (Yes this is mine)
My favorite songs: -Daddy Sang Bass (Duh) -Folsom Prison Blues -Cocaine Blues -Ring Of Fire -I Got Stripes -24 Minutes To Go -Orange Blossom Special -Busted -And every single gospel song by him 😊 Love his music 😄😄
I've been given that "wtf?!" look too by people when driving, but crap em'! I don't care! I will always blast Johnny Cash, Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, Little Richard, Roy Orbison, Ritchie Valens, Chuck Berry, Buddy Holley, Big Bopper and all the other great pioneers of Rock n' Roll/Country music of the 50's n 60's. Even though I was born in 92', I want people to remember the classic stars who's lights have always shined bright and who's music never died despite what Don McLean said lol.
And I always cherish people who blasts the good old music while driving! I was born in the 80s but a part of my musical soul belongs to the good music...
I love the 80's too! 50's through early 90's. When I'm driving there's no telling what I'm blaring out of my car. It could be Johnny Cash, Alice Cooper, Sly & The Family Stone, Prince, Rod Stewart, Hall & Oates... You get the picture lol. I love all the genres and decades. Except for today's. I used to like it, but my freshman year of high school I bought a Billy idol cd, and that all changed! I dug into every decade and found the music I really loved (:
Yes, none of us ever really die...cause as the Bible says, "and he being dead yet speaketh" (Heb. 11:4). We all cast an influence, even after we're dead and gone!! :)
both awesome groups. they were quite friendly with each other, and had a bit of a rivalry too, but a friendly rivalry. both groups spoke highly of the other and did sing together on a few occasions.
This is my favorite Johnny Cash song. I really love this particular version. Thank you for posting. If you by chance have more videos, I would greatly appreciate to see more.
I did a double take when they show the Statlers, listened to them with my parents, but was too young to know they used to sing with the Man in Black. ;)
"I remember when I was a lad Times were hard and things were bad But there's a silver linin' behind every cloud Just poor people, that's all we were Tryin' to make a livin' out of black land dirt We'd get together in a family circle singin' loud Daddy sang bass Mama sang tenor Me and little brother would join right in there Cause singin' seems to help a troubled soul One of these days it won't be long I'll rejoin them in a song I'm gonna join the family circle at the Throne Oh no, the circle won't be broken By and by, Lord, by and by Daddy sang bass Mama sang tenor Me and little brother would join right in there In the sky, Lord, in the sky I remember after work Mama would call in all of us You could hear us singin' for a country mile Now little brother has done gone on But, I'll rejoin him in a song We'll be together again up yonder in a little while Daddy sang bass Mama sang tenor Me and little brother would join right in there Cause singin' seems to help a troubled soul One of these days it won't be long I'll rejoin them in a song I'm gonna join the family circle at the Throne Oh, no the circle won't be broken By and by, Lord, by and by Daddy sang bass Mama sang tenor Me and little brother would join right in there In the sky, Lord, in the sky Yes in the sky, Lord, in the sky"
I wish that Johnny Cash was still alive. And the Statler Brothers would sing again. But I am happy that Johnny Cash is up in Heaven and can't wait to see him. I know that Lou Dewitt had passed away and I felt bad but I know that Jimmy Fortune took after Lou in the 1980s but I knew that Lou passed away in 1990. But I really wish that Johnny Cash was around and June Carter around and Statler Brothers singing again so it would be as good as this video. It would be as good as the old times.
I once had a limited collectors edition magazine that was only about johnny cash. I wish I hadn't got rid of it. I often wonder how much it would of been worth if I sold it last year or earlier this year.
coming from a guy who grew up in New York and listens strictly to heavy metal and old-school rap, Johnny Cash is the fucking man ! Disclaimer That girl is an absolute smokeshow
