Apparently the studio (or whoever) was not happy with the ending where the young boy kills Sweeney. They thought it was too dark. But Tim Burton just refused to change it. Me, personally, I think it works perfectly.

I was in a production of this show in my home state of Washington, it's an absolute masterpiece and pretty well adapted in this film. Also, fun fact, they cast Johnny Depp without knowing if he could sing, they were spending millions on the film and had never heard him sing before, thankfully he managed to pull it off.

Johnny Depp starred in Crybaby from 1990 which was a musical, so they may have already known he could sing. It was a different type of singing but its been known for a while that he is in a band too.

Primate, this should set you off on a Tim Burton filmography binge, his work is so weird but human at the same time, this movie is timeless, the story is so tragic and deaths are so exaggerated and poetic, I like how music was used to set the heavy mood throughout, musicals are a hit and miss for me, but this is an all time hit

I love this film! It's one of my favourite Tim Burton/ Johnny Depp films. A musical/ film i'd absolutely love for you to watch is Tick, Tick... BOOM! It came out last November, it's starring Andrew Garfield (Amazing Spiderman) and was directed by Lin Manuel Miranda (his directorial debut) who played Hamilton in Hamilton obviously, and it's based on a true story. I watched it for the first time this Tuesday and it honestly hasn't left my mind since

My mom and me watched Musical movies growing up. I have so many favorites The Phantom Of the Opera, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, The Kind and I, Annie, Phantom of the Paradise, Rumpelstiltskin. I highly recommend both Moulin Rouge, and Repo The Genetic Opera. Just to clear things up, his wife did poison herself only she didn't die and suffered from burns on her face. She became homeless and watching Joanna from the window outside the Judges house for 15 years. It's very sad.

Nice! Love this movie. Saw it as an off-broadway production in New York about five years ago. Took place in a pie shop and they served pies before the show. Sweeney Todd jumped on people's tables and slashed his knife at us. And then on the way back to our hotel we got to ride with Judge Turpin. What a fun night

If you liked this and want to discover more musicals, I really have to recommend "Starkid" They produce and post musicals for free right here on RU-vid and they're good! Their early work is more parody based "A very Potter musical" "Holy musical Batman" "Twisted" and "Trail to Oregon" is all based on something from pop culture and they do a good job with it. Then their later work is more serious.. "the guy who didn't like musicals" and "Black Friday" are apart of the 'Hatchetfield' trilogy and the songs are fire!..imo. You don't have to react to them but I'd bet my money that you'd enjoy them! Their Harry Potter musical is iconic, but do check out "the guy who didn't like musicals" for a nice twist on the whole "musical" thing.

TBH… I usually don’t compare remakes/reboots, but… As a fan of the original stage show (Which you REALLY do need to check out for yourself!), as visually cool as this flick is, there’s so much missing in this interpretation. Sure! While Depp & Rickman were alright here, Sasha Baron Cohen & Helena Bonham Carter were truly miscast. (THERE! I said it!) The young man playing “Toby” was terrific, though! My real issue with this flick is how Burton traded the almost delicious dark humor, for the gore! (Don’t get the wrong idea… My handle is, “BUTCHER’”, as I ran a “Butcher Shop”, in a local haunted house, long ago.😉) But… The downplayed, “A Little Priest” especially, just had me distracted & disappointed, throughout the rest of the picture. REALLY! Check out the 1981 stage version, starring George Hearn & Angela Lansbury! 😉 Best to you & yours, especially on this Independence Day holiday! 😁🇺🇸

The thing that continues to amuse me greatly is Stephen Sondheim’s stated purpose in writing this musical. “I wanted to see if I can scare people during a musical.” 😂 The reason lacks depth yet he did not phone in the work whatsoever. Many consider Sweeney Todd to be his masterpiece. I’ve been a huge Sondheim fan for 20+ years now, so it was cool to see you appreciating/vibing with the music and lyrics. Sondheim’s life was rather unusual and wrote music that really spoke to the human condition. Some of his shows had really unique concepts, with the most interesting arguably being ‘Assassins.’ Its cast of characters: individuals who attempted to unalive~ US Presidents.

Depp was AWFUL as Sweeney. The show is a black comedy and he only played Sweeney as dark, angry, brooding, and sinister. While Sweeney is all those things but what Depp totally left out was Sweeney's HUMOR. Even WORSE was Bonham-Carter as Mrs. Lovett. She was all-psycho and none of her amazing humor or her joie de vivre. Both leads were flat, one-note characters and boring. You want the REAL Sweeney Todd? Watch Angela Lansbury and George Hearn. THAT'S how you play Sweeney and Mrs. Lovett.

@@christiecakes014 well I've read the script for Sweeney Todd, and I have seen it multiple times live. It's a black comedy. Half of that phrase is the word comedy. That means it has humor in it of which they're performances had none.

As in my comment, I totally agree with you. I don't hold the actors accountable for bad direction choices however. As you point out, actors that can sing (like Lansbury and Hearn) should be the ones chosen to be in a musical. This film is 100% Burton and although I don't generally dislike him as a director, he made a ton of mistakes with this film. Lighting, framing, shot selections and those ghastly blue filters. About the only thing they got right were the costumes and the majority of set design choices.

@@christiecakes014 Absolutely correct, the blame rests totally on Burton and his choices.

Thanks primate! I wrote the movie and asked that Stephen Sondheim be given credit for being such an inspiration and being so great. Your reaction was a blessing that I am grateful for 💓

So glad you enjoyed this! Im sure they exist but I don't think Ive ever heard of anyone who didn't like this movie, including people I know personally. You should check out Moulin Rouge and Across The Universe. I think you'd enjoy those as well.

You should react to "The Sound of Music"! It's the best mix ever of regular acting and songs, beautiful songs! And really... just one of the best movies ever! Based on a true story. With Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer.
