Johnny Herbert Interview | Beyond The Grid | Official F1 Podcast

This week on Beyond The Grid, presented by Bose, we’re joined by Johnny Herbert, a man for whom the phrase ‘triumph over adversity’ seems tailor made. Herbert’s career came to an abrupt halt when he suffered horrific damage to his feet in an F3000 crash. But, as he tells host Tom Clarkson, he refused to let his potentially life-changing injuries stand in the way of his dream of racing in Formula 1 and winning Grands Prix.

Every week I hear people hating on Herbert for acting a happy fool on Sky. I hope after listening to his story, they can appreciate his positivity better. PS.: Know who I'd honestly really like to feature? Lance Stroll. It's an absolute delight listening to these legends - adding juicy bits to a tale and a person who we, by and large, already know, but it's always great to recall. Someone like Lance though... like most of the new generation, he's an absolute mystery as a person. Despite the massive media presence these days, it feels like we know less and less about the new drivers because they're always "on", only giving small and maybe misleading tips about who they are behind the helmet. TC's intimist style is perfect for that. Ocon and Gasly's interviews were brilliant, so I look forward to more interviews with their generation - Lance above all because of how controversial the circumstances around him are.

TugaAvenger - I’ve not heard any ‘haters’ with respect to Johnny Herbert - who I see as a great character - full of laughter and positivity. Anyone who criticises him for being like this - is just a really sad pathetic person who only sees negativity in people. Not the type I’d want to spend any time with - that’s for sure !! Rx

Johnny Herbert is an absolute champion driver. He piloted the 787B Mazda R26B to Outright VICTORY in Le Mans and did so only to be so exhausted he couldn't make it on to the podium. His input in to the FD3S RX-7 around the NÜR has given it sublime handling that beat Porsche THREE TIMES in Australian production endurance racing and still rivals modern cars today. Johnny, you're a legend and a fantastic commentator. Thanks for your contribution to the motoring industry. I tip my hat to you 🇦🇺🏁

Max G piss off mate. What type of moronic comment is that? Everyone had an opportunity to win but Mazda finally had a package that was fast enough to cause everyone else to push harder and then one by one they started to break. You obviously have never been apart of racing to have made that comment. Toyota was lucky this year BECAUSE THERE WAS NO COMPETITION! That's a FACT!

I met Johnny at Heathrow after Jerez where he was trying to get out of Lotus. I asked him how his race weekend went and he said it had been really shit. I then mentioned that Peter Collins would not let him leave. He slapped me on the back and said (laughing) 'yes, another Australian bastard'. I'm pleased to say that I saw his first two wins in F1. I was aware that he must have felt pain but never realized how much there had been. I had heard about the grass in his ankles. Anyway, a great and informative interview. Thanks.

Those that followed Johnny's career would know just how good he really was pre-Brands Hatch 88. Many top industry experts were not far wrong when they said he was the most naturally gifted driver since Clark. I was a huge follower, having followed his rise through the ranks. Brands Hatch has played a pivotal role in Johnny's pre-F1 career. I have always been a huge Herbert fan and the turning point was def that weekend in August 1988. I remember it like it was yesterday. We were at druids on that fateful day and it started so well too. Johnny was leading Donnelly by some good few seconds and in complete control. Setting fastest lap after fastest lap. That was part 1 of the race and the rest, as they say, was history. The bang and commotion we heard were harrowing and then the silence after was sickening. I didn't see the actual crash, but the aftermath was there for all to see. That day was the turning point in Johnny's career and left many asking "what if". Imho, Johnny would have gone on to much greater things had that day not unfolded as it did!
@jamesdyer7960

Spot on. I was on the inside of the circuit just before Pilgrims Drop and literally saw the accident with Foitek first hand where Herbert went into the Bridge wall bounced back off and then it all carried on down the hill out of sight. The worst crash I ever saw trackside. No doubt at all Johnny was WDC material. Donnelly would have had a great F1 career too f not for Jerez in '90.

A truly fascinating interview. I don't feel simple admiration like the interviewer - I feel much more sadness about the psychology of someone who does that to themself. It's incredibly impressive to push yourself like that, but it also takes an unhealthy obsessiveness. How sad that he put himself through pain to the point he wants his legs cut off. He says it was worth it for what he attained, but it seems tragic to me that he rushed back for his career instead of resting and taking a few years for his body to heal. The fact he hid it from his wife is telling - that's a disturbing comment... There's something off about his humour and laughter too. That joke about regretting it? He just seems one removed from himself. What kind of childhood does someone have to make them that way? A staggering will to win to the point of destroying your body. What an extraordinary man.
