A few decades ago and for some reason, Johnny returned to his adopted home town of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where he performed a free, outdoor concert, on the grounds of the Old State Capitol. Almost no one showed up!! I did and was standing at the stage, directly in front of Johnny. He played all his hits beautifully. When he left the stage, I asked the drummer if I could have Johnny's guitar pick. I still have it. Says "Johnny Rivers" on it!😊
@@jerryadkins5058 - Mostly NOT true! He wrote many songs that were covered by others. To apply your generalization to others, Elvis Presley was also mainly a COVER ARTIST! Many of Elvis's hits, especially the early ones were "borrowed" from Black Singers that main stream radio stations refused to play their music. Credit to Elvis and Ricky Nelson for covering these songs and bringing much needed attention to them. Sorry lad, no disrespect, but Johnny Rivers definitely should be in the so-called Rock n Roll Hall of Fame. But differing opinions are appreciated!
Rock hall of fame is not an honor or anything of merit anymore.NWA and britney speard are in it i think.if not.theres trash like that stuffed in there.johnnys above that shit show
Yes it was and still love hearing the older Roll and Roll music. I have a great stereo system in the garage and you can hear it 3 to 4 house down from me.
I read, "it was doomed to obscurity due to the reference to Sgt Pepper's Lonely heart Club Band" & that's because of copyright laws and payments each time the record would be played on radio.
Johnny Rivers, The Guess Who, The Doobie Brothers etc... Look how long it took them to get Deep Purple and Chicago. Jann Werner has too much control over it.
He is really something special. I love him. since I was about 3 yrs old. My Mom turned me onto him. Miss them both. I do not know if his recent dead was a hoax or not. This is where I got it from. "“At about 11 a.m. ET on Thursday (February 06, 2020), our beloved singer Johnny Rivers passed away. Johnny Rivers was born on November 7, 1942 in New York. He will be missed but not forgotten. Please show your sympathy and condolences by commenting on and liking this page.” Then I find out otherwise so I am confused and pissed. dusty the 2nd. Anyone want to enlighten me? Thx Dusty the 2nd.
Those of us Baby Boomers who's youth and memories remain frozen in the 60's know THAT era of magical music would never have been complete without Johnny Rivers.
Proud Boomer here to give you a huge AMEN!! My two older sisters played these records constantly. I thank them for my love of music today...God rest their souls.
This song is now so iconic a description of 1967 and the era that followed it should be the anthem of the 60's. Rivers was surely an underrated writing talent. The arrangement of the orchestra totally supports the poetic description of the lyrics. The chord progression shows a longing mood to return to the idealistic feeling of our youth. The mere mention of Sgt. Pepper punctuates the whole idea of the song. Anyone who doesn't get it did not live in the era or was asleep with a crew cut head.
@@garyblanchard1084 Same age as you. I must have heard it for the first time around 5? 6? 7?. .. whenever it was, it left an impression on me. I get a weird happy nostalgic feeling when I hear it. I suspect that the first time I heard it, there was some sort of special event. Ie an old school friend of my dads came to visit, had a couple of beers, chatted laughed and listened to the radio. Something like that. kids gravitate towards music and laughter.
Who cares about the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame? For a long time, the right wing corporatists frowned on people who opposed the Viet Nam War. Johnny Rivers didn't get in because he didn't support the War. Karl
I see that I'm a woman with a mission I had no idea that Johnny Rivers was not in the Rock and roll Hall of Fame oh come on people let's get them there he is fabulous what a voice I'm still listening to his music today and I think he was probably from the early to mid 60s I mean come on his music still stands up today thank you Johnny Rivers!
Johnny Rivers recorded sooooo many good songs. This is from back when singers could actually sing without auto tuners. Johnny not only sang many great hits, but also helped other artists by passing off songs to them. That and he helped with the Monterey Pop Festival........the man was so much more than just someone who sang a song!
Memories, my brother was home finished his enlistment Vietnam. He was home 28 days and we reconnected and he was surprised to find his little brothers into this music. My other brother, also now dead, got them from some music mail system. My Brother home from Vietnam connected with his best high school buddy also home as lost his right leg in Vietnam both were killed in a car accident. We lived in true hell for a long time after we buried him. Me and my other brother lost ourselves in albums he got in the mail order system, Columbia House I believe. Lived in rural America so there was no grief groups and so forth. This music got us through hell and back. Thank God for music.
living life on this planet can be a rough experience...but i believe were all in this "school of hard knocks" for a reason...to grow up in knowledge and learn about+ become LOVE!..I think thats why were "HERE" in the 1st place...to WAKE us UP! Are you AWAKE yet? No...too bad ...here comes some more "bad stuff" then... Namaste.
This, the Doors, Sly and the Family Stone, Canned Heat, The CHAMBERS BROTHERS ( Time Has Come Today ) got me through Vietnam, and the rough times after.
Keith Fields right before I got drafted, we actually tried to kill ourselves the way we acted, fast cars, fast women, a whole lot of drinking, good times, would change a lot of things if I could go back , not this music though😉😉😉😋😋🤪🤪
I haven't heard this song in so long. What a beautiful song and so many memories. In 1967 I was dating a girl named Sandra. She was so much fun and sooo cute, but after a while she wanted to date others which I never really understood. Sometimes when she did I would park in the transmission shop across the street in my '62 Pontiac listening to my 8 track tape of Johnny Rivers greatest hits to make sure there wasn't anything going on on her front porch. Well, in Feb. 1968 I went in the Air Force and by the time I was discharged we were married, we had a child, two cars in the garage and the white picket fence. This past Feb, we celebrated 52 years together. Hard to believe.
@@garymorgan1356 This was a few months before I went in the A. F. By the time I went in we both knew we would marry. As for the front porch thing, I honestly couldn't see that well.
TheFishMiester I have 45's, 33 1/3 lp albums from the sixties. Who really cares what the r&r hof people say. He was great, I still listen to him so do you and many others, that's recogonition isn't it?
Only the people that become puppets to the big shots get in there. Johnny Rivers is too good for that. He’ll always be in his true fans’ Hall of Fame. We love you, Johnny!♥️♥️
Johnny has such a beautiful unique voice. Summer Rain has always been a special song to me, i've always loved it. Johnny Rivers will always be one of my favorite artists. His talent is endless.
Been a fan of his since about 8 years old ..every single song of his is definitely a hit ...p.s. Looking forward to meeting you at Commerce Casino ..LOVE ELAINE AND MIC CHEQ 1. 2
Rivers is a Hall of Famer. Overlooked for some crazy reason. Poor Side of Town -- that song, which makes everyone weep, alone should have gotten him in. And there are many others.
To this day, it takes me back in time, when we all loved America and accepted the president of either party. Johnny Rivers music was awesome and incredibly wonderful. Johnny Rivers was a Juggernaut at that time.
Yes I am with you on that account. Who ever thought I would be "responsible, practical a vegetable a criminal"?(Lyrics Owned by Supertramp) but that is real for me. Love Johnny Rivers I was a very young girl and my Mom used to play him all the time. I fell in love with his lyrics and music from the gate.Cannot believe I am still here after all I have done and been through. 6 grandkids I guess. Dusty the 2nd.
@Catherine Hazur i hear you sis...a lot of people r scared right now..but i think this "corona" thing is actually going to be a blessing in disguise...people are changing for the better + saying"were all in this thing TOGETHER"...its raising the collective consciousness of the planet to a level never experienced before...remember that every "cloud has a silver lining" Peace and LOVE from an old "Flower child"/Mike the Bike.
@Catherine Hazur Maybe YOU are not evolving or progressing in any way,but I sure am.....Im the happiest I've ever been in my life...I've been meditating since 1970 and have had many mystical and OBE(out of body) experiences which were totally mindblowing! I've met my "spirit Guides" or Gaurdian Angels twice + met Jesus once while out of my body+ I've never been the same since talking to Him..(telepathic.no physical speech). As Christ has said :The KIngdom of Heaven is within you" seek and you shall find" Thats exactly what I have done and the results far outweigh the long hours of steady meditating I've done over the years...This is the "Blossom time" Jesus foretold of over 2000 years ago...Its an exciting time to be alive right now..what a adventure were in for! I can't wait to see how it all unfolds! Light and LOVE to all sentient beings! NAMASTE.
***** Hello ... Hal Blaine, who was sorta of the leader of "The Wrecking Crew" (L.A. studio musicians) plays the drums on the whole album. Hal Blaine, played on over 6,000 hit RPM records! He is a gracious man and a pleasure to talk to. The best drummer in my mind along with Russ Kunkel and Earl Palmer. Between them - they played on just about every song recorded from the late 50's to mid 80's. I might add the bassist is Joe Osborn and is Larry Kenechtel on keyboards, those 3 guys played together on almost all the projects they were involved with. Hal Blaine said once, "the toughest part of the day wasn't recording 16-18 straight but just getting a parking space in downtown Los Angeles :). Hope that helps .. Roger C.
Dear Jennifur, Hello there. I'm 65-years old and started collecting autographs back in 1959. I need several of the FUNK BROTHERS. I believe you mentioned in one of your comments on RU-vid that you had a relative that was a member. Please contact me at: bossman1959@gmail.com... my name is Roger Christensen. I still collect autographs - still music and the FUNK BROTHERS - ARE MOTOWN ANSWER TO LOS ANGELES' THE WRECKING CREW. THEY BOTH added so much to our lives in the music. I have seen the TV show on the Funk Brothers about 4 times - and someone out there must have some autographs and addresses - I would pay for any help in that area. Thanks Again, Roger
@@mikebudzinski3879 Actually, the Beastie Boys delivered one of the most influential albums in Music History - PAUL'S BOUTIQUE in 1989. Listen to it and be Amazed.
Having grown up in the sixties, I remember every summer was marked with a Rivers song. The fact he referenced The Beatles in this tune shows how important they were in the music scene.
I bought a CD at a JR concert, front and back of the cover were pics of him with the Beatles. I think at some point they signed him to a record deal and i believe they had been good friends.
1967 miles and Walter Reed Army Hospital recovering from my wounds overseas and this song came out man I was digging it man just sitting back in my wheelchair and digging this tune and till this day I still dig it brings back a lot of memories thank you Johnny
Unfortunately everything in life has become politicized and there are many unjust and undeserving that are in and many that are not. I personally have no respect for these organizations that lack integrity or morals.
That's why some of us call it. The Rock and Roll Hall of SHAME. They ever get Johnny in there. They just may get their orginal name back respectfullly. The Rock and Roll Hall of FAME.
Wow! I have not heard this tune in years, and it was played on our local radio station in Pittsburgh for years! If there were fan voting for Johnny Rivers to be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, I'd put in my vote! I really loved the hits he did, especially this classic from 1968. Why it didn't make the top ten, I'll never know. Why they keep overlooking this man for induction, I'll never know that either!
Oh, the tunes are there. Summer Rain is wonderful, but don't write off new music. You just have to look, and the landscape has changed. I'm a Vietnam guy and love the old music too. But our kids and grandkids are worried about different things and the music adjusted and there's a ton of great stuff out there.
Three years after you wrote your comment a new Summer Rain was released; nothing to do with this but a very beautiful song. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-V297D6mEw9A.html
Did you know Johnny Rivers is the one who helped Glen Campbell get famous? . I was in California in the mid 80,s and was working in construction in Hollywood. I was just a nobody and I dropped in on Johnny Rivers small studio and was greeted very warm. I told the secretary my parents were big fans and she gave me 2 pictures signed by Johnny Rivers. 1 was him playing at a Major League Baseball game. My parents cherished these pics and still listen to Johnny Rivers. Now I find myself doing the same🙂👍
I feel most fortunate to have lived in an era when life was simple & the music was real, no one had anger in their hearts or thoughts of terror, naive I might have been but oh how I miss those times.
Josh Blakesley-the first time i heard Sgt.Peppers was on Haight Street,in 1967,on an 8-track-someone had their car pulled up to the curb and it had a lot of people crowded around it.
I cried hearing him sing this in concert. It just overwhelmed me, the memories. He was very gracious and talked to fans afterward a long time. About 6 yrs ago.
Summer Rain -- Lyrics Summer rain taps at my window West wind soft as a sweet dream My love warm as the sunshine Sittin' here by me, She's here by me She stepped out of a rainbow Golden hair shinin' like moon glow Warm lips soft as a soul Sittin' here by me, She's here by me All summer long we spent Dancin' in the Sand And the Jukebox kept on playin' Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band We sailed into the sunset Drifted home caught by a gulf stream Never gave a thought for tomorrow Just let tomorrow be now, Let tomorrow be She Wants to live in the Rockies She says that's where we'll find peace Settle down raise up a family To call our own, yeah, We'll have a home All summer long we spent Groovin' in the sand Everybody kept on playin' Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band Well snow drifts by my window North wind blowin' like thunder Our love's burnin' like fire And she's here by me, yeah, She's here with me, Let tomorrow be
One of the most Beautiful pieces of poetry every writer to go onto the sheet of As Lyrics I still play today on my Guitar has been one of my standards for over 40yrs
"Never gave a thought for tomorrow just let tomorrow be🎵 Absolutely Timeless Lyrics; GREAT JOB!! MAKES ME FEEL GOOD TO HEAR THIS SONG OF A BETTER TIME.THESE SONGS WILL NEVER BE RE-DONE. AGREE??
One of the songs I remember from my younger days. I was a 20 year old in 1968 when this song was popular on the radio in both Los Angeles and San Diego. I was in the US Navy at the time training on US Swift Boats in Coronado, Ca. in preparation for my deployment to Vietnam. Hell of a time as I remember and we enjoyed the best music in my lifetime. Mark Bell PCF-69
Bob Dylan even said in an interview one of the best covers of his "Positively 4th Street" was to be found on an LP by Johnny Rivers. What an endorsement. The man can sing, play, write songs, has produced artists such as the 5th Dimension & like Dion, Chubby Checker & Bobby Rydell -- is still recording & performing. No R&R Hall of Fame? Yeah, right.
Johnny. Should be a national treasure! First meet him when I was 17. Wrote songs for him when was 19! Now 61. Golden voice and plays his guitar like a Southern boy should!!
If you have never listened to this LP in its entirety, you owe it to yourself to do so. Johnny says it is his favorite project of all time, and you'll agree if you take it all in.
Man, we boomers got to skim all the cream off the American dream, we were in the right place at the right time, great music, girls, muscle cars and a lot more freedom
You could go anywhere day or night, nobody would bother you, if you needed help, somebody would always stop and help you. I grew up in Southern California. It was like Heaven on Earth.
I bought this the Realization album shortly after it was released. I could tell a difference in the Johnny Rivers style of music with this particular song. The psychedelic colors on the album were a truth that the music was changing. I have always loved everything that Johnny recorded. He is a blessing to the music industry.
Warm lips soft as her soul!! WORDS TO LIVE BY !!!!I will always keep this album close to my heart! ! That whole album is fantastic! I love to drive Pacific Coast Highway listening to Johnny!!!! Minnnie Romero
That summer we really did dance to nothing but Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, it's really true! That greatest of the great Album made us feel like the most important people in the world, although we were very young! I love this beautiful song, he was there! He saw it! He saw the Magic fill the air!
Now, at 70 years, I still reflect on the 'summer of 67' as being the best three months of my life, dancing on the sands of Cape Cod with a strawberry blonde from Ohio I met while working at the same seafood restaurant
A magical time in music history with this song being a big part of that time that is the most incredible time in music history. Bless all the great musicians that brought this music at a time that won't ever be duplicated. Thank you so much. Blessed to live in this time history. So lucky.
Dear Bobbie ... Hey it took my favorites, THE RIGHTEOUS BROTHERS, until 2003 to get their just rewards. They were literally unique and great. And yes, Johnny Rivers should have been voted in long ago. I truly miss Bobby Hatfield. Roger C..
***** Bobby and Bill came to San Jose, CA in 1963 - the first time I got to meet them. They had Little Latin Lupe Lu out and it was a BIG hit. I have collected autographs since 1959 - thus, I have literally gotten to know the performers - as people. Some are very nice and some aren't. Bobby and Bill were the best, along with Glen Campbell and I could go on. Thanks for the reply. Roger C.
we sailed into a sunset, drifted home, caught by a gulf stream. never gave a thought for tomorrow, just let tomorrow be, she's here with me... Best lyrics ever.
Hoje completam 09 anos que a minha mãe se foi. Ela adorava as músicas do Johnny Rivers. Estou aqui agora, ouvindo essas canções em lágrimas, enquanto lembro da minha amada mãe.
Comments are great, One misconception is that is when people say "He was". was ? I believe J.R. is still alive and still kicking, so lets say He is". He is not underrated either. maybe underplayed is a better word. He's a great live performer.
Not only is he still alive but he is still fantastic! I finally had the chance to see him perform live and he was amazing! Have been a fan since the sixties and I wasn't expecting too much from him at this point and after all these years, but I should have! He was all-in and sounded great, better than ever! Just had to say...
You are absolutely accurate. I think if he had to join a group that needed another lead singer, superb guitarist & songwriter The Band would have been it.
@@ruthiekumar8770 @ That was the style. Guys returning from the Nam, get out and get it on. I got the 5 month early out. Only had to spent about 17 1/2 months in service. But a year in Vietnam.
