The latest Sonic the Hedgehog game is here! With recreated levels from the past, a team-up of paradoxical proportions, and no sign of any game-changing gimmicks, is Sonic Generations truly a great game? Let's find out.
No wonder I've come to dislike certain series now (looking at you, Pokemon and going back to the old ways after doing so well with Gen 5. I know that Gen is a debated Gen, but damn it was refreshing compared to the new stuff.)
@@mr.morningstar8350 oh I agree. I just feel like if you stick to the same thing but somehow make things worse it’s gonna make that formula wear thin after a while *cough cough forces cough cough*
i remember being so excited when this video came out as a ten year old, then proceeded to watch this at least ten times a month for the next six months
Narrative: Average Sound: Great Visuals: Great Mechanics: Good Overall Rating: 8.5 out of 10 To this day, "Sonic Generations" is my favorite Modern Era game in the series. A love letter to all Sonic fans, young and old. I sincerely hope that SEGA uses the foundation they've built here and make tweaks (primarily the storyline) for future titles.
I guess you didn't want to take the time out of your day to look up either reviews or what johnny said about it huh. For one thing, the wisps are hollow versions of Sonic Colors, ruining game flow. Also, point difference in just reviews... www.gamerankings.com/xbox360/627224-sonic-generations/index.html and www.gamerankings.com/wii-u/715775-sonic-lost-world/index.html. Definitely not a better game. Even Johnny said at the end of his Sonic Boom review that "Even Lost World is a better game than this... but I recommend the classic Sonic series, Sonic Colors, and Sonic Generations WAY over this."
Good Point. You said the story was better (even though it's completely one note in my opinion... and Johnny and critics) but also you said GAMEPLAY not CONTROLS. Gameplay is an EXTREMELY broad topic. Gameplay covers Game Design, Levels, and controls. Also, even if you did mean controls, the parkour system is completely stupid in 2d section, constantly having to stop using the run button (even though... it's a sonic game). Also, Lost World is a copycat of Mario Galaxy.
I don't remember having to stop to look at the Wii U screen in colors. I don't remember being completely wonky using the stupid bird wisp. I don't remember having to control a wisp that didn't have any intuitive design on how to use it (Bomb Wisp)
Ever wonder why there is only two classic Sonic battles and four modern Sonic battles? There was originally going to be another Sonic, a Dreamcast one. he was supposed to be like the king of the Dreamcast era. He was also going to be voiced by Ryan Drummond. Also, Jaleel White was going to voice Classic Sonic, but they never got around to contacting him, resulting in Classic being muted.
JLaniewski Wouldn't make sense to add Sonic from the Dreamcast Sonic. He looks no different from the current Sonic (and I DON'T mean the Boom redesigns).
Sonic Generations was a beautiful experience for me. Some of the most fun I've had in a Sonic game in years. Modern Sonic's stages are some of my favorite stages in Sonic history, and Classic Sonic is also a blast to play. This game truly reminded me of why I love Sonic, and for that, I'll forever love this game.
Not what I've heard, it's less of a sequel and more of a... gaiden? Though I guess we should reserve judgement until playing, but I still feel Advance is a better sequel to Sonic & Knuckles.
***** Not really, the second one had bullshit special stage requirements, and the secret ending and secret character was way past hard. The third one WOULD be better if the combinations were better thought out. Honestly it would have made more sense for this to be a new game to be fleshed out in sequels. Also death traps up the ass. That said, I don't think the first one is the clear best. It doesn't have Cream and the boost mechanics is a nice addition. Though it's the most "classic" of the games. The second two feel like the 2D equivalent of Sonic Adventure 2 and Heroes, a transition from classic to modern.
***** Their stages suck. I like every single stage in Advance 1, right down to the act. Stages I like in 2: ... Advance 1 also takes it in music. Off the top of my head: Angel Island Zone 1 and 2, Egg Rocket, Cosmic Angel, Ice Caps 1 and 2, etc. In Advance 2, I sort of like the first stage's theme. Molten Lava, no. Sky Canyon, no. Ice Paradise... You get the point. All of the stage themes in this game sound generic and lifeless, which really stands out in a franchise known for some of the most exceptional tracks in video games. Have not finished 3. It could actually be really good overall, for all I know, but the first stage didn't leave an impression, music or gameplay-wise.
+SJtheMFZB Sonic Advance 1 imo had a really bland soundtrack. None of them sound memorable and all just blend in together. Advance 2 had a really great soundtrack. Music Plant, Ice Paradise, and Leaf Forest all had good tracks. Advance 3? Idk....
well the thing is that when elise blew out the candle, it means that solaris never existed. so she would have had no reason (or means) to go back in time to blow out the candle, which is a paradox. only a few people have actually caught that, and it actually happens a lot in stories involving time travel. the only time i can find where it doesn't happen is Dr. Who. naturally.
Ehh, timey-wimey bullshit involving the time eater shattering the timeline. ...Wait a sec. Silver doesn't exist, because he was part of the aborted timeline. But, as Johnny noted, the ending cutscene shows him at the party. ...Did they just re-canon that little twit?
JLaniewski so you are saying you didnt get into sonic until generations even though the first game you played was Heroes which is one of the best sonic games ever made? Eh, I shouldnt be suprised. You have Sonic Boom as your profile pic which sums up your poor choice of games
cahan mclaughlin I did not say that. I like Sonic's design from Boom, and what I meant was that I liked Heroes, but it didn't get me into the series. It was Generations that did.
***** Same here! Sometime is 2006- ish My friend and his brother brought over Sonic Heroes and Shadow the Hedgehog for Ps2. I enjoyed Sonic Heroes and Shadow (Surprisingly) but I prefered Mario at the time. I then saw Sonic Generations and thought it might be fun, so I rented sometime around Christmas 2011 (I didn't even know it was new at the time) So I started to play it and I was HOOKED.
Wow I remeber this game December 25 2011 I got a PS3 It came with Marvel vs Capcom The Fate of 2 Words Then Sonic Generations I love the graphics I love this game I LOVE THIS REVIEW THANK YOU JOHN
6:16 The Dreamcast Era really means 6th Generation Era. The Dreamcast started the 6th generation era of gaming, so it means that Sonic Adventure, Sonic Adventure 2, Sonic Heroes, and even other titles like the Sonic Shuffle, Shadow, and Sonic Riders fall under this category.
Are you sure? Sonic Heroes has somewhat more advanced graphics than those DreamCast games. Same applies to Shadow The Hedgehog and Sonic Riders, really. Where did you get that info from?
I'm sure a lot of people already know this, including you, Johnny, but the reason why Sonic Generations never poked fun at the past levels after Chemical Plant is because the writers had never played a Sonic game before (or at the very least, played sonic 1 and 2 and no other sonic game) It is really annoying that Sonic Team implemented writers who can't even apply the story to the canon because they don't know what the canon is about, especially for Sonic Generations, an anniversary title.
Leem that's how I feel about the gameplay too especially Classic sections. Garbage physics aside the levels themselves are nothing like the levels in Sonic 1-3 People let nostalgia blind them when it comes to this game
@@duffman18 no the best stories was Unleashed, Black Knight and Secret Rings. They were well told stories with perfect characterization for Sonic. Those are what Sonic stories should be like.
+Marku912 A good game would have Boost gameplay, perfect music, Pixar quality graphics, the 4Kids voice cast, and a story that takes itself seriously while simultaneously being comedic at the same time. And much much MUCH more. So basically, Sega should say "hey remember Sonic Unleashed? Let's do that again!"
Brandon Smith Yeah, but why would we want the EXACT same story again? Its almost like all those people who want Generations 2. It's what made the game special, so if we did it again It wouldn't be special anymore, and it would be boring. PLUS the werehog stages weren't that great to begin with.
Lol I remember when this game came out. We were all so sure that sonic was finally good again, that only good times were in store for us. I still miss being a sonic fan around the time this game came out, was such a fun time.
Idk why but I feel they missed a big opportunity to include other characters to be playable in replay mode. Shadow with the boost and Silver flying at the speed of sound would have worked so well! Maybe it was a prototype for them to be playable in the future...
Maybe it's because it's about Sonic's story mainly. Besides that Tails and Knuckles or even Amy should be playable over the likes of Shadow and Silver. Shadow would just be a Sonic clone and be uninteresting. Silver would probably just be like a Supersonic clone because he can fly.
dearestjen 1st Shadow wouldn't be a clone of Sonic. Yes he has some similarities but also differences. 2nd Silver has Psychokenesis! (Dunno how to spell it) So he wouldn't be a Super Sonic clone.
Can't believe it has been 10 years since Sonic Generations came out. This year is the 30th anniversary of Sonic the Hedgehog. I remember when I saw the trailer for the game, I demand my parents to get the game for me for Christmas. Ever since then, I became a big Sonic fan and I had had collected games, comic books, and models of Sonic throughout the years.
Oh man. Sonic Generations was one of the first Sonic games that I've played since 2007. I was interested in Sonic at the time and decided that I should get some of the games. So I got Generations for the PS3 and Colors for the DS for Christmas last year. When I got home, I popped in Sonic Generations. And I thought it was _absolutely f**king incredible_. Thus began my current obsession with Sonic. Jesus f**king Christ I will never forget this game.
shaun03a I'm glad you became interested in the Sonic franchise despite the serious misteps that the franchise has had over the years. Generations was a great game and Lost World is pretty good too but it appeals to fans of the Adventure series so you might not like it. If you have a 3ds or wii u you should try it out. I'm sure Sonic Team are developing a game similar to Generations and Colours for the Xbox One and PS4, and it will be epic :)
cahan mclaughlin I'm expecting them to do something like that for the 25th anniversary, similar to how they made SA2 for the 10th anniversary. I'm just scared of the community flipping out when Sonic Boom: Fire and Ice comes out. I played the demo of the 3DS version of Lost World, and I like it a lot. The thing is that I saw Johnny's review on Lost World, and I don't really want to buy the 3DS version. Another issue is that I don't have a Wii U, which is a real shame because of things like Smash Bros 4 and Splatoon. Otherwise I would definitely pick it up.
shaun03a yeah they kinda need to do something for his 25th anniversary so hopefully it happens cuz I really want a gorgeous new sonic game running 1080p 60 fps and the community has already flipped out including myself becauss Boom is complete garbage tbh. And dont let one reviewers opinion stop you from getting a game, and yeah I was actually going to get a wii u but I waited until after e3 and I'm glad I did as it looks like they are dropping support for the wii u as the NX is coming soon
cahan mclaughlin Yes, it's about bloody time for a new main-series game since Sonic Lost World. Yes, I must agree, Sonic Boom belongs in a dumpster. Also, the NX? I didn't watch E3, so IDK what Nintendo's been doing recently.
shaun03a basically all you need to know is that there are lots of mulitplats on the way for pc, ps4 and xbox one. The xbox one is getting lots of great exclusives this year like halo, gear of war, forza, tomb raider and fable. Sony also showed off some pretty good games but they dont have much coming this year. 99% of Nintendos conference was 3DS games (which I dont mind because I own the new 3ds) and amiibos. They showed off like 2 wii u games, neither of which were anything great. So basically the Wii U's lifecycle is coming to an end and I'm glad tbh, I really hope the NX is a true next gen system
I think one actual completely original 10th zone leading up to the time eater boss fight would've gone a long way in giving generations its own identity. as it stands the entire identity of generations is based off of other games identity
While this IS my second favorite Sonic game, I'll admit that there is a lack of variety when it comes to stages. I get that they were trying to include the levels people enjoyed the most from each game, but the fact that there are four city levels (Speed Highway, City Escape Crisis City, Rooftop Run), two green hill type levels (Green Hill, Seaside Hill), and two industrial-themed levels (Chemical Plant, Planet Wisp) just makes me wonder if they were thinking about stage variety at all. Also, this was a HUGE missed opportunity to make Tails playable again. He even had a classic form, so it's not like it would have been that difficult to add him in as DLC at the very least.
I am not much of a Sonic fan anymore, but I picked this game up because my boyfriend owned it and I ate it up...I honestly want another Sonic game that is similar to this.
After replaying all the modern games, this is still the one I come back to. It’s that good! Ahh it’s gonna be fun replaying this during the holidays! Best Sonic game, right up there with S3&K, SA2 and Mania!
Yeah I’m inclined to agree. Colors was great but it barely had any 3D gameplay. Unleashed had great sonic levels but the werehog sucked. The Adventure Games had some really good levels but there was always something holding them back (big the cat, treasure tracking levels etc). I don’t think I need to explain the other game
Gamer Ninetyfive Yea I know its your opinion and I respect it but to compare Sonic Generations to Super Mario Galaxy 2 is just crazy to me. No offense.
Steve Spud I love the sense of speed you get when playing Generations, Galaxy 2, despite being fun the star collecting mindset can ware me out. It honestly depends on what type of games you like. I prefer a thrill ride over collecting things when it comes to video games.
I have to say after watching a few of these, I really enjoyed myself and your review style is something that I enjoy a lot! You've earned yourself a sub!
Haven't played a Sonic game since I got traumatized by the Shadow the hedgehog back when it came out. I think it's about dam time I played me a good sonic game and Generations seems pretty cool.
To be perfectlly honest the Crisis City is my favourite stage from the entire game. I love the remixed soundtracks in both stages and i wish Sonic 06 had the same quality, but well maybe SEGA will remake this black sheep of the series who knows .
Probably my faovirte Sonic game of all time. Sad it was too short, because gameplay wise was just perfect entirely. Only Sonic game I felt compelled to get an S rank on EVERY stage on EVERY mission, and got my Plat trophy on PSN! I'm really sad we haven't had a true successor to Generations using its refined-nearly perfected 3D gameplay. I don't like Lost World. I thought it was pretty damn bad, and Boom... doesn't look promising, but even if it's alright, it's clear that the gameplay is different.
sonic boom is shit dont play it its an absolute disgrace and even worse than sonic 06. also I actually thought I was the only one to S rank everything in generations XD, I'm on the 360 version and its fine, but after getting my 360, I wish I bought a PS3(true story, not joking around, FUCK the xbox 360)
Generations stages are so f*king goods, my only problem with this game is that his "adaptation" to pc really s**ked at all. C'mon, at the very first version the drift didn't work on the keyboard, and more, no matter how good is your pc, the game still have moments where the frame rate goes to the ground. Even so, it is really good game, I got all S ranks, all red rings, all challenges. Then I've downloaded the mod "Unleashed project" ( good if u want some hard challenges ) and, that was hard to get all the rank S -the time to get them were insane- but still the stages were good.
Ândreo Barros who do you think plays generations on pc with a keyboard? no one thats who, also if your pc is powerful enough the framerate will never drop
semaseri x Well the Unleashed Project Mod did fix the many problems with Sonic Unleashed such as QTEs, poor drifting, bad framerate, Sonic's speed jacked up to a ridiculous degree, stiff platforming, annoying camera, homing attack and air boost having the same button, pointless leg sweep attack and crawl move that interrupts sliding, landing after a stop is slippery, Sonic's obnoxious "Wooh" nose, werehog, medal hunting, hub worlds etc. The Unleashed project has no QTEs, good drifting, 60 FPS, Sonic's speed being more tame, fluid platform control, responsive camera, homing attack and air boost having different buttons, no stupid leg sweep and crawl to prevent the slide move, land stomps are no longer slippery, Sonic's voice is less loud, no werehog, mandatory medals are gone in favoure of optional red rings, simple hubwrold that doesn't force you to backtrack etc.
Also just beaten this game today for thef irst time, my biggest issue with the final boss is IT TOOK LIKE 4 TRIES AND 2 GAME OVERS before I figured out how to get rings! I could never see them until their passing me and nothing I could do, it wasn't until I boosted pass a row that I realized how they are pulled to you, however it onlyw orks AFTER you hit him as you can not tell when rings are coming until it's too late, if onlythere was a tell...
I know I'm really late to this, but I feel Johnny is missing the point of Sonic Generations. It's not about the meta or the story, it's about the gameplay of both 3D and 2D Sonic. While I do agree that story is a critical part of video games, I think gameplay plays a better role in this game.
@TheROBLOCrafter No. I stopped because I had a major nostalgia boner for this game and hated him disliking any aspect. I finished it later and now look back at this moment and laughed at what a douche I was being
