William Shakespeare told us about Romeo and Juliet falling in love despite their families being sworn enemies. That love affair ended with the couple lying dead on the floor. But the tragedy gave their families a new perspective and they ended their feud.
Today, in honor of Valentine’s Day, we’ll tell the story of another pair of star-crossed lovers. This couple was born on opposite sides of the famous feud between the Hatfields and the McCoys. Though they have been called the Mountain Romeo and Juliet, Johnse and Roseanna’s story differs from the older version in a few important ways. Be sure to watch to the end for a rarely told story about Roseanna's time in Pikeville.
Special thanks to local historian Reed Potter for his assistance in writing the script for this history moment.
