National Geographic Channel show unearths bullets and pieces of McCoy cabin from the New Year's Day massacre, the famous final battle between these famous hillbilly clans. CBS News' Mark Strassmann reports.
I'm related to the Hatfields and proud. I heard stories from my mom about how my great grandmother wouldn't let her watch Star Trek because of Bones McCoy.
@@yourinnerlawyer4035 why do you have to be so rude? If you didn't have anything nice to say why say it at all? It wasn't a joke, but my great grandmother wasn't a dunce or a mental case for this. She associated Mccoy with something that was against her family.
How the hell do they know those bullets were fired that day, Hell back than if you were able to take a successful shit you started firing your gun. Those bullets could have been fired any number of other times. If they made a statement like, these bullets MAY HAVE BEEN fired that day, I could deal with it, But to say it with such certainty and conviction. I find it irresponsible . oh well ,
I assume it's because they were bullets found at the burn site. And in areas where someone could've easily been hiding. Etc etc. No it's not concrete proof they were fired that day. But there's A LOT of circumstantial evidence pointing to it
I am related to Hatfield and McCoy.... McCoy on fathers side and Hatfield on Mothers side .what a lot of people don't know they are all related to each other. it was a family feud . Some people in those days changed their last name to Coy and Fields. this is what you all don't know. the feud lived many years after that in a lot of old peoples hearts. I remember to old women at a barn gathering one was a Hatfield and one was a McCoy they stared at each other and I heard my grandma say they use to be friends before the feud. but now they wont even speak to each other...so sad to have that much hate for your friend or family. It all started by 2 men trying to see who was the strongest and got all these people killed! They was all related to each other.!
debora smith yes I'm so glad someone else said this. I have done my genealogy and both also. So many people don't realize that or that some continue the fued
Wrong. Mingo county here. Yes some were related but most of the familys weren't. Also changing of last names was frowned upon. All this goes back to before the war. A failed courtship. Smh. Do you know how many people say they are related to one family or another but I go through their geology and find out they aren't. Ive study this since I was 8 years old. The history channel has actually borrowed pictures off my grandmother that had both family from before the war.

They were both at fault. And their children helped perpetrate the hate. The three sons of Randall McCoy stabbing the brother of Anderson Hatfield then shooting him led to their executions. The New Years massacre of the McCoy family in their cabin was equally inexcusable. Shakespeare pointed this out so well in his plays hundreds of years ago what the price of escalating hatred would bring on those who perpetrate it.
Everybody talks about the hatfields and McCoy's when there is a place in clay County Kentucky called Martin's creek where a battle took place, im not sure who these people were but my family said when they were children they heard gun fire night and day for a month from what I gather around a hundred people died , I wished I knew the real truth of that battle, but over on Martin's creek hundreds of people will tell tales of that story ....most of them said it was worse than the hatfields and McCoy battle.....
how pitiful, these people could have been friends. it always makes me sad, I see comments on here about "how proud' they are to be kin to the Hatfield or McCoy's. that my friends is the whole problem! pride is a sin, and it destroyed these peoples lives! and it can destroy yours,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
I wouldnt boast about being a relation to ridiculous people and their ridiculous murdering feud. Pure stupidity on all counts. But hey, the apple doesnt fall far from the tree 😉👍obviously.
Actually it is not known what actually started it! There is the story about the hog, which in those days, was food for the winter! So it may sound trivial but it was important to the family. Remember that being a horse thief was a hanging offense in the old west.
According to a book I'm reading there was only one church there, I think Baptist (?) and it's members were the woman and old fold. The men were mostly out swapping goods in the woods. The Hatfield & McCoy feud after Kevin Costner. Really good read and dispels most of what we generally believed.
I am a direct decendant of the McCoy clan. My mother is Eacie Belma McCoy and her father is William McCoy. I was born on the border of Kentucky and Ohio in West Union county. My mother said it started over a big red hen. She also said the Hatfields beheaded her grandpa and wouldnt let them pick him up for 3 days after..My mother was a Christian woman who loved the Lord so I'm sure the McCoys only did what they had to to defend their family and land. I am proud to be a part of the McCoys as they tries to so what was right..Thankyou..
dude its just a bullet ..i found bullets in old bunkers up on spencer mountain here in north carolina -_- people shot target practice back then doesnt mean hatfield or mccoy shot it
Archeologist sit on their behinds waiting for you to find something so they can come in and take it away from you on top of threatening prosecution. Worthless!!!
My first reenactment units first sergeant last name is Hatfield. He was a real nice feller. That unit was the 12th Texas Infantry which scrapped agin the bluebellies in Arkansas& Louisiana. This guy l met lived near Palestine, pronounced palasteen Texas.
Hatfields are clearly in the wrong in just about every incident. Like the headline shouldn't be "biggest family feud" it should be "terrible Hatfield family murders and steals, McCoy family does their best to cope"
It wasn’t that clear cut, both families had their good and bad traits. This is true with most families. There is generosity, jealousy, unconditional love, regret, pride, a sense of self respect, greed, common sense etc. Furthermore, Many were related to each other through marriage. There were so many things that caused all the disagreements, especially economic stability and predators.
