Campus Sports recently caught up with actor Jon Gries, who discussed his popular "Uncle Rico" character. Gries shared how he got the role and even got into character for a few questions.
Jon Gries should have won a best supporting actor Oscar for his role as Uncle Rico. One of the most slept-on, under-rated performances in the last quarter century. The forlorn and regret he conveyed with just his expressions and demeanour brought tremendous depth to that role in this cult comedy classic.
Fun fact. When this movie came out I had recently bought an orange 1962 dodge tradesman camper van. Looked identical to uncle Ricos van. I was called uncle Rico for the entire two years I drove it.
Grandma just called and said you're supposed to go home. ... Too bad, she said she doesn't want you here when she gets back because you've been ruining everybody's lives and eating all our steak. ... You can leave.
"Coach woulda put me in fourth quarter, we would've been state champions. No doubt. No doubt in my mind." but also "Uncle Rico: Ohhhh, man I wish I could go back in time. I'd take state." when he showed them the video... though I always remembered it as ID (Idaho) Tech State, but that's not a school so hah
Jon Gries did a wonderful job! He played one of the most memorable movie characters in history, in a film that is just as significant for being funny as it is for being kind. For all of his faults, you can't help but want to see things turn around for Uncle Rico.
REAL GENIUS!! LASLO!!! Just seent that movie for the first time at age 33. I knew id seen you before and then this popped of - ofc you ARE UNLCE RICO!!! Fun fact my sister is a nurse and briefly worked with John Heder's (Napoleon) dad who is a doctor.
@@mrdave777 ya, I don’t think the guy who made that comment is bright enough to comprehend that he’s in character and is a down to earth guy in real life.
people dont recall but BOOMERS and alot of Gen X didnt get Anchorman or Napoleon Dynamite when they came out. and i mean on video. people rented them and hated them and were portrayed by blockbuster people as "my kids like it but i thought it was RWORD" Millennials really drove those 2 and really this brand of comedy.
