@firstlast-yn4qg we see things differently. You see attempts at welcoming migrants, knowing there will be some work and challenges for our nation's pre-existing citizens as valuing other citizens over the country's own. I see things this way. We've never once valued other citizens over our own. We extend some things to other citizens who are facing hardship, and to whom a sub-par existence or opportunity in our nation is better than the nightmares they are coming from. And frankly, we often barely do that. Our own citizens are still very well off. The hardships we experience in welcoming new people to the nation are a fraction of the hardships they are experiencing, not only where they came from, but even still in being here. My question, what is a nation that doesn't value other countries citizens even a little?

I agree with the Republicans on the issue of migration. I’m not happy with their position on Ukraine, but they’re right about migration. and here is why. everyone should migrate to russia. Hey Jon next time you bring up "Border crossings number scary" can you relay that 60% of the people apprehended at the border (where the border crossing number comes from) have been apprehended at least one other time? Meaning at most the 300,000 number is 180,000 individuals. And that's not counting second and third time offenders. Meanwhile 850k visa overstays and not a peep. almost like there is something else going on, people aren't actually concerned with immigrants without visas.

Okay, John, very funny, but you're oversimplifying the immigration problem. Part of the problem is that with the gridlock in Washington, those seeking asylum are not allowed to work, and because of the lack of funding for judges processing them, they have to wait six years. So until we have comprehensive reform to the whole system, which the immigration bill HAD, it's a lose-lose situation... The bill would have given asylum seekers work permits... until they get those, it IS a problem housing and feeding 100K extra in one city alone.

Part of the Federal Reserve strategy to fight inflation is to put pressure on the market to lower wages. Both sides want to let them in because working class and middle class W-2 slaves gained a lot of leverage in the job market since covid. We can hop from job to job much easier and they hate it. They could easily enforce workers overstaying their visa or start fining companies every time a worker they brought in is deported, but they won't. It's all political theater to keep the poor left and poor right hating each other with a side dish of class warfare to keep us desperate for minimum wage.

Is it really such a problem though? These people need resourses and help only until you let them get/create jobs. If you streamline the process of asylum application (so that it takes days/weeks instead of years) then they will either get deported or get a job quickly, and then the issue resolves itself

I've been concerned how little I've been laughing at live comedy shows in Bushwick/ the village, SNL, standup online etc lately and then in tears laughing at all of these jokes. I'm alive! I have a soul!

If you look at the immigrants who came into NYC in the 19th and early 20th centuries, the city wasn't really prepared at that time either. However, new ideas, inventions, and methods of dealing with the problems of those who helped build the country sprang up. This is what makes the country great. Our ingenuity, compassion, and love of freedom extended to those who desire it. That's why the majority of immigrants want to come here. It would be a shame to lose all that to a minority of shouting, entitled, dumbed down, dictator want to be loyalists. Not patriots...loyalists.

As he's long been an east coast guy who always has stood up for NY/NJ, frustrating to watch Stewart just ignore all the awful measures put in place by Mayor Adams. The clips showed here barely scratch the surface, and weren't even used to directly critique his policies. 😬

Not only NYC, the Border Bill basically did nothing, yet Stewart propped it up like it meant something. Actually look into the things that were in that bill in the original un-edited version that was tied to funding with Ukraine and you would be angered.

I came as an immigrant to the US from my native Dom. Rep. in the mid 90's, barely being able to understand any English, watched tv in English to get used to it... one of the first tv shows I started watching was this one, hosted by a fellow named Craig K... later on replaced by the one and only JS.. a college degree, wife, 30 lbs and 2 kids later, it still my fav way of watching the news, thru the satirical lenses of the gr8 John Steward .. .keep it going John... 17 more years !!

He quoted it because the statue is in New York City and Ellis Island that the statue is on is an immigration office that has processsd over 12 million people. So it’s not on any federal or constitutional document, but it’s very much a part of New York City culture itself.

People crossing national borders, is fundamentally no different, than the many millions crossing state and town borders every day. If we spent as much effort hounding ordinary harmless citizens, as we do with ordinary harmless migrants, we would not have time to deal with domestic crime either. The "problem" is self-caused.
