Probably thousands of tenors can sing the notes with perfect pitch. BUT -- only a handul can imbue this song with the pathos and sadness that the lyrics demand. Johnathan is at the top of that very short list.
I like his rendition as well... I liked Josh groban's version as well, but not as emotional like it should be, I feel Jonathan nailed the emotion part..
This song is either a massive favorite or a huge flop based on the emotion put behind it. Jonathan shows the pain behind this song and it's absolutely stunning. Personally, I don't know how anyone can perform this song as well as Jonathan did and not cry during the performance.
@@bubbybets9336 I know a lot of people didn't and it's not one of the best soundtrack versions of the song, but in the context of the movie on screen, it hits me harder than most versions. I don't think it's fair to judge that one without the video to accompany it. The pain and emotion are so raw and real from him it's hard not to love it.
This hit me hard. I sit at a kitchen table and bench that my maternal great grandfather made. It is 100 years old and my emotions run high how many people sat at this table? All gone I sit a lone.😮😢
It's easy to see that Jonathan understands pain on a deep level. Anyone who has was put through some shit as a kid would recognize that from his appearance on AGT. The passion that understanding puts into his music is....indescribable. I could listen and watch this man sing all day on repeat and never be bored. Glad to see you are shining bright Jonathan. From one bullied kid to another, it fills my heart with such joy :)
Ace, As we go through life’s journey, there will be times when life isn’t fair, or we are suffering from some kind of pain! Your response to Jonathan is a noble gesture on your part, and May you find peace, and know that there are people who care about you and everyone else who has been a victim. Blessings to you for a wonderful future, because you are the captain of your ship, and I wish you well.
@@erlingsalvesen6470 This gave me a big smile. I am older now and surrounded by support and love. I dwell a bit much on the past but on the whole I've no complaints about my life. Thank you for taking the time to say this though, it was very kind.
I am a recent Jonathan Antoine Addict. One thing I’m noticing with him is that he doesn’t just sing a song, he fully lives it. Here he is completely and perfectly living a soldier with survivor guilt…as an old soldier it is heart wrenching to watch. What an amazing performance!!
So, so true. Every time I listen to this song, it brings me to tears. Jonathan is an excellent story teller... How much this young man has grown since 2012 !
Am in tears.. this song is truth. That is why it is so touching..I only wish it was just a song. What a touching performance. Thank you. God bless us all.
@@judithmcfarlane3228 After having 2 successful albums and a tour together, they went into Sony for their third album, and were each offered a solo contract. Charlottes album was released first. After, she decided to return to Music Theatre Arts school, to study Musical theatre which was always her dream. She now has a successful career in Musical theatre and has performed in Londons West End!
I absolutely love this man! I watched him on BGT in 2012 as a shy 17 yr old and watched him grow in to a wonderful man and a highly gifted singer warms my heart! I'm not an opera fan unless I'm listening to Mr. Jonathan Antoine! Such passion!
@sandranelson3327 I like his opera singing! He reminds me so much of my son! If I can sneak a recent picture of my son, I'll show you! He hates to have his picture taken...lol
That is definitely world class cello playing, by far.. what a touch she has and her dynamics are just emotionally moving. Nothing needs to be said about Jonathon’s voice that hasn’t already been said from the second he auditioned for a Britain’s Got Talent. The man has a world class voice like none heard in a long time. He was just born to do this and we are just lucky to share in it.
@@wendycarter5718 Really? Jonathan makes me melt every time he sings. His voice touches my heart and soul. Cello player is feeling the music amazingly and it is not acting, IMHO.
Just stunning. The emotion of your voice and melancholy of the cello just compliment each other so well. Such a powerful rendition. Thank you Jonathan.
Listen to "Compass" and"Country Roads" both filmed from the same sold out Toronto concerts and Both Very Appropriate for these difficult times. They are here on RU-vid, and wait till you hear Jonathans version of Nessun Dorma!
I got to admit, Jonathan has an amazing voice! And this is definitely one of the best I've seen! But I personally loved Eddie Redmayne's the most, only because he not only did an amazing job singing, but also vocalizing the pain of the situation, and to me thats very important for this song. I love Jonathan Antoine though XD
Jonathan, thank you for sharing your amazing talent with all of us. I am currently in Afghanistan and you have no idea how helpful your songs are to me. Thank you again, I hope this comment finds you well!
to be fair Les Misérables is a master class on how to create musical theater, Drink with me returns as Empty chairs. In that Marius isn't a lead its seldom done justice.
My God to think this young man suffered from depression .To see him now and his transformation to a super start and an astounding performance with the most deeply intoxicating voice .. absolutely stunning .. I was deeply moved by the song of empty chairs at empty tables .. .❤️
As an Iranian when I was watching this performance months ago I could never imagine that what will happen to my country months later..I feel this song within my bones..my heart and thoughts are with all the young brave lives that we lost through this ongoing revolution
I mean mate you might have had some idea. The nation of Iran very publicly went through a major social and cultural revolution in 1979 and has been splitting at the seams for at least the last 20 years +.
I was so surprised to see your comment here just now. This is because a few days after the revolution started, I sang this song for my friends in Iran. I'm an Iranian living in exile. You can see my cover on my channel.
This performance is going to make me go out and buy the CD of Les Miserables. I have heard so many of the different songs and it is such an incredible body of works.
This is good, and I thank God there's Johnathan in this world. But Eddie Redmayne's version.... Broke my heart to pieces as I painfully and muffled cry so I can still take each note and emotions in.
How could one not cry when this song is sung? This song is raw emotion and the lyrics are heartbreaking. I cry every time. Jonathan's voice is breathtakingly spectacular.
Boy how I cried over this. Superb performance and the "phantom faces at the window..." part really gave it an entire new meaning to the empty chairs, Magnificent!
Tina Guo is, for my money, the finest cellist I've ever heard. This was an awesome collaboration of two artists who really understand how to express emotion through performance. Excellent!
@@alexgeiger5305 you would dispute that Guo is the finest Cellist I've ever heard? How do you know which cellists I've heard? Why would you dispute a stated opinion?
@@alexgeiger5305 Her expression is absolutely top class, I'm absolutely curious and very interested in hearing whom you think is on another level. Even if I ultimately disagree I'm sure they'd be worth hearing!
This is by far the best performance of this song that I have ever heard. The combination of Jonathan's astounding vocals and the superb playing od Tina Guo is just magical. This performance sets the bar so high that I doubt it will ever be surpassed.
INSANELY GOOD!!!!!!!!!!! I dove down the Jonathan Antoine 'rabbit hole' tonight, and it's definitely a Wonderland of musical delight! Les Mis is my favorite musical, and as I listened with tears rolling down my face, I glanced down and saw this performance happened on my birthday!
The most emotional rendition of this classic.. You nailed it Jonathan and Tina!! Now, with so many dying from the Corona virus this lovely song has more meaning than ever before as there are many "empty tables."
No one is dying from the corona virus, they are dying from other illnesses that have compromised their immune system. In some the virus took advantage of that just like the flu does and they died. They sent a memo/directive telling the hospitals to list covid 19 as #1 cause of death even if they didnt test for it and what really caused them to die as #2.
@@rammer561 tell that to the over 100000 people that have died in the UK. im all for a conspiracy theory but not with something as serious as Corona Virus
Great song, beautifully performed. I just listened to the various other performers that commenters said sing it better and I have to disagree. They're all good but nobody tops this guy Jonathan.
Les Miserable has some of the most emotional songs I've ever experienced... I love your voice Mr. Johnathan! You can sing Les Mis like no other... Just so beautiful!!!😍
The BEST version of this song I've seen on RU-vid. From the controlled and outstanding performance from Jonathan, to Tina's stunning playing, this beats the rest hands down. Bravo
Yes this is the very BEST rendition of this song from Les Miserables I have heard, I cannot wait to listen to it again and again. Thank you Jonathan you are amazing.
@@suzanba7 stage and film are two very different things. I agree that Eddie Redmayne's version is amazing though. My statement was more aimed towards stage performances..
Phenomenal! I remember him from Got Talent days and he is even more sensational than I thought he would be. The cellist is unbelievably talented with tear dropping sounds emanating from her instrument.
Absolutely, Jonathan is one of the only voices I've heard who is as good or maybe better for this song. His rendition of "Bring Him Home" gives Gary Morris' a run for it's money as well.
Jo Wolf there’s no way he’s better than Michael ball, Michael Ball is incredible. Here’s a video of Michael Ball, in case you needed a reminder: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-POvsvbc1yC8.html. The emotion on flame is incredible, this one is too slow and high imo
A Stop Motion Channel It’s not better than Ball’s version by any means. Hell, I fully recognize that he is one of (if not the) best Marius. But this version is a lot better than many of the ones that non broadway singers have put out.
@Stop Motion Channel. It depends on how you look at it. Johnathan's version is a classical take on the song, Michael Ball's is an actors take, both brilliant, both filled with emotion and feeling.
Even though this song is about grief and pain and is well portrayed by Jonathan, in the vibration of his voice I feel pure Love underneath the grief and this is amazingly beautiful. What a gift!
This is one of my absolutley favorite all time performances...such a haunting and sad song and both Jonathan and the Cello solo was so heartbreaking you could feel the pain as they sang it
I believe that Jonathan would not be singing with this amount of depth and intensity of emotion had it not been for his experiences with life’s challenges and difficulties. No bitterness at all. Just humble sensitivity.
This song makes me think of all the friends I’ve lost to opiates. Rest In Peace Marc, Joe, Andre, Adam, John, Jon, Jonny and Alex. I fucking miss you guys more than you could know
@Allan the Great actually, without my glasses, yes. And close to legally blind with them. Why, do you have a problem with the visually impared? Or, are you just an asshole?
That was beautiful....something I needed today. Sit on the porch with a cup a coffee, and just listen to this with the birds chirping in background..nothing else. Bravo Jonathan
Have you heard Compass, it was filmed at this same sold out concert in Toronto. Also, "Jonathan the Porcupine" a childrens book about bullying, co-written and narrated by Jonathan both here on RU-vid. Printed version of book available thru Amazon and Jonathans website. Compass is a wonderful song for these difficult times.
Newest Music Video, Jonathan singing "Io Si/Seen" per Grammy award winning composer Diane Warren's request! He sings the harmonies too. BEAUTIFUL!!! It debuted at #1 on itunes Classical Chart.
My heart aches as I listen to this version of the song, the brokenness they projected was overflowing and I couldn't help it. It was such a breath-taking performance.
His talent is overwhelming. He’s the first person I’ve seen get up on a stage and bring enough righteous skill to stand on a thousand stages. I love how he has grown since Agt. I can’t wait to see more of him.
So many who watch RU-vid seemed to have discovered Jonathan Antoine at the same time.. I felt an instant kinship with this man the first time I saw him on BGT with Simon Cowell. To watch Mr. Antoine "beebop" across the stage with Charlotte in his canvas shoes and Jimi Hendrix sweat shirt and then unassumingly unleash that voice.......so beautiful ....... so perfect....I was in tears in an instant, knowing this wonderful voice had finally found his home....... . He would never be alone anymore.
Jonathan performs this song like no one else can, with both power and great delicacy, so much expression. Perfect. He obviously loves this piece as much as it loves his wonderful voice.
You clearly have never heard Michael Ball...10th Anniversary of Les Mis'...try it them re-think this statement of yours. Jonathan is fun to watch and rout for but he his dreadfully out of key and doesn't have the range or projection to carry this song meaningfully.
voice. So very talented and from an extremely young. I've kept up every way and he even gets better and better. If you can believe that. I just love listening to his voice.
Bravismo, Jonathon. I don't like being jealous, but it is impossible not to be when it comes to your voice. I so wish I could sing so well. Oh, and your hair... I love your hair and wish I had been blessed with such beautiful locks.
This is absolutely stunning. I remember seeing his Britain’s Got Talent audition and being blown away that he was so talented at just 17. It makes me so happy to see how much his confidence has grown and how strong his voice is
There's a grief that can't be spoken, There's a pain goes on and on. Empty chairs at empty tables, Now my friends are dead and gone. Here they talked of revolution, Here it was they lit the flame, Here they sang about tomorrow and tomorrow never came. From the table in the corner, They could see a world reborn, And they rose with voices ringing, And I can hear them now The very words that they have sung Became their last communion On this lonely barricade, at dawn. Oh my friends, my friends forgive me That I live and you are gone There's a grief that can't be spoken, And there's a pain goes on and on Phantom faces at the window, Phantom shadows on the floor, Empty chairs at empty tables where my friends will meet no more. Oh my friends, my friends don't ask me What your sacrifice was for Empty chairs at empty tables Where my friend will sing no more.
I've never even listened to this kind of music. but this voice seems straight from the heavens. thank you Jonathan you opened a whole new world for me. You are absolute perfection. Wow!

@@jjaus We flew to Toronto for Jonathans sold out concerts, people came from as far away as UK. Europe and even Australia to attend. He sounds even better live. His encore was Nessun Dorma! It's on his latest CD Going the Distance.
@@jjaus Oh my you need to wake up and smell the coffee ,this man has a register way beyond his years .Watch his audition with Rolando Villazon who just might know what he is talking about ! I have listened to opera for 60 years and he gives me goose bumps every time .
OMG Empty Chairs and Empty Tables simply chilling WOW WOW WOW Jonathan you truly are MAGNIFICENT CHE VOCE STRAORDINARIA SEI BELLISSIMO Ciao Bello 💋💚❤💋💚❤
I understand that he was teased a lot as a child; making him miserable. But that misery produced the passion reflected in his singing. It was actually a gift. He understands the human condition. Nobody goes through life unscathed.
This has always been one of my least favorite songs of Les Miserables. However, after hearing it sung by Jonathan I have a greater appreciation for the meaning behind the song. Excellent!
Watching this at the close of 2020.... and remembering now that there are many more empty chairs at empty tables around the world.... hard for me not to cry.
Thousands of people die every day and millions every year. Some happily and some not so much, but if you constantly think about death and its negative effect then you are bound to be constantly sad. See it as something natural we all are going to share eventually.
@@ilikefishandpotatoes I understand what you are saying in you reply. I just think that it's the sheer number of people who have died over the last year, many needlessly.
It's okay to be sad and show empathy for the 2 million people who died in 2020 around the world. That is being a human being, don't listen to anyone trying to miminize your humanity.
I miss my concerts so much. Being able to go out and mix with people without fear, enjoy the atmosphere, a drink at the bar and of course world class music. The psychopaths who have destroyed this have no souls.
